Well That’s Christmas Cancelled For Us

Hello everyone.
This is my first post, so please bear with me.
We were supposed to be heading down south to stay with my niece & her family for Christmas. However, she rang yesterday to tell us that her husband had tested positive for coronavirus. Thankfully he is not too unwell (feeling like he has a heavy cold). We have all been acting responsibly and being careful.
My BIL & his wife were supposed to be travelling to them as well from the south west and we were all looking forward to a family Christmas together.
Now it’s everyone staying in their respective homes in different parts of the country.
I know there are people in far worse situations and I don’t mean this to be a moan. We all have someone we can be with over Christmas and we will get together in the New Year.
I was just interested to see if anyone else has been affected this way.

I am not cancelling Christmas. All my family are vaccinated, I am vaccinated so I refuse to bow down to this scare mongering. If you are vaccinated this new variant does NOT put you into hospital so I do not know what the fuss is about. It's the government dictating to people again and we should ignore it when we think of the way they broke lockdown. Let's have a big cheer for freedom. We are slowly losing all our rights and people play into it. Let's get back to normal because it's here to stay just like the flu. If you are all vaccinated get on with your lives.

songatress totally with you over family Christmas. Especially as last Christmas DH was critically ill in hospital NOT with COVID and broadly in agreement with all the rest. Especially since the Twitter exchange between Frazer Nelson and Ptofessor Graham Medley.

Mummer

Floradora9

We have just asked our DS and his family not to come to us for Christmas as one of the DGC is not feeling well . Having isolated for so long and not come into contact with any bugs it just is not worth the risk . I got a large Tesco order this morning so a lot of food to eat up sadly .

I cannot understand this knee jerk reaction to one DGC feeling 'unwell' ? Even if DGC has a version of covid, are you all unvaccinated and at high risk? When are we going to actually put the vaccine to the test? No vaccine destroys a virus we will always have it so when are we going to cope with it and stop it ruling our lives?

Mummer, I am vulnerable, having asthma, so I proceed with caution. I would probably behave in exactly the same way as Floradora. Not everyone is fit and healthy and just gets away with cold-like symptoms. If that were the case no vaccinated people would be in hospital with covid.

Nope plan full steam ahead all of us x3 jabs done we will do Lat Flows so unless they show positive.. It a Go!

Delta varient is still here and can cause severe symptoms. DD has cough, cold, severe vertigo, migraine headache with sensitivity to light, neck stiffness on one side, aching joints, breathlessness, fainting, nausea, sleeping all the time. Her 7yr old is now positive too with no symptoms yet on day 1.
DD is Pfizer double vaccinated. Its really much worse than flu for some. And I hate to say the vaccine doesn't seem to protect most people, although I am triple vaccinated as are my family

That's true sazzl, here in Devon and Cornwall we are being told that the Delta variant is still around as a result of Boardmasters in August. Unbelievable really, but apparently that is the case.
I hope your DD recovers soon and that your DGD remains symptom free.

The Delta variant is still very much around although most new cases are the Omicron variant.

Unfortunately the new variant does end up with hospitalisations, even if people are vaccinated.

But not many, and as I understand almost entirely those with underlying conditions.

But with the lateral flow tests you can insist anyone coming for Christmas has a lateral flow test before they come in the door.

There is always going to be risks in life. We take risks everyday, most of the time, not even realising it. Just take practical precautions and get on with your lives.

How do you know? I'm afraid nobody knows yet, so you obviously have a soothsayer's magic ball. The picture will be much clearer in the New Year.

growstuff Tue 21-Dec-21 19:54:56

In any case, most people over 60 have "underlying conditions". Are they just to be written off?

Urmstongran Tue 21-Dec-21 20:32:32

Biden telling us on live tv just now that with Omicron surging we should get vaccinated/boostered and be “concerned” not “panicked”. Struck the right note I thought. He said the majority of hospital admissions were the unvaccinated.

beautybumble Tue 21-Dec-21 20:41:52

I've now got covid and I'm here alone. I'm sleeping a lot and watching stuff on youtube. No-one's called today which is usual they all have their own lives. So keeping fingers crossed to get over this soon. Try to enjoy what you do have.

Calistemon Tue 21-Dec-21 20:46:57

Oh dear, get better soon, beautybumble
Do you have plenty of stocks in, including paracetamol and soft drinks?

Hetty58 Tue 21-Dec-21 20:55:02

This is, surely, the worst possible time to take a risk? Hospital staff are off sick, operations postponed due to a shortage of ICU beds - and it's the peak time of year for illness.

Those who decide that celebrating Christmas is, somehow, more important than saving lives are just irresponsible.

M0nica Tue 21-Dec-21 20:58:28

Do most people over 60 have underlying conditions? High blood pressure, under control and statins are unlikely to cause much problem.

vegansrock Tue 21-Dec-21 21:02:55

Hundreds of thousands of people will
Have tested positive this week and will have to cancel their Christmas. Thousands of contacts will be asymptomatic and infect those they mix with. Expect numbers to soar post Christmas.

flowers I hope there's someone to check in on you - if only over the 'phone?

Rest, it seems, is the only option. But make sure you keep hydrated- hydration also plays a part in regulating body temperature.

Can't be very nice being ill and alone at Christmas. I hope you feel better soon. sad

Cases seem to be levelling over the past seven days. Schools have finished for their Christmas break = Less mixing.

Some are beginning to think the UK omicron has peaked.

This I thought was interesting in the Telegraph today, written by Allison Pearson:

“Let me give you one example of the way that our scientist overlords operate.

On December 10, Professor Neil Ferguson pointed out that Covid hospital admissions were about 700 a day.

What he failed to take into account is that such a worrying number would be balanced by around 600 Covid discharges each day. According to my source, the current seven-day average for Covid hospital discharges is 623 per day compared with average admissions of 780.

While both metrics have, indeed, increased, hospital bed occupancy has stayed roughly the same.”

A sense of perspective is, I think, coming over the horizon. The worst cases of the SAGE team have never happened. Get your boosters. Be aware but not panicked.

Daisymae Tue 21-Dec-21 21:18:49

Cases are probably down as schools are out, some have finished work pre Christmas, net result is that there is an awful lot less testing going on. Lest tests, less cases reported. Does not really indicate that it's slowing.

Good post Urmstongran

I agree wholeheartedly - be aware but not panicked.

That is exactly how I'm trying to deal with this (I'm in the extremely vulnerable category).

'Panic' is physiologically damaging anyway...

Thank you Dickens.
When I saw you’d quoted my post my first thought was “oh god what have I got wrong/ who have I upset/annoyed this time?”.

I’m becoming paranoid.

It’s not cases that are the main concern, it’s hospital admissions and deaths.

For what it’s worth, I think Boris has called it right tonight and Sturgeon & Drakeford have jumped the gun.

VioletSky Tue 21-Dec-21 21:37:04

The problem is we have already learnt the hard way that's it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to covid.

Yes the numbers matter on known strains but all the time it's running rampant the way it is more mutations are possible

BlueSky Tue 21-Dec-21 21:37:45

Sorry to hear Beautybumble. Plenty of drinks, hot, cold, soup and ice cream if you don’t fancy eating. And paracetamol to make you feel more human. Can you get online shopping or anybody to shop for you? Get well soon xflowers
