Is now the right time to lift Covid restrictions?

I can’t help thinking that BJ and his Tory cronies are lifting Covid restrictions to deflect the flack away from party-gate with no consideration for the health of the nation. It might give a boost to the economy but this will be short lived if the long term effect is an increase in hospitalisation and deaths from Covid. A gradual lifting of restrictions while keeping an eye on rates of infection would be far more sensible but wouldn’t be such a distraction from the lies and rule breaking that has been going on in No. 10. It’s a case of trying to bury bad news; bad news for Boris.

it will be up to people to use their common sense hopefully most will see that we still have covid and its variants so use masks still, i for one will wear a mask in any public place such as shops because i have COPD and need to look after my heath and do not want to get it i am fully jabbed but see the mask as a way of life for me until we ever rid the world of this

As is often the case with the Tory party, sadly, party before country all the time. Johnson would rather save his job than save the country. Of course we shouldn’t be lifting restrictions. Have you seen the latest figures? Absolutely huge.

Boris is trying to save his own skin at the expense of the vulnerable. We can't all have the vaccine; this is bad news. Simple measures would make a great deal of difference, but no.

Because I have got to the stage of believing nothing that Boris says I am wondering if the baby did have covid. Why wasn’t that revealed at the time rather than making obscure references to ‘a family member’?

maddyone Thu 20-Jan-22 10:22:42

Poor little baby. But like Whitewave I wonder how she got it?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 20-Jan-22 08:32:34

Indeed. And yet Boris is still happy to lift restrictions in an attempt to keep his job.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 20-Jan-22 08:22:05

I wonder how such a tiny baby got it?

Nandalot Thu 20-Jan-22 08:17:00

It appears Romy was the one who had Covid when Johnson was isolating because a family member had Covid and she had it quite badly.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 20-Jan-22 08:15:19

100000 cases a day. All seems a bit premature.

But of course we all know that this decision is neither balanced nor proportionate.

The toddler is playing to the gallery and trying to divert the attention of his minders.

Not just yet I think.

I thought JVT had left the building?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 20-Jan-22 07:40:49

I would have expected to see Chris Whitty or JVT wheeled out yesterday to back the lifting of restrictions. Conspicuous by their absence.

growstuff some people just don't have it

What? Are you including the scientists, that people here quote ad infinitum, and who have backed the government on their lifting of restrictions?

I would sincerely hope that scientists rely on more than "common sense".

I have not heard any views from the scientists or medical professionals who used to be present at the Covid briefings such as Chris Whitty or JVT. Nothing on the BBC News at 10 or in the early editions of on line newspapers.

Could you share what you have heard of them backing the gvt please.

That’s a really good point….

Boris Johnson's Twitter posts this evening are singing the praises of the Conservative's handling of Covid.

He says "Confronted by the nation’s biggest challenge since the Second World War and the worst pandemic since 1918, any government would get some things wrong.

But this government got the big things right. "

Is this him telling us not to worry about the parties because they've done a good job? How does he have the nerve?

How are we being manipulated? Not sure I understand.

Just 3 weeks ago many were saying England/Boris were mad to allow Christmas and New Year celebrations to go ahead.

Many Scots came here and folk were worried that the English would give them covid etc etc

It now would seem that England called this one right.

I am pleased that restrictions are being lifted. It's about time. We can always revert if needs be.

We do seem to be doing better than many European countries and I've no idea why.

He called it right purely by accident. He had to do what his back benchers told him and he struck lucky in that Omicron has proved to be quite mild.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 19-Jan-22 21:21:16

Tbh I think we can all make our own minds up. It has never been terribly sensible to listen to Johnson as he has never had the country’s best interest at heart.

So now that there will be many who are willing to risk the health of their fellow citizens it is probably best to be more vigilant for the time and perhaps until the summer or we can see what is happening with regard to any new variant,

It seems a little foolish to me considering France recorded
nearly half a million new cases yesterday

France have had much tighter restrictions than us for quite a while so that can't be the answer to getting numbers down

Sweetpeasue Wed 19-Jan-22 21:06:09

Yes, I noticed that halflint1.
I know there's cause for optimism but think it's too early.
Anyone know if France records the covid statistics in the same way as ourselves?

No. We’re being manipulated. Tinkering with the reporting system as they have in the last few weeks - no need to take a PCR after a positive LFT etc - is bound to reduce the figures. Now, seemingly we won’t have to isolate at all if we test positive. This is all designed to make us look the other way in light of partygate and as myself and two other members of my household are CEV and not producing enough antibodies after vaccination I’m not falling for it. Will continue to socially distance, wear a mask and only go out if necessary. If we’re not obliged to report or self isolate if we test positive, then no one gets over my doorstep until I see how this pans out.

It is on the wane but it has not disappeared. Far from it.

Callistemon21 Wed 19-Jan-22 20:08:29

Well, a hospital consultant specialising in lung disease thought today that Covid is on the wane.

I doubt very much that she would be a Johnson or even Tory supporter.
