Christmas party at Downing Street last year

Families who lost loved ones during the pandemic have said they are "sickened" by a No 10 Christmas party held during last year's Covid restrictions.

The party took place on 18 December, with a source telling the BBC "several dozen" people attended.

But the Covid restrictions operating at the time banned such events.

Boris Johnson - who was not at the party - said no Covid rules were broken, but No 10 has refused to explain how party-goers complied.

For those with short memories. London went into Tier 3 restrictions on 14th December.

‘People must not meet socially indoors or in most outdoor places with anybody they do not live with, or who is not in their support bubble; this includes in any private garden or at most outdoor venues. At other outdoor spaces such as parks or beaches people must not socialise in groups of more than six.’

Very clear indeed that ‘informal gatherings of colleagues’ were not permitted.

It’s all just political points scoring, in Parliament and on social media ( including GN).

lemongrove Fri 03-Dec-21 16:30:47

A gathering of colleagues who work alongside each other anyway is hardly in the same league!
By all means get yourself into a froth about it if you wish to.

Oldbat1 Fri 03-Dec-21 16:30:13

Lemongrove if you are being Pedantic - Christmas isn’t just one day! Twelve days which covers the 18th I believe.

It wasn’t Christmas, it was 18th Dec.
If it turns out there were hundreds and hundreds involved (like the weddings) then I would deem it disgraceful....just as they were.
If it wasn’t, and was just an unofficial gathering of colleagues, then so what.

So what? It was against the law. Are you always so cavalier about which laws should be obeyed and which people should obey them?

The huge ( and they really were huge) weddings that went on during all the strict lockdown were disgraceful, hundreds and hundreds of people attending both the services and receptions.
There was no mention ( in my post) of the race or religion and indeed I think there were many different ones.

Why don't you think the Downing St shindig was disgraceful? Those weddings were dealt with weren't they, I remember items in the news with police attending why is Downing St any different?

This isn’t old news - this was deliberately kept quiet from uk population. We have followed all the rules. Didn’t see anyone over last Christmas. Didn’t go anywhere. Spent Christmas just the two of us. We were doing what was “expected” in the hope of saving lives. This so called Government just can’t help themselves can they? How hard is it to obey the rules. Totally disgraceful behaviour. Our friends son spent his Christmas putting people on ventilators whilst others in Downing Street partied! Sounds par for the course though.

Because I don’t disapprove.
Although I do disapprove of all the very many weddings of more than 400 people that took place covertly in Birmingham, London, Bradford and other venues, even under strict lockdown measures.
Work colleagues were in a bubble in any case.
It’s just potty mouth Rayner trying to gain attention for herself, Starmer too.

Wow- and you will swear you are not racist- I'm sure!

No, we didn't see our family, most did not as travel was not possible, and you were not allowed more than 2 households.

Is there no limit, no limit whatsoever, to your blind supporting of this awful man.

Any more of these posts insinuating racism will be reported kali
You know all about blind support of awful men btw as you said you voted for Corbyn.

Such indignation from others?
No, you couldn't travel out of your area last year, and yes not everybody has relatives and friends in their own area, but plenty do and enjoyed seeing them last Christmas.
DD also had a scaled back office party, everyone being careful, no hugging shaking hands etc, but with food and drinks and music. Why not? They were working all day with each other anyway, so just part of the day.
There is an almost Quaker like attitude from some people about socialising now, even when allowed and when people are more careful. As if, because you won’t do it ....nobody else should either.
I enjoyed last Christmas within the rules and intend to enjoy it again this year too.Cheers?

Nothing to do with Quakers, just obeying the rules your beloved leader set down for us.

We didn't do it because it was against the law and apart from people realising we needed to bring infection rates down you could be fined £10,000 for breaking the law.

We aren't talking about this year are we, we are talking about an illegal party taking place at 10 Downing St.

So because they were south Asian families are we not allowed to criticise them. I too was disgusted at the way they carried on with their weddings, publicised, as if they were exempt, as I was with anyone who broke the rules. It was Sturgeon who banned travel from Scotland. As for the party at Downing St, nothing published at the time, so is it just an embittered ex employee , why keep it quiet until now, smacks of let’s put the boot in while the polls are in our favour.

They weren't all south Asian families, Orthodox Jews did it as well.

So you were disgusted with their weddings as you were with anyone who broke the rules but you seem to think 10 Downing St is exempt because they managed to keep it quiet for a year.

Very puzzling. If you hear about a big wedding that has been kept quiet for a year would you say that was OK now?

So the Asians who broke the rules are to be castigated but our government who also broke the rules are not?

Surely you can be consistent in your opinions? Either it was OK or it wasn't. You can't just point a racist finger.

racism? Where?
What racism?

As far as I can tell Angela Rayner is a redhead.
(Of course, calling her Ginge or Copperknob might be construed as unpleasant, I'll ask my DD what she thinks)

Gallstones are still relevant and bothering people today!!

It is possible that this notorious party was actually attended by a number of journalists but as they were all from the slavishly pro-Tory press, it was kept under wraps until now.

Seem to recall Jeremy Corbin doing something similar

so he was another politician who allegedly failed to follow guidelines? So? The name is Corbyn.

My household stuck to the rules as did our family and friends so yes Lemon we have every right to be more than miffed at Boris and his cronies breaking the rules, and if he wasnt there himself he would have certainly known about it

I did not travel last Christmas. My DD was extremely depressed at the time and was so looking forward to seeing me. It caused her huge distress.

I’m extremely p***ed off that anyone had a Christmas party or large gatherings last Christmas be they the neighbours down the road or those in government.

Government should be setting an example, not treating the electorate with such contempt. There is no excuse at all. TBH, I don’t care whether it was guidance or the rules. That’s playing semantics. If you make the rules or the guidelines you should follow them to the letter. No excuses!

So nobody on here mixed with any family, friends or work colleagues last December ( sound of legs being pulled and bells ringing.)

No lemongrove I didn't. My DS and partner were unable to leave London (remember that advice) and my DD and her partner who both worked from home, spent Xmas day only with us, but left to drive home, in the cold and dark because that was the advice too. So, am I angry? You bloody bet I am. I had only just calmed down from the Barnard Castle fiasco.

I didn’t and neither did my friends and family.
We stuck to the rules and didn’t interpret them to suit ourselves. Obviously others did just as they wanted.

Explains why it's been so hard to control covid doesn't it. Silly you and me obeying the rules.
