Police could not trace 1,009 people who broke international quarantine rules

Anyone returning to Australia has to quarantine in a hotel under guard for two weeks - at their own expense.

I thought they would be allowed back, EllanVannin so perhaps they are not citizens?

We could go but we're not risking the flight.

There are about 36,000 people overseas who live in Oz but they haven't even been allowed to travel back. Perhaps this was the right way of doing things ?

I have a friend who recently spent 6 weeks in Korea. On arrival, no ifs or buts, she was taken, with all the other new arrivals to a hotel requisitioned for the purpose and had to stay there, IN HER ROOM, for 2 weeks! The doors had been fitted with centrally administered alarms, so they could tell if anyone left. They were provided with food and other necessities, by the government. If their test was clear at the end of the fortnight, they were free to leave, complete with RELIABLE track and trace app on their phone. That's what a good quarantine policy looks like! On her arrival back in Manchester (having changed planes in Amsterdam) she reported no checks whatsoever in place (and people change in Amsterdam from all over the world!). What a shambles, eh?

An article in the Telegraph a couple of weeks ago was written by contributor who wanted to remain anonymous.
She had returned from abroad and the family were supposed to quarantine for two weeks, by about day 10, no symptoms and fed up so she visited the corner shop, then farther afield.
When in Waitrose, she received a call asking if she was at home, to which she replied saying yes. Then asked why she wasn’t answering her doorbell!
Result, £1000 fine, apparently if she had admitted it straightaway would have got off with a warning, but because she lied....
She was mortified, no doubt as a result of being caught out.

It's just another example of the half-assed, we'll think something up, but never do anything about it, approach that typifies the government's headless chicken thinking.

Same for me in March, although I understand the system wasn't up and running then.

I think it is one thing if you haven't been contacted. BUT if they came to your door and you were out, that is a clear rule infraction. Instant fine.
