Keeping up with new music

Saw the Pierce Sisters do an accoustic set at Glastonbury last week and was very impressed. Had also seen them on Later with Jools and was also impressed then. However, checked them out on utunes a couple of times and didn't like the stuff on their albums. Thought I'd risk £8 at tescos yesterday and found it's the most beautiful album. Very melodic with beautiful hamonies; shades of the Everly Brothers, Mammas and Pappas and Stevie Nicks. Perfect for a summers day, waiting for Wimbledon to start. Sublime.

I went to a classical concert recently, needed the loo and wasn't allowed back in until a 'suitable' break in the programme. I could understand it if I was in the middle of a row and people would have been inconvenienced but I particularly had an aisle seat because I can't last out and would have disturbed noone. I pointed this out and the fact that everyone was singing Land of Hope & Glory and wouldn't notice me anyway and the usherette let me in. The toing and froing of the Chas & Dave concert was a complete contrast and I was able to relax and enjoy the show without worrying. So there are some good things about 'modern' music I've discovered

Now I like some of the new young female singers - Laura Marling, Joss Stone, love Elbow, and could listen all day to their lyrics.

Bellowhead doing Glastonbury @ 5.30 Sunday. BBC2, I think. However,they don't come over so well on the telly.

goldengirl It must have been Lindisfarne you saw at The Rainbow because "a wet on the wall" comes from Fog on the Tyne.
I'm also amazed by people walking in & out during theatre performances. At one time they wouldn't let you in until a "suitable break" in the performance if you arrived late. We went to see something recently and people were talking or pushing past the whole time.

Crikey! I'm well out of touch though I went to see Chas & Dave recently and it was really good fun - not new music though. Chas's daughter had her own spot and was very much like Katie Melua [one of my favourites] and Chas's son played the drums. The audience was wide ranging and we all joined in. Although it was in a theatre people were going in and out all the time to refill their glasses. Apparently this is what happens these days according to my son.
We did take my brother in law to The Rainbow a couple of times when he was in his teens but I can't remember who was on except that they were singing about having 'a wet on the wall' . He introduced me to ELP and a couple other bands which I enjoyed but can't remember their names!

grannyrosie & crimson Saw Status Quo at Westonbirt Arboretum last year. It was an excellent concert and would have been worth going to just to see the grey haired audience (including my husband) playing air guitars.

I saw Take that with Robbie Williams last night. Brilliant show.

Went to see We Will Rock You recently. Two thirds of the audience had grey hair but we lived it. We all stood up and clapped to Radio Gaga and waved our arms to We Are the Champions and sang everything we could. Who cares what the young enjoy this was class music enjoyed that will live on

I was going oop north on 2ist August, but might consider travelling up early to catch the Status Quo concert....sounds like fun! Always remember hearing 'Pictures of Matchstick Men' for the first time. Bought the new Strokes cd last week; it's ok, but no better than their previous stuff. And the new Fleet Foxes; the last one grew on me and this one needs to as well. The good thing about seeing folk groups is that there is such a wide age range. I was once given a ticket to see Jamie T play, and I realised I couldn't go because I would have been twice as old as everyone else.

Love Bill Haley, Elvis, Buddy Holly, etc. My son and daughter-in-law are taking me to see Status Quo in August at Alnwick Castle which I am really looking forward to. Jazz and Blues I love too, but not very knowledgable about it, including Scott Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, etc.

When I was a teenager Ronnie Scott used to come once a month to play at our local pub which was wonderful. Favourite at the moment is Brian Seltzer from The Stray Cats.

I have Radio 1 playing in the background all day, and love current music, although couldn't always name the artist or title. I buy an occasional CD, the latest being Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga,David Guetta and Slash.
I love the old rock songs too, my favourie of all time being 'Don't Want to Miss a Thing' by Aerosmith. Has anyone been watching American Idol where their lead singer Steven Tyler is a judge? I have been captivated by him!

Magsie, at Bellowhead concerts the ages of the members of the audience may range from 7 to 70! I am a member of a forum for the fans of Spiers and Boden (the founder members of Bellowhead) and 3 of the members are grandmother, daughter and grandson, the grandmother being in her late fifties.

Bellowhead are on at the Leadmill in Sheffield in November so I should be able to get tickets. I just worry about going to places where I'm not sure how old the clientele will be!

Yes; it was such a shock when I went to see Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band a few years ago and her daughter appeared on stage with them! I like seeing Bellowhead, but don't particularly like listening to their cd's. Same goes for The Unthanks. Supposedly, the latest Unthank cd is much lighter than previous ones, which is probably because they couldn't get much darker! The girls did a lovely programme on BBC4 about clog dancing not long ago..I do like a bit of clog dancing!

I've been inspired to look for Bellowhead concerts by your recommendation and there are a couple of venues I could get to. I think I saw them on the folk awards?
I like Eliza Carthy better now that she is doing her own songs rather than more traditional stuff. I've been going to folky stuff since the 80's which means that I'm now starting to listen to the children of the original artists!

I think Bellowhead should be available on the NHS. I always feel good when I come out of their concerts. I have seen Eliza Carthy several times over the years. She has so much energy.I don't like the Unthanks - not too sure about their voices.

I forgot Oscar Peterson: How he plunged into those harmonic mazes and always came out on the beat I found truly amazing. He died in 2007 aged 82 loaded with so many honours that he was rightly regarded as the greatest Canadian of all time. He also met Nelson Mandela.

Why I forgot to mention him I can't imagine.

My interest stems mainly from those distant times when I studied piano reaching Grade 6 Associated Board. But that was before I became interested in girls!

Went to see The Unthanks as well a while ago; can't say I'd recommend them to people and didn't think I'd want to see them again [although I'm glad I saw them when I did]. However they're playing round here again in the Autum, this time with a brass band, so I think I'll book tickets. I also like The Oysterband. Have never seen Eliza Carthy, although I've got a few of her cd's. We saw Show of Hands at Southwell Minster last year, which was a bit special. I liked The Burns Unit on Jools the other night, and realised they're playing in Edinburgh when I'm oop north later in the summer, so I may try to get tickets to see them. Bellowhead are great fun, aren't they? Saw them at quite a small venue last autumn, but I think they need a big stage [well, there are a lot of them!]. Got an image in my head of lots of grannies jumping around, now!

I am a bit of a folky too! I saw Show of Hands about a month ago- Brilliant! The majority of the audience were older people though. I am going to see Eliza Carthy again this Friday- I think she is very talented.

A venue near us has started monthly Northern Soul nights. Not something I was keen on first time round but I'm thinking of giving it a try.

I am a bit of a folky an enjoy Show of Hands and Bellowhead. There are lot of Grannies around who appreciate Bellowhead and who can be seen jumping around at their concerts.

I'd like to find out more about classical music; it's all out there waiting for me to discover it. I suppose I should try listening to Classic FM or whatever it's called.
