Granb, how dreadfully sad for all of you, but well done for doing something positive with your grief.
I've not had the time, inclination or energy for walking for the last 14 months while looking after dad,but now he is around the corner I can tag him onto the end of my walks!
So just done a moderate one to start me off!
I've lost such a lot of my fitness though and my arthritis is holding me back at my exercise classes too.
Big hill to climb....small steps to start

Exercise log - all welcome - any fitness activity, please post it here
(226 Posts)I thought it might help motivate us all to do more in the way of exercise if we keep a running thread as a fitness log. We can use it to record any fitness activity we do, and encourage/applaud each others' efforts.
Any and all levels of fitness welcome - as are recommendations of good forms of exercise to take up.
I have high blood pressure, so I need to do more exercise and lose some weight (quite urgently).
Today I leapt out of bed - OK, I heaved myself out of bed -
, got to the gym, did 30 minutes on the exercise bike and 30 minutes in the outdoor pool. The sun was shining, and, honestly, it was glorious. Not to mention how pleased I was with myself.
Granb, I'm full of admiration for your bravery and determination. Keep us posted as to progress, won't you? We'll look forward to reading your posts.
granb
Go granb and enjoy the nicer weather.
Good for you Grenb - what a dreadful tragedy -sending you my heartfelt sympathy, I feel as a grandparent you suffer twice over - both as a Gran and as a parent.

Did it. Walk (well amble really) was a bit wet and windy but felt good.
Got bike out to do ride...helmet (check), lumi jacket (check), padlock and chain (just in case) (check). All ready to go then remembered OH says always check gears and chain etc. Gears ok but chain.... funny rust colour. Quick break whilst checked how to oil a chain - I know, I know it is a really, really easy thing to do. Had to watch a number of vids first tho whilst having a coffee and peanut butter sandwich! I just love the internet .... allows all sorts of excuses for prevarication and diversion.
Anyway - chain suitably doused, did ride.
Have no idea how long they both took
Very easy route. Ony 1 hill and a couple of slight inclines. Also I really do not have too much of an excuse for not being able to do this fitness wise - am in early 50's. Used to be very fit until diagnosed with UA Thyroid - now slowed right down and stiffened up.
Am going to do this every day. Over next week just very easily at first and then start timing myself from 1st March. This is going to be a sort of personal challenge.
Lost baby grandson on 6th January. He was born on Xmas Eve. Absolutely devastated. His daddy and uncle are doing a couple of fundraising things (BUPA 10k and Everest Base Camp walk). I needed something to get me up and going (I have found it so easy to wrap my grief around me and become so totally self-absorbed by it) (also thyroid prob means very easy to decide not to do things!!!). My goal therefore is to walk the equivalent distance from Lands End to JOG and cycle the equivalent distance back. Distance is just over 600 miles one way and therefore think if I start properly on 1st March then will take me 118 days to complete which should mean I will just about be home (!) for Father's Day. Am going to use it as a way of raising funds for the charities son and DIL have nominated.
Just off now to do day 2's ride while there is still a bit of blue in the sky... now where did I put my helmet....
Well done moomin . Easy does it. Hope it stops raining in NZ soon. Say hi to it from me.
I started jogging last year in May, prompted by my 60th. ALso the fact that my ozzie grandkids are extremely active and live at the top of a very steep hill. When i go out there and look after them it is physically demanding.
Before that I was going to gym and diddling around really. Not very fit and not getting any fitter.
Still feels hard some days. Things don't improve rapidly when you are older, particularly if you have never been very fit. But keeping going, trying to convince my legs that this is what they do, nearly every day, honestly legs, you do!
I am enjoying the extra leg strength and bounce. I also have more of a waist these days. It gives me very sore muscles at the top of my backside. Recently discovered that getting DH to give them serious massage grief does help.
Greatnan - staying in North Shore, Auckland, rained all day!
Just come back from my first go at yoga for 12 years!! Have had hot bath and fingers crossed I can still walk tomorrow!
My sister's women's group do exercises to music, sitting down. She says it is great fun.
I am dying to begin my long walks again, and now I have had enough of snow! I have put on 3 lbs. (still below my target weight of 10 st. 7 lbs though) but I am not bothered by that - I just miss my exercise. I have been walking on the snow-packed lanes, but I can't swing along briskly as I usually do. I am playing some 50's music tapes and having a bop in the flat.
Moomin - there seems to be quite a few of us who have family in NZ - where are you staying?
You could exercise your core muscles Jeni. Pulling in your tum and p. floor muscles. Trying to sit up as straight as possible, as much of the time as you can really strengthens the back and abdominal muscles.
I use the Prime Time DVD too and I love it. It really makes me feel as if I've done something and my knee feels better too.
Thanks. I have just ordered it on amazon.
Mine is definitely osteo. Probably due to the fact I have hyper mobile joints and when I was young you were made to do the opposite of what is recommended today, since the syndrome and it's consequences have been recognised.
jeni, There is a Jane Fonda DVD called Prime Time! All the exercises are done sitting down. I think I read about it on this site somewhere..?
Also today on radio four , talking about Raynaud's disease, it was mentioned that garlic and gingko biloba are very helpful for people who suffer with arthritis.
