Why are arrivals from India not being sent to quarantine hotels?

I saw in the news this morning that New Zealand have temporarily suspended flights from India due to the rapidly escalating Covid rate. (Prior to this all arrivals from India and from anywhere else had to go to a quarantine hotel for 2 weeks).
Here in the UK, not only are flights still coming in from India, but passengers don't even have to go into the quarantine hotels and are allowed to go home to self-isolate.

I thought it was shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted confused

why shouldn't people return home to their family anyway? I British people work in India, my husband used to for example and I'd have wanted him to come down before any lockdown/restriction type scenario

It's very irresponsible to say that the "Indian" variant will be a corker. Its not even a variant of concern yet. It may become one, but it's not yet.

And saying the 3rd Lockdown is on its way is pure scaremongering and you have no basis for saying that.

By the way, I think you are getting your horse metaphors confused. Bolting the stable doors is what I think you mean.

The Indian variant will be a corker, wait and see. Another cart before the horse move shock 3rd lockdown on its way.

Can't understand why we have to wait until Friday to implement Red status and quarantine for those returning from India. Why not immediate implementation? After all, we are talking lives here. I believe there are many extra flights being put on to accommodate incomers.

Yes, indeed Kim.

Weeks too late India has been added to the red list. There are over 100 cases of the Indian variant and evidence of community transmission. Why don't they learn? It looks like the government have put politics before health with the risk of the vaccination program being nullified. Why are they so rarely ahead of the game? Even now the restrictions don't come into play until Friday. Nearly 1000 arrivals per day until then. Madness.

I see India has at last been added to the red list from 04:00 hours Still think it's crazy that it took so long!

Callistemon I hope you do not think I am making light of not being able to travel to see family.

No, not at all GrannyGravy, there are many of us in the same position.

Why is India not on the red list?
Given the rising rates of coronavirus and emergence of the concerning variant, many have called on India to be added as a red list country.

Journalist Robert Peston said: “With India’s Covid19 cases at more than 200,000 a day, and worries about a new strain there, it is extraordinary it has not been put on the red list for travel.

“The conspiracy theory from senior Tories is that the PM wants to avoid it going on.”

Westminster correspondent Ben Kentish tweeted: “India still not being on the UK red list despite reporting worrying new variants and 200,000 new cases a day raises serious questions about the purpose of the red list and hotel quarantine policy. If you’re not going to include the riskiest countries, what’s the point of it?”

One of our AC and wife are in a red list country, their daughter (our GC) is on mainland Europe at college. To be honest it’s bluddy heartbreaking, we know it will pass but it’s the not knowing when.

I've just applied for my Equity card.

Are you able to compete at elite level at any sport or have urgent business?

Both qualify for Australian visas at the moment (subject to Covid tests and quarantine)

A journalist was describing on Radio 4 the arrivals hall at Heathrow. People waiting hours to be vetted, queues from different flights standing next to each other, then everyone boarding busses together. And this is before we get the go ahead to take vacations. Nobody should be travelling abroad for holidays this summer if they want to avoid another lockdown or deadly virus variants entering the country. I have close family living in the USA but I shan’t be seeing them until it is safe to do so.

Non-Australians are banned from entering Australia anyway.

Unless they are rich and famous.

Matt Damon, Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, Idris Elba, Liam Neeson....

The Mail again but the Aussie papers are all behind firewalls.

You're mad. What's wrong with your government? Unbelievable stupidity.

Said the woman whose government has only reached 25% of its vaccine targets.

Glass houses.

The vaccine roll-out is slow but there have been no cases in some areas for a while now and fewer than 15 new cases in the whole country.
I know that those in their 60s are being called for vaccination.

I do hope they do increase the roll-out asap and open the borders.

EllanVannin Sat 17-Apr-21 11:50:29

For the virus to have gathered pace so quickly, it's certainly been there far longer than any expert would have you believe.

Alegrias1 Sat 17-Apr-21 11:44:41

Sarcasm rules OK.

I've never called the population of an entire country mad because their government are incompetent. That's quite unpleasant.

Let's split the difference - 15%.

Actually I think it is more like 5% wish it was 25% I’d be happy with that.

I love you too darling. Our government are pretty hopeless, too. No one said anything different though we have controlled the actual spread well. By the way, I am not a politician but I assume from your slightly unpleasant comment that you are a member of the British cabinet?

Teacheranne Sat 17-Apr-21 11:31:12

I’m always amazed by the photos showing people queuing at border control at Heathrow and complaining about how long it takes. I’d like to know why so many people are travelling when we are only supposed to make necessary journeys. They don’t look like business people to me!

I don’t accept travelling abroad to attend a wedding or to see family as necessary when there are many people who have not met with family during the pandemic even when they all live in the UK.

Just get our borders closed to give the scientists time to develop vaccines and treatments for these new variants.

grannyqueenie Sat 17-Apr-21 10:24:35

Bluebelle exactly! How are people to be encouraged to travel responsibly through this summer when public figures seem to be able to bend/break rules all over the place. confused angry

It beggars belief, doesn't it? Jacinda Ardern has played a blinder during this pandemic. She has put New Zealand first. India has described her actions as racist but she has carried on regardless and good for her. It is no earthly use trumpeting the vaccine figures then allowing people to keep swanning into the UK from places we are told not to visit!!

Absolutely Sarnia.
