It began as group support during difficult times and although Covid has faded a little, the friendship has endured and become stronger.

Still here for anyone to join a non-judgemental, caring thread during the often challenging time in life.

We don't have all the answers but in the spirit of Doodle and Cherry who began it all, and with a happy lobster as our mascot, we do offer friendship and often a bit of very cheeky chat.

So pleased you are home Cherry and Grammaretto - so much nicer to recuperate in a place you know and love

On the "building front" re our shed - we had a roof tile delivery yesterday which was the highlight of my day! The tiles are apparently "Loughborough Rosemary's" which is to do with the size and the fact that Tuckers of Loughborough made them by hand. They are slightly bigger than average and have "Loughborough" stamped on the back. These ones came from the roof of an army camp building near Nuneaton apparently where Ghurkas have close links over 200 years.

I love knowing where my reclaimed bits and pieces originated - We have a tiny path at the front of the house made with bricks called by my local reclaim yard owner "dairy blues" - These are actually "Staffordshire Blue Spotted Pavers" and were from a once-smart dairy in Staffordshire. They have raised dots on them so cattle wouldn't slip in the wet.

Well, we are dry again now, but an upsetting time when it happens. We think the land drains were simply overloaded with rainwater from drainpipes, having such large expanses of roofs here. It's my downstairs 'office' (for want of a better word) and it is this room alone which gets 'hammered' if a very bad storm hits. Luckily, the floor is screeded but I have a large Chinese carpet, bookcases (IKEA 'Billy') and an IKEA 'Poang' chair along with my PC and files. All the moveables, including computer desk and office chair, have come from Freecycle - I quite like it as a throw back to student rooms of the past!

Thank you, everyone, for your interest and kind comments.

Much celebration that both Grammaretto and Cherry are back where they belong, even if Grammaretto's hospital stay seemed inordinately short😱. I hope you both have adequate pain relief and are supported suitably by The Professionals. Lighter evenings will be a help even tho' the weather is not conducive to venturing out. So don't even think about it.

Any joy with your silver heart, Doodle?
Did you get any bargains on your shopping trip?

How is your flare up now, Kaimoana? I'm pleased you have decent help in the form of M'lani. Is she your temp for January? I have only just realised, after hours of worry, that you were referring to my salmon terrine. I couldn't work out the reference to trout and was praying that I hadn't posted meaningless drivel. Wouldn't be the first time.

I was in the adjacent room to my 'office' in the basement in DH's man cave/workshop/ Repair Shop/ Tool Station, commonly referred to as the train cellar. (He has built- nay continues to do so - a layout which goes all around the room). I would like to say I was decluttering, but perish the thought. Another of the 'it may come in useful' brigade..

Crikey, says I, I couldn't work in here with all that frantic whirring and clicking going on. Whatever is it?

That, I was reliably informed, was the electricity metre working overtime.

😱

Kaimoana2 Fri 03-Jan-25 20:04:03

ixion train layouts are never finished. smile

I used to have a splendid 00 layout, built uup over several years and much appreciated and used by my younger son.

Sadly, the owners of the house we rented decided to sell up, so it all had to be dismantled and boxed.
The perils of only being a tenant sad

We've never did have the room again and now the only thing which survives is one, N gauge engine which I hoped, in vain, would become the beginnings of a new layout.
That was all in better days when I was working.
Maybe Gubbins will use it one day?

Dispiriting news from the UK but nothing's actually concrete yet, so I can hope.
If DS does decide to stay and work, it's certain sure I won't see Gubbins when the rest of the tribe fly home.

