Trumps Drive By

Did this really happen or have I fallen down the rabbit hole?

It is striking how so many of the usual Gransnet Trump supporters are not posting today. Could it be because they realise that Trump has gone too far this time? Even one of the doctors at the centre where he is has described his drive-by as "insanity".

jaylucy is in good company when she has asked "Who in their right mind, when suffering from an infectious illness such as Covid would be leaving their house anyway ?"

The answer IMHO is simple - a narcissistic and desperate person.

Narcissistic because Trump can't cope without the attention of others. It must be hard for him knowing he can't get out there to campaign and knowing that Joe Biden can get out there and may get more attention than him.

Desperate because he worries that maybe, just maybe, he won't win the election.

roachwoman - there's free speech here, as you have acknowledged, so feel free to criticise our leader if you wish.

The posts criticising Trump are not criticising him purely because they think differently to him but also because of the effects of the things he has said and done. Examples would be his attitude to women and their right to have an abortion, his stated support for white supremacist groups which he then feebly tried to row back from, his support for the gun lobby and his denial of climate change to name a few.

Their views - which are shared by many - are based on what has been reported about what is happening to your country and they are entitled to worry about the effects of another four years of Trump not only on the US but on climate change and the balance of power in the rest of the world.

roachwoman I agree that you do think differently but also that you name things differently. What does the term ‘liberal left’ mean to an American?

I’m not a particularly left wing person, in fact some on here might probably call me right wing. I’m actually a bit right of center, but I don’t like Trump. I’m sorry you find our remarks offensive, but surely you must realise that absolutely no normal person suffering from Covid19 would behave in such a manner. Our own PM, who is certainly not liked universally, kept complete isolation until he was taken into hospital, and from there he recuperated for several weeks. Surely that is how Trump should behave?

Wow. Such vitriol! I’m an American and I would never say such things about the leader of your country. You are free to say what you like, to be sure, but this is how you treat those who think differently? I guess I’ll just chalk it up to the typical liberal left.

This is how I treat lying evil wicked people

Thank you. I consider it a compliment to be classed as liberal.

Well worth a listen

Whitewavemark2 Mon 05-Oct-20 14:41:56

I think that we are in danger of losing touch with reality here.

Ask yourself, would you have ever thought it normal for a covid patient who is hospitalised to leave the hospital go for a photo-op then return to his hospital bed?

Nothing is normal about this man, and I think the future will show just how abnormal he in fact is.

^There is a rumour that it was not him but one of his 'lookalike' stand-ins, which, from what I^ understand, he has many.

Dear God! There's more than one that looks like that? shock

I wondered if it was a stand-in. After all, there are only his eyes showing through darkened windows. Anyone can cover half their face with a mask and put on a blonde wig.

Chewbacca Mon 05-Oct-20 14:35:12

Are you a Trump supporter by any chance roachwoman?

I don't think the world could sustain another 4 years of him Suziewoozie. I can't bear to think of what further harm he could do in that time. Surely sense will prevail at the next election?

Ellianne, I take your point about the passenger area of his car being sealed off from the driver but I based my observation on this quote:

Dr James Phillips, chief of disaster medicine at George Washington University and an attending physician at Walter Reed Medical Center, described the drive-by as "insanity".
He wrote on Twitter: "That presidential SUV is not only bulletproof, but hermetically sealed against chemical attack. The risk of COVID-19 transmission inside is as high as it gets outside of medical procedures. The irresponsibility is astounding. My thoughts are with the Secret Service forced to play.
"Every single person in the vehicle during that completely unnecessary presidential 'drive-by' just now has to be quarantined for 14 days. They might get sick. They may die. For political theater. Commanded by Trump to put their lives at risk for theater. This is insanity."

I have no reason to disbelieve this doctor.

suziewoozie Mon 05-Oct-20 14:28:57

But what about the security men? It’s easy to know who not to believe isn’t it?

Ellianne Mon 05-Oct-20 14:26:21

I don't know who to believe any more, but even the drivers of London taxis are totally screened off, as are drivers of school minibuses and other vehicles.

^uncaring towards the driver of the limo who had to breathe the same contaminated air as him.^
I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to police and military stuff. The car would actually have separate compartments, with their own oxygen. It is all for security.
I will see if I can find the specification.

Well excuse me but I’ll believe the exceptionally brave doctor who has spoken out about the insanity of doing this.

suziewoozie Mon 05-Oct-20 14:17:47

Chew the problem is he hasn’t finished yet has he ? Four more years is possible - and wait for the election result and what happens then. Open civil war on the street is not a fanciful scenario. Generally speaking, evil leaders ramp up as time goes by. There are many ways to cause the death of your people - famine is one and dealing with a pandemic as he has including deliberately spreading the virus is another. Evil leaders don’t just order mass executions or drop bombs.

Ellianne Mon 05-Oct-20 14:17:42

Trump is certainly one of the most stupid people I’ve ever heard about. He’s not fit to be President in my opinion. I could hardly believe my eyes last night when the news programme showed him in the car.
At least Melania’s doing it properly. I wish her a quick recovery.

Chewbacca Mon 05-Oct-20 13:48:37

When I compare Trump to others who have gone down in history as evil, I'm not sure if he is or not. But he's definitely a deranged, dangerous, deluded megalomaniac and a proven pathological liar. When I saw the photos of his drive by, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Arrogant towards the medics who advised him not to, and uncaring towards the driver of the limo who had to breathe the same contaminated air as him.

Struggling2do1 Mon 05-Oct-20 13:38:43

It’s a miracle, don’t forget he is ‘the chosen one’ ?.

suziewoozie Mon 05-Oct-20 13:38:38

I can not recommend highly enough Simon Marks Washington correspondent for his take on all things Trumpian. On national radio he is explicit that the WH and the doctors are lying and have lied.

Flakesdayout Mon 05-Oct-20 13:35:16

IF Donald Trump has Covid he will use this to his advantage. He will try and get the sympathy vote and he will consider himself strong as he has overcome it and only a strong man can be President. I dread to think how many people he has infected with his arrogant attitude and the blatant stupidity the man displays is beyond belief.