This is Rheumatoid Arthritis, not Osteo.
My dad used to say that the best exercise for one's waistline was to push oneself firmly away from the table and say 'no' loudly. But then he was the only thin member of the family.
Help! I'm arthritic, on crutches ( with fairy lights on special occasions) .
My shoulder and wrists are also arthritic. I have artificial hips, a rice crispy neck and am overweight.
How do I exercise?
Any suggestions gratefully received!
Very impressed with all the fitness stories and ideas, my exercise takes the form of walking (tried getting on my bike for the 1st time in 10 years and it promptly keeled over and deposited me on the grass - most ungainly - given up on that for now).
I've had dogs all my life up until a couple of years ago, so no excuse not to get out there and tramp for miles. Now, tho' still make a point of walking 2-3 miles a day if I possibly can. Fortunately where I live in Northumberland it is very hilly, so plenty of exertion!
Currently I'm staying with my daughter in New Zealand and it's great to walk here amongst different flora and fauna and of course there are plenty of inclines to struggle up!
Don't really need to lose much weight, ideally 7lbs but I'm not classed as overweight, but I know that as I am increasingly arthritic I must keep moving!
Granb, could you just go blue to the extent of telling me how old you are. Because that is amazing! 5 miles walking, and then the same on your bike!
Please make me feel better by saying you are forty.
(you don't really have to say how old you are
)
I recommend walking with poles to get rid of bingo wings - I have discernible biceps for the first time in my life after 18 months of Alpine walking.
I am a bit restricted at the moment as most of the little lanes I normally walk are waist-deep in snow, but I am still managing an hour a day. Sun is shining today, lovely blue sky, so I am off to walk to the next village.
I have put three pounds on in the last few weeks - same meals, but obviously I have reached that stage in weight loss where the body thinks famine is imminent, coupled with the reduced walking. I am not going to eat less, as my daily calorie intake is less than 2,000.
My target weight was 10 stone 7 lbs (from a maximum of 11 st 12 lbs) and when I was in NZ it dropped to just below 10 stone, so I am quite happy with gaining a couple of pounds. At least my daughter will stop worrying that I am anorexic!
Walking the dog to the next village each day; 45 minute walk. Used to do it all the time but then there didn't seem to be enough hours in a day to fit it in. Had my b/p checked the other day, and it's fine, but pointed out to the Dr that I didn't get any aerobic exercise these days and we agreed it was important to do so [fast walking being the best thing to do]. Also stared a small exercise regime each day; again something I used to do. I have to admit, however, to finding far too much time to be on the computer each day, and time just flies when I do so! Today will be crunch time with the walk, as it's raining!
Morning all.
Have just found this thread and as have joined the weekly weigh-in.....!
Today plan to do an easy five mile road walk and then do the same route on bike. Not going to time it or anything....aim is just to finish both some time before it gets dark
Hi everyone, just the thread I need.
This is my second week on my new fitness regime. i've always been fairly active but a series of unfortunate events three years ago left me carb craving and my weight rose.
I'm pleased because I've managed to keep it up so far and I'm actually enjoying it. We have some home gym equipment so i have been using the exercise bike, a sit up bench (think that's what it is called, though torture bench may be a more suitable name) and a rowing machine. I am very gradually increasing my work levels as i don't want to come down with tendonitis which used to stalk me in my forties. Or drop down dead with a heart attack.
I also have two rest days a week so my muscles can recover from what I've been doing to them.
I'm doing a combination of cardio and strength building exercise. I also walk the indefatigable dog for miles every day in the forest. Been doing that for the last nearly two years (young dog) and I think it is the only thing that kept me sane during the series of unfortunate events.
We also have a large unruly garden which needs much work on it so that helps too.
I think, from my own experience that in order to keep to any fitness plan you need to 'have your head in the right place'. Do you know what I mean? Its a psychological thing that has to be in place before I can stick to the exercise and healthy eating. How to get your thinking there is another matter however.
Hope I'm not sounding like an idiot here, but that is my experience.
I try to alternate my strokes in the pool, doing mostly breast stroke but also backstroke and the occasional lap of crawl which I find the most difficult.. be glad to join with you.. boogying to the radio sounds ideal.. trust me I'm the first one to say oh its a bit windy/rainy maybe I shouldn't walk today..
yes please Tanith, would be good to have some company, arm weights is something I could do - albeit just the one arm at moment. I am going to throw out any last sweeties, and just try moving a bit more every hour. I could even have a little boogie to radio, as long as no one there to see me - and will also try and walk up stairs more.
Sounds like you are quite active already, I want to swim as soon as I'm allowed, tho' I only do breast stroke.
Enjoy your swim tomorrow.
I'd like to join in too.. I do usually walk quite a bit and swim once or twice a week , I have high BP which is medicated and I could do with losing a bit of weight just find it so hard to stop picking in the evenings.. I have some hand weights by my chair and do a few sets of arm excercises each evening while I watch Eastenders.
Today I've walked for 45 mins which is about my limit as I have Osteo-Arthritis and a hip-replacement if I try to do more I'll pay for it.
Tomorrow will try to get to the pool which is a 20 min walk so it would be good if I could do both the hours swim and the walk there and back..
Sunflower maybe we could change our ways together
