Well That’s Christmas Cancelled For Us

Hello everyone.
This is my first post, so please bear with me.
We were supposed to be heading down south to stay with my niece & her family for Christmas. However, she rang yesterday to tell us that her husband had tested positive for coronavirus. Thankfully he is not too unwell (feeling like he has a heavy cold). We have all been acting responsibly and being careful.
My BIL & his wife were supposed to be travelling to them as well from the south west and we were all looking forward to a family Christmas together.
Now it’s everyone staying in their respective homes in different parts of the country.
I know there are people in far worse situations and I don’t mean this to be a moan. We all have someone we can be with over Christmas and we will get together in the New Year.
I was just interested to see if anyone else has been affected this way.

Biden telling us on live tv just now that with Omicron surging we should get vaccinated/boostered and be “concerned” not “panicked”. Struck the right note I thought. He said the majority of hospital admissions were the unvaccinated.

In any case, most people over 60 have "underlying conditions". Are they just to be written off?

growstuff Tue 21-Dec-21 19:54:11

But not many, and as I understand almost entirely those with underlying conditions.

But with the lateral flow tests you can insist anyone coming for Christmas has a lateral flow test before they come in the door.

There is always going to be risks in life. We take risks everyday, most of the time, not even realising it. Just take practical precautions and get on with your lives.

How do you know? I'm afraid nobody knows yet, so you obviously have a soothsayer's magic ball. The picture will be much clearer in the New Year.

I am not cancelling Christmas. All my family are vaccinated, I am vaccinated so I refuse to bow down to this scare mongering. If you are vaccinated this new variant does NOT put you into hospital so I do not know what the fuss is about. It's the government dictating to people again and we should ignore it when we think of the way they broke lockdown. Let's have a big cheer for freedom. We are slowly losing all our rights and people play into it. Let's get back to normal because it's here to stay just like the flu. If you are all vaccinated get on with your lives.

Unfortunately the new variant does end up with hospitalisations, even if people are vaccinated.

*Delta variant is still here and can cause severe symptoms.*
That's true sazzl, here in Devon and Cornwall we are being told that the Delta variant is still around as a result of Boardmasters in August. Unbelievable really, but apparently that is the case.
I hope your DD recovers soon and that your DGD remains symptom free.

The Delta variant is still very much around although most new cases are the Omicron variant.

Delta varient is still here and can cause severe symptoms. DD has cough, cold, severe vertigo, migraine headache with sensitivity to light, neck stiffness on one side, aching joints, breathlessness, fainting, nausea, sleeping all the time. Her 7yr old is now positive too with no symptoms yet on day 1.
DD is Pfizer double vaccinated. Its really much worse than flu for some. And I hate to say the vaccine doesn't seem to protect most people, although I am triple vaccinated as are my family

We have just asked our DS and his family not to come to us for Christmas as one of the DGC is not feeling well . Having isolated for so long and not come into contact with any bugs it just is not worth the risk . I got a large Tesco order this morning so a lot of food to eat up sadly .

I cannot understand this knee jerk reaction to one DGC feeling 'unwell' ? Even if DGC has a version of covid, are you all unvaccinated and at high risk? When are we going to actually put the vaccine to the test? No vaccine destroys a virus we will always have it so when are we going to cope with it and stop it ruling our lives?

Mummer, I am vulnerable, having asthma, so I proceed with caution. I would probably behave in exactly the same way as Floradora. Not everyone is fit and healthy and just gets away with cold-like symptoms. If that were the case no vaccinated people would be in hospital with covid.

M0nica Tue 21-Dec-21 17:43:25

songatress totally with you over family Christmas. Especially as last Christmas DH was critically ill in hospital NOT with COVID and broadly in agreement with all the rest. Especially since the Twitter exchange between Frazer Nelson and Ptofessor Graham Medley.

Hmm...I'm wondering how long all this "tested positive everything cancelled" is going to continue with majority vaccinated? We all can test position en masse for all sorts of things that can take a turn for the worse and have very bad outcomes.'flu being the main one I suppose. The vast majority of cases are mild and some even undetectable do we know the probabilities of huge numbers ending up needing hospital care? Not yet ,but surely not tens of 1000s as pre vaccine? We're going to have to bite the bullet at some point and just soldier on dealing with the serious cases as and when I suppose as with all illnesses. Even the common(not) cold can run to fatal/serious illnesses in some poor souls but we don't all scatter underground. Don't mean to sound laissez faire , just speculative gobbing off?!

Coppernob Tue 21-Dec-21 17:03:08

My daughter and her family were due to be flying in from Italy on Thursday and spending Christmas and New Year with us. After much soul searching she has decided today that they should cancel because of all the uncertainty and lack of clarity. Of course I'm devastated as they haven't been over for 3 years but quite understand her thinking. We'll FaceTime them which will be better than nothing, but not the same as having them here ☹️??

Madashell Tue 21-Dec-21 16:48:23

M0nica - I heard that doctor on the Today programme too. I am absolutely livid that it’s the minority who are unvaccinated causing the majority to be fearful, have their much needed Christmas celebrations cancelled, and a possible further lockdown. If there were any justice the unvaccinated should be quarantined for their own good, for the good of the rest of us who want to get on with our lives and who may be waiting for the NHS to free up so they can have their delayed treatment. I was hoping my one son and his family would come and visit, we’re all vaccinated apart from the 6 year old so who knows. Just booked Christmas Eve lunch at a local pub, am much looking forward to having a meal cooked for me - I hope it’ll still be open by then.

Well things just got worse fuor Xmas as DD is positive for Delta and quite poorly, DIL who was supporting her with shopping chemist runs etc has had a close relative die today - not of covid. Even worse DGC tested positive on LF today. Was negative yesterday so OH walked DGC to the park and back home. Didn't touch DGC but still contact. He came home last night as we live 200 miles away.
So now we can't stay with DS1 or DS2 and DIL, or with DD. We will be delivering presents and leaving them outside then returning home. So fed up but thankful nobody has died in my immediate family. We have everything we need at home but it will be a quiet 10 days.

Sorry to hear this sazz1.

So worrying for you and so little you can do. I really hope your DD recovers quickly. I remember my son in SA had Delta and felt really ill, but after it peaked, he did recover quite quickly, though it took a couple of weeks before the lethargy wore off.

Do what you can, that's all you can do. I hope you manage to enjoy some peaceful moments...

We’re down South, my husband’s younger brother in the North has been very ill with covid
We’ve cancelled our plans and staying home, was only meeting with local family, but decided it’s not worth risking being ill
Fireside, tv, Xmas pyjama day for us two and our old dog
Perfect

We had planned for Get together on 27th my daughter has just had PCR test after positive flow test sounds full of cold and shattered .

vegansrock Tue 21-Dec-21 15:16:05

My youngest DD phoned up today in tears as her LFT has shown positive - she has a bit of a cold so thought to do a test before meeting friends. This means she won’t be with us if her PCR comes back +ve, nor her partner. She only lives round the corner so we said we will do a meals on wheels for her for Christmas dinner! We haven’t seen her for a fortnight as she has been working so fortunately we won’t be contacts, though my sister IL saw her on Friday so she might have to isolate if it’s omicron. My other DD and family should be coming - they all had covid a month ago so hopefully they will be fine. But tbh, as long as my DD and partner are well and don’t get very sick with it is all I care about, they are both triple jabbed, we can do Christmas with them later. Now feeling very unchristmassy but will try to make it fun for the little ones.
