Philosophical ideas to get through hard times

I would like to start a thread about what we can learn from the old stoics and philosophers and there is much to know about there take on life and then how we can apply that to 21st living.

I liked this so here goes

An old Cherokee was teaching his grandson about life.
"A fight is going on inside me" he said to the boys. It is a fight between two wolves. One has anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, self-pity, guilt, lies and ego."
He continued; "The other is good- he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, kindness, empathy, truth, compassion and faith.
"The same fight is going on inside you too Grandson - and inside every other person too."
The Grandson looked and asked "Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee simply replied "The one you feed".

Hope this message helps.

"For the Stoic, the entire cosmos, with all its joys and pains, grandeurs and abysses was an eternally repeated cycle of creation and dissolution, without beginning or end and the highest philosophical virtue was the cultivation of perfect detachment, in a soul immune to the effects of time and nature alike."
- DB Hart.

If only to have this type of thinking in this day and age but rather challenging. Heavy thinking that someone gave me.

Give me the courage to change the things I can.
The grace to accept the things I can't.
The wisdom to know the difference.

Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible God and slaughters a visible Nature without realizing that this Nature he slaughters is this invisible God he worships. – Hubert Reeves

Postscript by Seamus Heaney

And some time make the time to drive out west
Into County Clare, along the Flaggy Shore.
In September or October when the wind
And the light are working off each other
So that the ocean on one side is wild
With foam and glitter; and inland among stones
The surface of a slate-grey lake is lit
By the earthed lightning of a flock of swans,
There feathers roughed and rifling, white on white,
Their fully grown headstrong-looking heads
Tucked or cresting or busy underwater.
Unless to think you'll park and capture it
More thoroughly. You are neither here nor there,
A hurry through which known and strange things pass
As big soft buffetings come at the car sideways
And catch the heart off guard and blow it open.

Of you By Norman Maccaig.

When the little devil, panic
Begins to grin and jump about
In my heart, in my brain, in my muscles
I am shown the path l had lost
In the mountain mist
I'm writing of you.

When the pain that will kill me
Is about to be unbearable,
A cool hand
Puts a tablet on my tongue and the pain dwindles away and vanishes.
I'm writing of you.

There are fires to be suffered
The blaze of cruelty, the smoulder of inextinguishable longing, even
The gentle candleflame of peace
That burns too.

I suffer them. I survive.
I'm writing of you.

I took this from a book called The Emergency Poet by Deborah Alma. It is a bit downbeat but relevant too. I always found Easter a lonely time as a child, too many hard devotions for a small child; in latter years l had better Easter times but this is yet again a very different type of Easter for all of us.

Take care everybody from Dawn.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.

Epictetus thinking

In times of stress divide your moment to moment concerns into 2 bins. The things you can control put into your small bin and the things you have no control over (which are many particularly at the moment) put into a larger bin and leave there. Just be responsible for your own actions and choices; that is enough.

Take care everyone today.
