I thought it might help motivate us all to do more in the way of exercise if we keep a running thread as a fitness log. We can use it to record any fitness activity we do, and encourage/applaud each others' efforts.

Any and all levels of fitness welcome - as are recommendations of good forms of exercise to take up.

I have high blood pressure, so I need to do more exercise and lose some weight (quite urgently).

Today I leapt out of bed - OK, I heaved myself out of bed - grin, got to the gym, did 30 minutes on the exercise bike and 30 minutes in the outdoor pool. The sun was shining, and, honestly, it was glorious. Not to mention how pleased I was with myself. smile

Well done annodomini .

I have exercised by getting in and out of the bath - also clearing the tumble dryer which I all too frequently forget to do until I realise I am short of socks.

I have just been to a U3A pilates class. My leg muscles feel wobbly so I must have been doing something right.

Have you excercised your right arm by raising it to your mouth with a cuppatea? That's the next step.....

Opened my eyes this morning! Does this count?

AlieOxon Wed 10-Oct-12 10:16:36

It's a bit late to do any more in the past!

I garden, mainly, at intervals. I do knee exercises as well - since I had a spell of tripping - but new shoes have helped too.

annodomini Wed 03-Oct-12 14:28:33

Sounds like exercise to me, Alie. grin

AlieOxon Wed 03-Oct-12 14:18:51

Does sitting in my armchair with a small hand weight, trying to get my right forearm muscles up to scratch again after my wrist break, count as 'exercise' ??
I try and do it several times a day when the adverts come on TV.....

Nanadogsbody Wed 03-Oct-12 14:00:45

I totally agree with that Jo4, it's quite hard to be kind to oneself when we have spent most of our lives putting ourselves under pressure to get everything done!
I keep trying though grin

Wise woman that jingle - or are we just relieved that she's said just what we all wanted to hear?

gracesmum Mon 06-Aug-12 11:47:54

Thank you jo4 exactly what I need to hear too!

Annobel Mon 06-Aug-12 11:33:12

Thanks jingl. Just what I wanted to hear. I was pretty active until quite recently.

Anagram Mon 06-Aug-12 11:12:02

Wise words, jingl!

JO4 Mon 06-Aug-12 11:09:04

...........and with that. she took her book out into the garden where she intends to stay until at least 4 o'clock. smile

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that, once you get to our age, it's the exercise you have done in the past that will now stand you in good staid.

I think if you go all out for a lot of gym sessions, long distance walking and other too strenuous stuff now, you will just tire yourself and that will make you feel miserable. I'm not advocating inactivity, far from it. But I think it's fine to have days when you don't do much exercise at all. And I think the everyday kind of exercising, like walking or biking to the shops is probably best for us now.

Tiredness is responsible for a lot of the 'down' feelings we can get at this time of life. You need to be a bit kind to yourself. If you have a day when you have done a lot of anything, then have the next day off.

Annobel Mon 06-Aug-12 10:16:48

gracesmum, I am sure you have just said what has been in all out minds only we were far too polite to say it. hmm

gracesmum Mon 06-Aug-12 10:12:20

fartlek sounds ominously like what occurs when I try to do yoga. Please tell me it's not as rude as it sounds? blush

When carrying bags of shopping I do a variation on "scouts' pace" changing the bag to the other hand at each lamp-pos, but a backpack is better - distributes the weight over the hips and shoulders.

I've always understood scouts' pace to be twenty walking steps and twenty jogging steps done alternately. An alternative to a brisk walk, I suppose.

jeni Sun 05-Aug-12 17:20:18

I couldn't do it with my asthma! You had to do a mile in so many minutes!
bags do they still have it?

Annobel Sun 05-Aug-12 17:14:59

When my guide company did 'scouts' pace', it wasn't exactly fast running - more like jogging alternating with strolling. We weren't one of those high-powered units that win hundreds of badges!

jeni Sun 05-Aug-12 17:02:42

Fartlek sounds like the old 'scouts pace' to me!
