Toula, it is of course, your decision to have a vaccine or not. Do not be influenced by one person. Take all the available peer-reviewed research and make your own decision. All medicine carries some degree of risk but vaccines are not available for use unless the benefits outweighed the risks for the population.
Vaccines have been developed that have saved millions of lives. Herd immunity is complex and without vaccination it is often not possible.
When having a vaccine consider what is most important to you. It could be that preventing money makers from making profit is of higher importance than acquiring protection through a vaccine. I don't like the profitering either but I don't like being sick even more.
There's all sorts of considerations; how much time can you afford to be off-work sick (repeatedly), is there anyone in the family (e.g. obese, diabetic, has MS) who is more likely to be hospitalised or die if they catch it, are you a risk taker and don't mind if you're damaged by a disease?
I hate being sick and don't want the rest of my life ruined by illness more than I'm concerned about billionaires (and I have a massive problem with them and the cost of healthcare).
The AZ is not at all the same as current vaccines for Covid. Anyone who considers all vaccines the same is neither thinking critically nor very smart. If they have a PhD and are spreading the idea that all vaccines are the same they are either seriously misled or feel powerful when spreading conspiracy theories.
If their focus is how much money is being made rather than how many lives are being saved then think twice about believing them. These are two different arguments. They are related but not one subject. There's no doubt people are making money and this needs addressing nevertheless vaccines save lives. The US health system has been gouging money out of people for decades but that's no reason to risk your own health while we try to find a better way (if it is even possible).
Do you buy Nestle products or shop at Amazon (just the first things that came to mind there's hundreds of other things)? These companies do bad things and are making money out of people big time. Do we all shun them? I do, but many don't, they decide the personal benefit, use their personal values and make a choice. Consider doing the same with vaccines. Do you need to stay healthy or do you want a Covid damage lottery ticket? I know that is harsh but so is the disease.
Covid is neither a cold nor flu, the more times you have it the greater the risk of long term health issues. There is no cure for long-covid.
The diseases differ as do the vaccines. I too had a bad reaction to AZ vaccine and so did my brother. My husband was fine. My brother is scared to have another Covid vaccine but I still do.
I have side-effects for 1-3 days after every vaccine but I have weighed up that against the benefits. I don't want flu or to be debilitated by Covid, for example.
We all know enough to understand that all diseases and all vaccines are not the same and that all people do not have the same side effects to a vaccine. AZ was developed too quickly because we needed something very fast. Covid was causing sickness, damaging lives and killing people at alarming rates.
AZ wasn't perfect but it saved more than it damaged. That's hard to consider when thinking just of ourselves. When it comes to thinking about vaccines I admit I think about myself and my family first.
The vaccines that have been developed for Covid now are very different to AZ, not least because there's been more time for research.
I do wonder about the motivations of these people who claim bad things about vaccines. They are not doing it for the good of people, they may be doing it as it makes them feel powerful or that they are making good money from Youtube.
If you're being told things that have not been researched, peer-reviewed and published in reputable journal then it is just an opinion.
I have a PhD, have been a medical researcher and am published. I believe we should all be free to make our own choices as long as it does no harm to others.
My daughter got mild Covid in 2020 prior to vaccines. She's had long covid for almost 5 years now. It has stolen some of the best years of her adult life.