Thanks Kaimoana your words have helped in the past. I’m glad you’ve got a tidy home. Your new helper seems to meet with your approval
Oh Kaimoana I don’t know what to say. That little girl is so precious to you and you to her too. It’s not right children should be deprived of contact with loving parents. This must be so hard for your son too. I pray somehow this issue will resolve itself somehow. Big hug
Grammaretto cake looks wonderful as do the views though not the best weather for someone removing from hip replacement. Please don’t over do things, Hope your family visit soon.
Gracious Notspaghetti I don’t think I understood a word of your first post but I expect it means a lot more to the recipient 🤣
Geography was never my strong point. Mind you I’d struggle to say what my strong point was.
I would love to see your shed and patio when finished. It sounds delightful. How nice to have pieces from different places and to know what you are using,
Ixion I’m glad the flood damage isn’t any worse but must have been difficult to clear up and to get things dry again in this weather.
No joy with the heart sadly but the shopping trip was a big success. I found a new winter coat but not in the sale. When I went to pay for it I noticed a mark on the hood inside. The manager thought it would come off but as it didn’t actually brush off she reduced the price by £21 . I was more than happy and home again a damp cloth removed the mark.
My friend too bought a new coat and hers was in the sale so we are both happy with our purchases
it does seem slightly strange to be buying new clothes things that DH won’t see. I can’t quite explain it but it does feel odd.
Lots of nice dresses for sale the sort of thing I would have bought for a cruise but no need now.
Cherry I hope you’re getting on ok and are on the mend.
I have just heard tonight that my DILs sister who we were with in Christmas Day has fallen walking the dog and broken her hip. They were on holiday in Norfolk so a long way from home

Kaimoana2 Sat 04-Jan-25 00:13:34

Sad news about your DIL's sister Doodle - is she in hospital in Norfolk now or being transported to one nearer home?
I do hope all turns out well but what a sad end to her holiday.

I understand your feelings about new clothing, DH won't see.
They won't feel the same without his added comments:
'That suits you' or 'You look really nice in that' - the little remarks which always gave them that extra blessing.

I rarely buy anything these days except new underwear but if I do, I think how nice it would be to have a compliment.

Of course, if I get desperate, I could always parade in front of my elders group in a pair of new knickers from Kmart........ wink

Yes, I'm praying too, not just about Gubbins but for DS's partner - he deserves better and I think she could be.

Since that 27 degree heat spike, we've had rain, much of it torrential, every single day, with high winds and temperature rarely higher than 22° - cardi weather hmm

I'm off back to bed with a hottie no, not that kind to keep
me warm NOT that kind! and listen to an excellent book called 'Wild History - journeys into Lost Scotland.'
And do a bit of horizontal knitting to try and prove I'm not completely useless.
grin

Ha ha Doodle.. sorry for the confusion.
I was just chatting about the relative sizes of countries and the fact that we are used to seing the round world flattened onto a map in a particular way - in a Mercator devised way of flattening it.

The Peters projection tries to keep the land mass correct in terms of size and it looks very different.
The article I linked to explains how the way the world is presented to us affects the way we think about places/countries/continents

It was just me "meandering" having seen the Australia image posted by Ixion when talking about long car journeys... but of course that was before the flood so it all seems so ridiculously trivial now!

Here are the 2 different maps, anyway!

NotSpaghetti Sat 04-Jan-25 01:41:16

Here are my lovely new-to-us roof tiles... Just in case anyone is interested!
Look away Grammaretto - I think you have probably seen too many tiles of late... and have other things to concentrate on just now!

ixion Sat 04-Jan-25 10:00:56

Kettle's on, Kaimoana.
Pop round for coffee, cake and a hug😢💐

Grammaretto Sat 04-Jan-25 10:13:58

Can I come too ixion?
I'll bring Christmas cake.
🥮☕️ 😋

It is weird Doodle when you do new things for the first time without them.
I bought a microwave. DH wouldn't have one in the house.
But there have been so many disasters here which I have had to deal with by myself that it has made me have to be strong and as his DM said to me "you just have to get on with it" She was a really strong woman.

What a nasty end to that poor woman's holiday too. How is she now?

NotSpaghetti Sat 04-Jan-25 10:25:53

Kaimoana2 are your roads more like those in America - where you can travel long distances relatively easily?

We used to visit friends in their croft in Scotland years ago when our children were small and it took all day to get there (12 hours with pit stops). Even though the roads have improved somewhat it would still take nearly the same today (allowing for stops) even though it's only 500 miles.

