Philosophical ideas to get through hard times

I would like to start a thread about what we can learn from the old stoics and philosophers and there is much to know about there take on life and then how we can apply that to 21st living.

I liked this so here goes

An old Cherokee was teaching his grandson about life.
"A fight is going on inside me" he said to the boys. It is a fight between two wolves. One has anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, self-pity, guilt, lies and ego."
He continued; "The other is good- he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, kindness, empathy, truth, compassion and faith.
"The same fight is going on inside you too Grandson - and inside every other person too."
The Grandson looked and asked "Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee simply replied "The one you feed".

Hope this message helps.

Practising the Power of Now.

When you surrender to what is
And so become fully present,
The past ceases to have any power.
The realm of being then has the possibility of blossoming beautifully.

Suddenly a great stillness arises within you,
An unfathomable sense of peace.
And within that peace, there is great joy.
And within that joy, there is love.
And at the innermost core, there is the sacred, the immeasurable, that which cannot be named.

- Eckhart Tolle

I love the use of the word unfathomable in this context.
Take care everybody.

Do they swing to n fro?
Can you tie them in a knot?
Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them over your shoulder like a regimental shoulder
Do your boobs hang low ?"

We spend precious hours fearing the inevitable. It would be wise to use that time adoring our families, cherishing our friends and living our lives.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be

Three simple rules in life: If you do not go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you do not ask, the answer will always be no. If you do not step forward, you will always be in the same place.

To be honest Dawn its International day of the nurse today and Florence's 200th birthday and I find it very strange that we all stand on our doorstep and clap for the NHS on a Thursday but no one has mentioned this on Gransnet today except me in various threads. I am a retired nurse and I tell you I'm thankful I'm retired because I certainly dont have the courage these people require working in the care system today. All we had to contend with was cockroach infestations.

Dawn22 Tue 12-May-20 22:34:44

Beautiful quote above May.
I remember being very sick in hospital and 2 or maybe 3 of the nurses gave out to me just because they could. I was very ill and asked for a cup of tea. Cross. I had to use the hospital phone. Very cross. Old wretches wherever they are now.

What are we if not kind in this life especially to people who are not well. Well done Florence.

The very first requirement in a hospital is that it should do the sick no harm.
