Dad - where’s me sledge?

The dog barked in the distance in the dead of a winters night
Something must have spooked it or given it a fright

Snow was swirling around the light as the wind blew from the north
A fox stole stealthily back to its family with some food to bring forth

Snow was glistening on the hillside in the light of the silvery moon
Seed heads swayed in the whispers of a night breeze like a wicked cartoon

Gather up your thoughts and don’t let them cram you head
Or deep in the darkness they will crush you while you are in bed

Think of only nice things that dance fairylike across your mind
Bringing all of those people back to life who used to be so kind.

DAD I miss you so much as I look into the twinkling dark sky
You gave me strength and personality and I didn’t get to say goodbye

I watch silently as the night turns into a cold and crisp sunny day
Thinking about your kindness and all the words I want to say

Kind words of wisdom you reigned upon me as I grew into a girl
Sitting beside me through life and yet my head still remains in a whirl

Your life was so short yet you managed to stay in my heart forever
I listen to your words and try to finish everything that I endeavour

I think about you each time it snows as you made the best sledges
Never complained or moaned as you set about keeping your pledges

The snow is here DAD - so where’s me sledge?

Thank you for reading. Dad died back in 1971. I was only young and it was sudden due to cancer.

What a wonderful tribute to your Dad

WWW you've inspired me to write something similar for my own dad, who fortunately was not particularly young when he died but nor was he as old as I had expected him to be.

I wish he had seen his two DGDs married and met their DHs and my two GCs - he'd have loved them both, and they him.

My DD also built me a sledge - the fastest in the street - and the strongest swing ever (made of tree trunks). Four of us could hand on it together!

Thank you all so much.

That is so moving, I shed a tear. My dad died suddenly when I was only young as well.
I kept his reading glasses in their case.
Thanx for this 🥰🥰

Thank you whywhywhy. What a beautiful tribute to your Dad, it's made me quite tearful. My Dad lived to the ripe old age of 94 , he died 8 years ago and I still miss him but this has reminded me of all the love and care he gave me over the years.

I too lost my Father, 42 years ago, very young, on January 7th, just 3 weeks after his 59th birthday. He built me and my brother a wonderful sledge, green top on bright red runners, went like a rocket with his weight on it! Subsequently gave it to my Grandchildren a few years ago.
I never got to say goodbye and so wish I could have a chat with him again.
Love your tribute and feel your love for your Dad.

Thank you all so very very much. My youngest son reminds me of my dad. Such genuine kind nature. Sometimes when he looks at me and smiles then I can feel my dads presence and a warm invisible wrap goes around me. I miss my dad so much yet he was gone when I was a teenager.🤗