I don't miss being the sandwich monitor for seven of us on long journeys! We would have eaten lunch by breakfast time!
Happy days though. The children were pretty good in the car and we had music tapes to sing along to and story tapes to listen to, and lots of games

Grammaretto Sat 04-Jan-25 11:00:11

All those car games NotSpag . Botticelli, Black Magic and endless games of tennis counting tractors v bicycles or red cars v blue etc.

We used to take 3 days to drive to the S of France nearly every year. DH parents had a house there for about
12 years.

Before that it was the Scottish Islands.

I like the tiles. Look forward to seeing them in situ.

ixion Sat 04-Jan-25 11:18:34

Counting 'legs' on pub signs?
My father used to disallow 'The Cricketers', which would have been a guaranteed winner. ☹️

Grammaretto Sat 04-Jan-25 12:40:47

That's a good one ixion. Trouble is you don't get many pubs on motorways or in France for that matter 😳

My visitors took this photo in my garden as they left yesterday. Is that Venus do you think?

Doodle Sat 04-Jan-25 20:04:09

Kaimoana my DIls sister has had her op in Norfolk today. Hopefully she’ll be able to get home soon.
This problem with your son’s wife must be causing you a lot of upset. So hard when they are so far away too. Just hang onto the fact that little girl loves you.
Notspaghetti thank you for the explanation it makes more sense now as do the maps.
Thats a lot of tiles should keep the shed dry
Ixion May I come too. I’m in need of a hug and wouldn’t say no to cake either, 😊
Grammaretto you are right we do have to just keep going. Sometimes I get irrational thoughts that upset me then it knocks me back for a bit till I plod on again. Cried a lot today taking down the Christmas decorations. I was more upset than when I put them up. Good job there weren’t many.
Notspaghetti I remember the car trips with the children too. Are we nearly there yet. 😊
Grammaretto what a lovely photo. Nice bright star.
Im off to the panto tomorrow. Not been for years.

Grammaretto Sat 04-Jan-25 22:23:37

Enjoy the pantomime Doodle
The star is Venus, I discovered. I love that it is. We could do with all the love, couldn't we.

I had a visitor who brought daffodils today. Spring is on the way.

NotSpaghetti Sun 05-Jan-25 02:24:41

I'm behind on catching up here but was drawn to the beautiful daffodils. 🥰

My lovely father always went out of his way to find a bunch (if not in the garden then from somewhere else) for my mum this time of year

Good Morning All. Has anyone got snow? Norfolk is wet wet wet!! We are out to lunch with friends but would rather hibernate at home. Tomorrow is the funeral for one of my very best friends and the forecast is horrendous! Rain rain and more rain. Hello Nfk - have you had a wet dog walk?
So sorry to hear of Ixions flood. Must be so scary.
Hope Doodle enjoyed the pantomime - not my sort of thing I must admit but as I found out when my first husband died you must accept every invitation otherwise you might never get asked again!
Hope you all have a good Sunday - stay warm and dry!!

NfkDumpling Sun 05-Jan-25 11:08:38

Kira is refusing to get off the sofa! I did take her for a reasonable walk yesterday so we can hibernate today. I did go to the compost heap and get some wood in for the fire, and it's very squelchy out. Kira watched with distain! I shall work on the rag rug I started six months ago and watch something on the box.

Grammaretto Sun 05-Jan-25 13:29:26

Kira is the most sensible dog I've ever come across.
She knows it's daft to venture out.
Plenty enough snow here so thankfully I don't have to go anywhere.
One friend has just called and made us both cups of tea and marmalade on toast. She's off now to get home while she still can.

I have 2 NHS hospital booklets , one from Lothian, one from the west. They contradict eachother.
In Lothian you can't shower for weeks. Glasgow you can shower right away!
I think I'll go with the one I prefer.

How was the panto Doodle ?

Yes Jan, my DM told me that about accepting all invitations. It is true!
I have invited a friend several times who keeps refusing. Even though I understand I can't help feeling rejected.

