Regarding the original question, Blue5, at this stage I'm totally sick to the back teeth by all the blatant law breakers, deniers and rule ignorers around here.

It's no wonder that the virus is out of control.

I never quite realised that I was surrounded by so very many selfish idiots - until now!

Growstuff Whilst I don’t necessarily agree with everyone else’s opinions — that is what debate is all about — but, it was I who ‘claimed to have worked in the NHS for 40 years’. Do we now have to provide documentation to prove our claims? Yes, I do have some insider knowledge, having been involved in bed management for some time. I know the difference between a ‘normal’ winter overload in hospitals and the one brought about by this virus.

BTW According to the ONS, Covid was Number 3 on the list of causes of death in June.

They're unnecessary, avoidable deaths. Covid would be much higher if there hadn't been mitigating measures.

I've just been reading about the rise in hospital acquired Covid infections. Staff are complaining that they're required to return to work after infection and/or self-isolation without being tested. Presumably, hospitals are short-staffed. In those circumstances, it's not surprising that elective surgery is being postponed.

The hospital where I had my diabetic eye test is a day hospital, so doesn't have Covid patients.

The only solution is to get community transmission down, which is why I'm not fed up of following rules and, like you MayBee, go even further.

My personal opinion is that the government doesn't have a coherent plan and has wasted billions on the aborted Test and Trace scheme, bogus PPE contracts and the current asymptomatic testing, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to stick two fingers up (metaphorically) at the "rules".

If I had any worrying symptoms of an kind I’d follow it up. However I worry myself sick over routine tests and, as I’m managing to keep a lid on any COVID worries I daren’t add to them. The only places I’ve been to in 10 months are Boots for a pneumonia and then a flu vaccine and a dental appointment for some fillings.

I'm sorry to hear that. Is there going to be an investigation?

I guess this is why hospitals are trying to avoid procedures unless they're absolutely necessary.

A good friend died of bowel cancer a few years ago. I'd worry more about having bowel cancer than catching something from a hospital.

MayBee70 I've left my home just a handful of times since March. One of my "outings" was to the local hospital for a diabetic eye screening. I felt very safe in the hospital. I'm sure it would be the same for a breast screening or endoscopy.

Everybody in the hospital wore a mask. There were very clearly marked pathways and seating was well-spaced. The person who did the test had a huge container of cleansing fluid and wipes and told me she wiped down the equipment after every appointment.

I made up my mind months ago that I didn't want to take any risks because I really don't want to be infected, so I'm fussy. The only other places I've been have been my GP, dentist, pharmacy and one trip to an outdoor garden centre with a cashless payment. I won't even risk shops, restaurants or the hairdresser, so haven't been. I can honestly say the hospital was as safe as it could be.

Oh I can do that: no problem. But if they pick up on something I wouldn’t want to go to a hospital to have an endoscopy and then I’d worry.

Surely to say it has been badly mishandled means - I know how it could have been handled ?

Isn't the bowel cancer screening test the one which needs you to poke around in your poo to put a bit on a stick? You can do that at home?

Sophiasnana: I can understand why you’re so frustrated about your husbands operation.imo it will be down to not having a guaranteed intensive care bed. I’d also be very concerned about the number of people going into hospital for routine procedures and catching the virus. For that reason I haven’t bothered with routine mammograms/bowel cancer screening tests as I wouldn’t want to go to a hospital if they needed to be followed up. If it means I miss out on treatment for breast
or bowel cancer it’s my own fault. A friend of mine has had a heart procedure cancelled this week. I don’t know why.

Incidentally, outpatient appointments at my local hospital have been carried out online wherever possible.

Presumably your friend's daughter does know why her department is only seeing a few outpatients every day. Your DH was obviously prioritised, if he had an appointment.

I expect you realise that staff from cardiac care units have been reassigned to Covid care. What else could they do?

MayBee70, do you honestly think the NHS actually explain why his operation is cancelled? Of course not. I only know that when he attended for his angiogram our local hospital is practically empty. My friends daughter actually works in the dept and tells her they are doing very little, and only seeing a few outpatients every day.
By the way I worked for the NHS for over 40 years. I just think the whole covid thing has been badly mishandled.
