So this is how it goes.
Queens speech announced the intention of the government repealing the fixed term, thereby allowing Johnson to decide on the next election.
I have read more than once that he is looking at 2023.
Today he announced a covid enquiry to begin in spring 2022, which will not be reporting until after the next pencilled election of 2023.
No daft is he?
Gosh, I must have imagined that election we just had.....
So undemocratic......
Mcem, ahhhh another typical snp supporter who cannot stand other people in Scotland having a view so have to call the opposing comments "rants". What an undemocratic country we live in!!!
Thank God for experts. What a pity so many chose to ignore the experts in 2016.
Thank you railman.

Well said Lin52, it's amazing how many people think they could have done better with an unknown virus with no cure, whilst also dealing with Brexit, a new baby, and the tory bashers in the commons. Hindsight is indeed a most wonderful thing
I repeat - it's not hindsight - this Government were warned in January and February, and into early March, when it was clear what was happening - and reported in the press. But most of the media were obsessed with this stupid Brexit nonsense, and the Public Health Experts were dismissed as scaremongering.
I imagine the same people who said Brexit doomsayers were scaremongering - not sure many fishing industry businesses would say it's been a great success either.

I am just pleased that an enquiry is scheduled.
Until such time as it comes to a conclusion everything is whataboutery and speculations.Actually having carefully watched what was happening over the past year (well, longer because I was well aware of what was beginning to emerge from China last January) and how the government were dealing/reacting to it I’ve got a pretty good idea of what is going to be in the report of the enquiry. Apart from the procurement of vaccine they have been totally always reactive. And still is,looking out how long it took to start quarantining people coming from India.
Well weren’t you clever, they did act earlier in Germany, but they are in an even worse position than we are, rising rates, as in France and Spain poor vaccination rates, due to European and German bureaucracy, have had both mine, 70 year old sister just had hers in Germany. Apart from those Governments who had dealt with SARS, and knew how to deal with this, most Governments were unsure of what to do, didn’t help that China kept it quiet, in compliance with the WHO. Non compliance amongst the population, and Covid deniers all helped towards the spread of this virus. Sick of all the Boris bashing by certain members on here, every touch and turn. Believe we would have been in a bigger mess with Corbyn and Labour.
Fascinating Lin52: - According to the WHO data, Germany had 85,848 deaths, and the UK had 127,651. That is over 40,000 fewer deaths than in the UK,with a population of just under 84 million, compared to the UK's population of a little over 68 million.
On the basis of numbers of deaths alone we have had 48% more fatalities - not taking into account the smaller population.
In terms of vaccinations - as of today, in Germany just under 36 million doses have been administered, and the UK is just under 54 million. That works out at 43% and 79% of the population has been vaccinated.
That's a good result for the UK - but the appalling figures for death and illness are down to the Government's indecision and delay. They also took no account of the recommendations from Exercise Cygnus in 2016, which told the Government point blank it was not in a position to deal with any future pandemic, and its stored equipment and stock was out off date and unusable.
All that and we had already had two significant viral epidemics.
Johnson and his crew were well aware of the rapid spread of the virus in January 2020, and many people - including the likes of the Public Health experts, including Prof. John Ashton and others had already indicated what was needed.
It is not 'Boris Bashing' - it is being critical of failures and incompetence, and drawing up the 'look over there a squirrel' distraction theory with Jeremy Corbyn is no defence of Johnson's failings.

Thankyou for your comments on sturgeon and her insistence that Scotland will be far better in breaking from England.
All my my in-laws live in Scotland and I have lived there too. My hubby was Scottish. And loved his country.
I wasn't aware how crooked the SNP are. Wanting to be part of the EU ....a failing organization and not wanting to be part of England.
Can't get my head round that.
Did you mean not wanting to be part of the UK? I can’t get my head round you thinking England is the UK.
varian
If you add 5 to 2019 do you not get 2024 as the date of the next election?
Just what I was thinking.

The enquiry will take years and cost millions as all other enquiries have. To tell us what we already know. Why not save the time and money to improve the NHS and catch up on the backlog of outstanding operations etc?
There is merit in what you say.

I choose not to delve into the rest of the rant!