CherryCezzy Sun 05-Jan-25 15:31:53

Thanks for the welcome home everyone. A special thank you for the hug, cwtch and flowers Grammaretto, they are all very much appreciated - may I reciprocate by return with a cwtch and 💐 for you.

Decidedly soggy here too, Jan and Nfk. I knew really that we wouldn't have any snow even though it was forecast, it's incredibly rare as we're too close to the coast.

Nfk, I love Kira, she has a wise head on her shoulders I think.

What, you have booklets, Grammaretto. Why haven't I got booklets 🤔 - mind you by sound of it maybe that's not necessarily a bad thing 🙄. Similarly, however, on showering different Drs gave me different advice, as did different physios. Several nurses told me that any advice not to shower for a period of time was purely because the dressings are not completely waterproof. I have a dressings check at outpatients tomorrow - there are questions that need definitive answers.

Doodle, I hope your DIL's sister is doing okay in hospital in Norwich. It's not easy being in hospital when you're a fair distance from home, I know, I've been there. I hope she isnt in for long 🤞
I haven't been to a panto for a very long time. Back in October a friend went to book for a few of us but it was already sold out. I hope you enjoy it and today any tears are ones of laughter.

I can't wait to see the final result of your project NotSpaghetti, I love the fact that you are using all these wonderful reclaimed materials. It'll be really special.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Jan 💐,

Doodle Sun 05-Jan-25 21:37:49

Forgive the flying visit tonight. I’m really tired….oh no I’m not.
Cherry so pleased your home and hope you are well on the mend soon
Ive been to the panto….oh no I haven’t ….oh yes I have. Sat quite close to the front and got soaked with water from a water pistol but it was all good fun. Lots of laughs and the company of many friends.
So tired now, if you’ll forgive me I’ll catch up tomorrow…oh no I won’t …oh yes I will.
My friends and I have been doing this all day. I expect the “it’s behind you” will have worn off by tomorrow.
Sleep well all

Naughtyneine Mon 06-Jan-25 09:29:29

Lobsters..I am returning to a more human state as each day passes....I will now read ( couldn't before as my head hurt and my eyes ached) and catch up on all that's been happening. Love to you all.

Grammaretto Mon 06-Jan-25 10:46:30

Oh no you didn't Doodle 🤣😂😉

I'm glad Naughtyneine is more human again.

I'm waiting for a call from the District nurses who will hopefully come here to change my dressings etc.

I have already been outside today. I was determined to put my wheelie bin out and had forgotten to ask my visitors to do it. It hasn't been emptied for weeks.
It was nice to be out in the snow, in the dark but I had to be very careful not to slip and it's good to be back in my cosy bed.

ixion Mon 06-Jan-25 16:21:06

Gosh, Grammaretto - that was a brave thing to do. Please take care I don't think that kind of perambulation is in your New Hip Guide(s).
Is your snow clearing? I was channel hopping the News this morning and saw your neck of the woods featured. I awoke to snow on snow, but it has mostly cleared now - at least from the critical areas like pavements and roads.

Pleased that NN and Cherry are also on the mend and that Doodle found it in her heart to go to a Christmas panto.
They were for us happy times during my childhood. My grandparents used to hire a box at our provincial theatre and we would have a great time with our cousins. At least we were safe from the buckets of water and glitter and could hide at the back in the darkness when the roving spotlight sought a hapless victim to go onstage🫣.
There was the famous occasion when, during the interval at the bar, my father requested a vodka and bitter lemon for Grandma. ^ I'm sorry Sir^, came the reply. We only have slices of lemon..
I remember once praying that I would grow up to be as beautiful as Princess Esmeralda. Darn.

Any news of Gubbins and DS, Kaimoana? Praying for a happy resolution for you 🕯️.

First world problem alert...
I have found the solution as to why I was putting both of my new Next jumpers on back to front🤔. Prior to putting my head into said jumpers, I was placing the side seam label to the left. As per tradition.
It transpires that the labels were sewn into the right underarm seam.

Anyone know why? I bet Kaimoana does 😉

NotSpaghetti Mon 06-Jan-25 16:46:43

Oh crikey, I would have put them on back to front too Ixion!
