Has anyone tried Nordic Walking? I had a taster session and quite fancy it.
Problem is that I have arthritis and never know how far I can comfortably walk. Also I am not really an outdoor person especially when the weather is very hot.

Hi Noogie what type footwear is required ?

Think you can wear anything comfortable on your feet but you have to have two tall walking sticks in your hands [they did a 'course' at our local country park, which I didn't have time to go on. I did find one walking stick on my travels, but I think it would make me a bit lopsided. I'd imagine it's quite good if you have arthritis in your knees [which I have] as your arms take a bit of pressure off your knees. I must try it one day, as I used to walk for miles before my knees wore out [probably why they wore out..had I been a couch potato they'd be fine now!]. When I lived in Cornwall I didn't have a transport [bunic will understand this] and I used to walk to the pub on a Saturday night; problem being I lived in St Tudy and the pub was the Cobweb in Boscastle. that took a few years off me knees, I reckon.

As far as I know any comfortable walking shoes will do and you are provided with two (quite light) sticks which while taking some of the pressure off your lower body, give your upper body a workout! As I said I get a bit hot and bothered in the warm weather. I think that I was hoping that someone would tell me that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. I too used to love walking and I definitely need to lose weight and build up my stamina. I have a club locally that I can join, why am I trying to talk myself out of it?

Sounds good if there's a club near to you as well. I used to walk in the peak district every weekend and I so miss it. I'm just not sure what I can do these days, and I'd feel a right lemon having to give up half way through the walk [how would I get back confused? Trouble with using the sticks is, where do I hold the dog's lead?

I've just emailed someone who arranges walks in the Peak District. Watch this space!

I'd love to have a go and will investigate locally. There will have to be a loo in the vicinity though just in case.......blush

Strange how one can be in the middle of nowehere with no one in sight for miles..disappear behind a hedge for a call of nature and people appear from nowhere..in my case, many years ago a whole troup [is that the correct word] of boy scoutsblush.
