It seems to me that they are genuine. Apparently a box of four plates, of the size Laing used, cost more than the average working man’s daily wage, so it was very much the hobby of a rich photographer, and you wouldn't get many people doing it commercially.

as usual I doubt if the link will work 
but I saw some photos by this woman in a magazine the other day and still can't believe it isn't some sort of hoax [like those fairy photos].
