I love autumn! I'm from the North East but I live in Gozo now so miss the autumnal weather. I loved your poem it really invoked the essence of the season and happy memories. Keep writing you're really good.

I throughly enjoy the creative writing group. There could have been more people there but the weather wasn’t too good. I enjoyed the company, helpful advice and tips. We had to write out two poems using the words she provided. I loved reading mine out to the group and they were very complementary. It really cheered me up.

Yes, creative writing groups can be great. They can provide company, discussion, support and perhaps some helpful comments on your work..

That's very moving purplepixie. I had a tear in my eye, such was your evocation of the autumn in all its glory. It brought back memories of my own dad, digging diligently away at our large vegetable garden. He didn't enter competitions, it's not such a big thing in the West Country, but it did feed the family and I used to love "helping" him as a young child. In truth I was hanging around for a freshly podded pea or broad bean!

Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for posting, I loved your poem. I'm sure it will make many of us think about our fathers.

Thank you for sharing your poem. So evocative of Autumn and a reminder of all the flower and produce shows with such lovely sights and smells. Most of all a poignant tribute to your father, his hard work in the garden and his success in the competitions.

Hi all. I have just started to write some poems. All of which helps with my shaky mental health these days. Thank you for reading

September - Leek show time (north east, UK)

Smoke from garden fires hung heavy in the air
Aromas of beech and blackthorn mingled with my hair

The beautiful light of autumn bathed the land in gold
Oh how I wish that my dad would never ever get old

He pottered about in his greenhouse with plants of every kind
Nothing was too much trouble nor a chore or a bind

September brought the leek shows and all that it entailed
Vegetable were cleaned, prepared and even some de-snailed

The day arrived with excitement to see just what he had won
Maybe some furniture or a tea-set but he wouldn’t be out done

Leek show weekends were special and we really should not mock
Heads held high, chests fluffed out and sometimes we did get a shock

Once dad came first and mam was full of joy as we carried away the prize
There before us in the sitting room stood a cocktail cabinet to gladden the eyes

Another year over and plans to grow more prizes vegetables and leeks
The beds would be dug and manure planted for the secrets and the tweeks!

Dad I miss you so much and you were taken from us all to young and too soon
No more hurrying to the leek shows and instead I think of you as I gaze upon the MOON!!!!!