You choose not to delve into it because it contains things you don’t like no doubt.
There are Scottish people ( many) who don’t want independence as you probably know, it’s about 50-50 according to polls ( or not far off.)

I’m sad some of those with a vote actually have been hoodwinked to vote for this individual. I feel he’s a disgrace and I’m personally hurt he’s representing my country. He must have some charm to have so many loves in his life. So sad for his children. How could the MPs vote for him as leader. We know nothing about him.
The Labour leader was an MP for 5 years then became leader of the party. Where is his experience? That’s why the country is in such a state. One with no moral code and another still learning on the job.
God help us. Amen

And there we have it

I'm just saying this and then I'm off.
Gordon Brown, paragon of all things Unionist, stated this week that when Johnson (and by implication the government) attack things they see as being the domain of the SNP, or Sturgeon, they are attacking the people of Scotland. Not all of them, sure, but the nearly 50% who do support SNP and/or independence.
And to finish. We've never been part of England and never will be. Although to write that shows the level of understanding of some posters on here.
I’m not sure what these enquiries ever really achieve, though, except to swell the bank balances of the people employed to conduct them.
They invariably take forever and cost millions upon millions.
Boris will do exactly as he wants because that is his upbringing. He has a vast majority which does not enable any feasible opposition. We don’t know how Labour would have reacted to things as they did not gain the power to do so. I know that the vaccination system has been a great logistical success due to scientists and the NHS. Our wonderful Government has squandered millions, given contracts to their mates, looked after jobs for the boys and lied from the outset. I am just getting on with looking after my family and my community. It is the best I can do in the circumstances. I despise this government and their selfishness. It is worse that the Thatcher years !!

I hope they don't spend too much money on the Inquiry. My only interest in the outcome is to highlight things we can take forward in readiness for the next pandemic.
I'm not interested in blame, fault or anything else like that because what's done is done and we need to move forward and learn from any mistakes.
Its naivety to think that any government doesn't choose what they think is the right time to hold an election- sometimes it goes wrong.

So all slate Boris. Who really cares what and if the inquiry takes place and what any results may or may not be. I think if Boris hadn’t of invested so highly in all the vaccines maybe a lot of us wouldn’t be here today to complain. Personally, in my opinion anyone who has has the vaccine should just shut up. Be great full he was prepared to put his money where his mouth was and actually done a really good job of protecting us and our futures. Don’t think Corbin or Starmer would have done such a good job.
Was it Boris's money? Jings.
I guess that's why he didn't have enough left to pay for the decoration of his flat.
Telling people to shut up isn't very nice.

I really despair at our country I just wonder how other prime ministers would have fair over the pandemic boris has been constantly attacked on all fronts by people mainly the media who seem to know better than the scientists ,he had little support from any of the other political parties which given the scale of the pandemic it was a time to all pull together. Sorry rant over
Firstly, I live in Scotland, am scottish and sturgeon and her mob are corrupt and totally untouchable unfortunately. It is a total myth spread by her government and the media which portrays that the vast number of Scots want independence. I know of no one who wants this. We voted in 2014 and thought that that was going to be it for at least a generation. The SNP have talked of nothing else but independence since 2014, even using covid as a platform for their propaganda. It has been disgusting. If Boris does one thing, sturgeon will do the complete opposite, just for the pure hell of it. Her government have absolutely no idea nor will they put it in black and white, how the hell they are going to afford to go independent from Westminster. In Scotland, tax payers already pay higher income tax than those across the border, yet the numbties who vote snp do not even seem to know that. If independence happens, income tax will have to rise significantly. Already tax payers here are contributing to her daft ideas like baby boxes for every baby born, free sanitary stuff, baby fund for all babies and now she wants to give out free bikes to kids from poorer backgrounds. Meanwhile our education system is in the worst state it has ever been in, our roads have giant potholes and our infrastructure is still so poor compared to England and other European countries. Personally, and I thought I would never say this, if she gets independence, I think I will be heading over the border to live, as will some of my family and friends who agree that we would end up living in a terrible country if we stayed in Scotland. As for Boris, I would not want to have his job. Yes I would have closed our island down to all international travel which he hasn't done but there has been other things including the vaccine rollout which has been excellent. Sorry, I will now get off my political soap ?
