There’s a problem with a lot of acts of protest - the act itself becomes the focus, distracting from the intended message.

I don't think he would have done that. He has too much integrity.

Well the clip that was shown on TV of him shredding the money never gave a close-up of the money, so he could have been shredding monopoly money for all we know. I certainly hope it was just a publicity stunt and he didn't shred genuine money. He could then have secretly donated the £10,000 to a charity.

Callistemon21 so as someone who supports all those projects, why is he also supporting this notorious regime. He is not donating money to them - but he is giving them his presence and tacit encouragement.

I don't blame Qatar for this. I blame FIFA

Oh yes I'm well aware of David Beckhams generosity.

I just thought he could make a gesture.

And yes, Joe can do what he wants with his money.

He's now got massive publicity

£10000 wouldn't buy the publicity that Joe Lycett has generated for the hypocrisy of it all. Well done him.

I hold no brief for David Beckham but just wonder why he is being singled out for the hate? What about all the other people being paid to go to Qatar, the players, commentators, trainers, support staff, press etc They too are taking money to endorse these games. I don’t think the size of payment overrules or absolves any of them having responsibility for their own action. I hold every one of them in contempt for their disregard of what they’re endorsing.

If David Beckham isn't bothered by the fact that Joe Lycett is prepared to throw away away £10K of his own earned money to gamble on the possibility of DB having strong enough convictions about his (DBs) well-publicised philanthropic principles to forgo adding to his already massive bank balance, then it says a lot lore about DB than about JL.

And as a publicity stunt, it has worked pretty well, hasn't it? Here we are, arguing about whether it it is better/worse to be a hypocritical major millionaire celebrity or to be a passionate and reckless minor celebrity that the major celeb may not have heard of.

Joe Lycett used to get on my wick a bit camping it up on the Great British Sewing Bee, but in this situation I'd vote for Joe. He put his money where his heart was.

For those who don't understand Joe Lycett has a track record of standing up for the rights of ordinary people and opposing big business.
So he could have donated to charity-but who would report that?
So he burned £10,000 oof his own money to show how much he despises people like David Beckham who will go to somewhere like Qatar to make more when he already has so much.
Beckham will have heard of him.

I think Lycett’s actions are coming from a genuine sense of anger and injustice.
Many people are extremely angry about the World Cup going to Qatar and all that it entails. Including FIFA being corrupt.
I think that Beckham (and his wife) are probably already regretting his actions.
But he was far too down the line to back out.
