Has anyone heard of the possibility that there may not be enough vaccine for getting 2nd doses within 12 weeks

But that's not what the article says:

Maizie I cannot see a problem the AZ vaccine is kept for those who had AZ first time around and every body else, first and second jabs get one of the others. I have seen a report that said higher protection was achieved with using different vaccines for the first and second shots.

Where did you see that AZ is keeping jabs to one side for second doses? I'm afraid I've heard the exact opposite.

Nevertheless, I believe they are confident that there will be enough doses for second doses, but possibly not enough to vaccinate those in lower risk groups as quickly as was hoped.

AZ has manufacturing plants in India, Belgium and the Netherlands. The UK manufacturing bases are not producing all of the UK's orders.

Dh had his first at the end of Jan, and today had a text inviting him to book the 2nd, which will be next week. (Outer SW London)

My first was exactly a week after his, so I’m expecting a call or text soon.

Please stop scaremongering those who are, there isn’t a problem with the second vaccine. We make Astra Zeneca in the UK, and the Pfizer vaccine is secured for the second dose. I’ve just been able to make an appointment for my second Pfizer jab. It will be 10 weeks since the first. I was beginning to get a bit anxious after all the media speculation so a relief. Will find something else to worry about now.

Why the criticisms of Maizie? Honestly? This Government lies to us every single day about almost everything. It’s not illogical or irrational to wonder if they are lying about this? Quite the opposite. I don’t actually think they are for once but that’s a different matter.

Why? because she describes peoples views as pointless. She's entitles to her point of view and I'm entitled to differ.

Maybe she tells people in RL that their views are pointless. All our opinions are shaped by our different experiences and not pointless.

Meanwhile I believe a trial is going on to see if giving a different second vaccine works as well or better than making sure everyone receives the same one as their first.

It’s thought possible that two different vaccines could in fact give better protection.

The Moderna one is due here at the end of April.

I was told by a doctor that there is a delay.

Also, I read that this us why in spite of the slow roll-out in Europe they still have "doses in fridges". Many countries in Europe are choosing to put the second dose "to one side" for every single person inoculated.

They don't want to be in a situation where the second dose isn't available and their most vulnerable don't get a second dose.

We are told there is one month delay in supplies but there will be plenty of the vaccine for second doses. According to I paper GP’s are told not to give second doses before 11 weeks have elapsed and are being asked to return surplus vaccine to be redistributed. The NHS is adamant we will get our second vaccination MaisieD so fingers crossed. Ours is due by 12th May so I won’t worry too much just yet.

On the other hand, 30 million first doses have now been given, 57% of the adult population.

I think too many people forget is that in all the fuss about the availability of the Astra Zeneca vaccine, that it is not the only vaccine on the block. Production and supply of the Pfizer vaccine continues and there are several other vaccines that will be available for use in the next two or three weeks.

In some places they are progressing down through the age groups now.

The main hospital in our nearest city held sessions this weekend. My 29 year old went along and got his first jab. Everyone queuing was a young adult apparently. They have the vaccines and if some in the older age groups are not taking them up plenty of young people will.

I don't think 2nd doses will be a problem. NHS workers in my family have all had both now. So have people I know who are over 80. DH is mid 70s and has been told he will get his 2nd dose in the next two weeks. I have a date booked in early May for my second.

Don't worry. Before it becomes clear to everyone that there won't be enough vaccine for second doses all round, there will be some miraculous new findings that we don't, after all, need two doses because one gives such a high degree of immunity.

I have seen much on TV & media about vaccine shortages but as Justme mentions, there are new vaccines on the horizon.
This time we've a few months wriggle room. (One suggestion was shortages come August/September).
The shorter gap between Pfizer vs Astra Zenica is as it should be. Casting my mind back to Christmas, the Pfizer vaccine was originally to be given 6 weeks apart.

It is encouraging to know 40s she group are being called up.
The government wants to keep the economy going so will want the vaccine programme to succeed.
Fingers crossed I'm not eating my words.

There certainly seems to be plenty of people in their 40s receiving their first dose.

Mr C will have his second Pfizer jab on Tuesday, 10 weeks after the first. When the surgery phoned to arrange it I was told if I also had Pfizer I could have the second jab at the same time no matter the date of the first. Mine was AZ two weeks after Mr C’s, surgery caller assured me my second would be in a week or two. Our well organised surgery hub has been vaccinating people in their 40’s, there seems to be regional variation, we’re in the South West, but it seems likely people everywhere will get their second vaccination when or before it’s due.
