I thought it might help motivate us all to do more in the way of exercise if we keep a running thread as a fitness log. We can use it to record any fitness activity we do, and encourage/applaud each others' efforts.

Any and all levels of fitness welcome - as are recommendations of good forms of exercise to take up.

I have high blood pressure, so I need to do more exercise and lose some weight (quite urgently).

Today I leapt out of bed - OK, I heaved myself out of bed - grin, got to the gym, did 30 minutes on the exercise bike and 30 minutes in the outdoor pool. The sun was shining, and, honestly, it was glorious. Not to mention how pleased I was with myself. smile

Hello, please can I join you? This may be just the incentive I need. I have only just joined GN, as I broke my wrist very badly 5 weeks ago, and so cannot get out unless someone takes me - we live in the sticks, and I've been getting rather stir crazy and lonely- and comfort eating.

I am 61, quite overweight and need to lose weight for health reasons, high blood pressure, dodgy knees.

Due to my wrist I can't do too much, but thought I'd dust off the Wi fit and do the step - carefully. I am still in plaster with plate and pins, and hand swells up painfully if I do anything much. Very frustrating.

I will also do a short brisk walk each day, and wondered about trying the resistance bands that jingle mentioned - has anyone else tried them? They were mentioned on Loraine Kelly this week. I will have a look at the diet thread too, as I really need to change my ways.

Any other ideas gratefully received, thanks.

Oh there is a cheaper one. Perhaps for Xmas....

jinglej Mon 10-Oct-11 12:13:30

Oh that looks good shy www.amazon.co.uk/Trx-Suspension-Trainer-Pro-Pack/dp/B002YIA6SM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1318244772&sr=8-2
But I would probably hurt myself. Not to mention the price! shock

We had a really difficult stile yesterday shysal. Took me ages to work out a safe way to get over. And then, once over .... we noticed someone had put another, simpler one in a few feet along. hmm

I belong to the Oxford Fieldpaths Society. They have at least two organised walks each week. We are lucky to have beautiful countryside in this area including the Cotswolds, Chilterns and rivers. I enjoy the leisurely pace, but being an ageing group it can take a while to negotiate difficult stiles!

Before I injured my shoulder (tripped over a fallen tree) I bought the fitness product voted best by the Gadget Show on Channel 5. It is the TRX Suspension Trainer, which fits to any door and packs away into a bag about 9 inches square. They are not cheap, but I got quite fit and strong using it - sweated buckets. The included DVD was helpful.

We did a very long walk yesterday in beautiful Oxfordshire countryside. It was very enjoyable at the time, especially the pub lunch and the afternoon tea.

I feel totally knackered this morning.

The National Trust cows were lovely. (where do the National Trust find such different looking cows?)

Butternut Sun 09-Oct-11 18:56:12

Well done, Grannylin and everyone who gets out there.......!
I can't run - but walk - and we have the same companionship; we walk, discuss news, gossip (gently), learn to expand our interests, bless the countryside and sky, and generally embrace our good fortune.
Not only does walking embrace the enjoyment of the countryside, but brings together a sense of belonging . :-)

My exercise bike is good. Gets my pulse rate up. You need to have something watchable on tv though, or an audio book, while you are doing it.

I mentioned to my GP that I was getting breathless and he suggested I use the ergonometer ( exercise bike) that he knows we possess because DH told him

Instructions:
Just get on for 2 minutes, rest 1 minute, and then 2 minutes. Every other day add another minute on and listen to radio to prevent boredom.
Then cut out the break and keep adding one minute and then cut back to 3 x a week and after you reach 20 minutes then 2x a week is enough for the heart. That was 6 months ago and I exercise 2x a week and am no longer breathless walking in this very hilly town where I live.
I don't have to get wet swimming or wear running shoes for running and it is good for painful knees as they get lubricated without bearing weight.

jinglej Sun 09-Oct-11 12:27:49

Well, you would crimson. My son did that for a while. Came back sweating buckets. hmm

When I read 'spinning' I thought of whirling dervishes......

MDougall Sun 09-Oct-11 11:53:34

I have been "spinning" 3 times per week now for the last 5 years (give or take a few days off for colds etc!!). Most gyms have classes so give it a try.It is a great fat burner - non impact - and fun to do - you will probably be one of the oldest in the class (I am by 20 years!) but it is great for raising the heartbeat.

I also play golf 2/3 times per week and agree that it is great for the walking and the competitiveness, plus the benefit of being out of doors with friends.

My 87 year old Mum has oestoporosis and has shrunk by 6 inches in the last ten years so I am motivated to keep going on the walking and keeping fit so that I do not "shrink" as well. I am 5ft 3inches tall so cannot afford to shrink by too much!!!!!

jinglej Sun 09-Oct-11 11:51:09

OR, you could bowl that one round the garden Glam. That would keep you fit.

So long as you're not overlooked.

Grannylin Sun 09-Oct-11 11:49:48

Just done a cross country 5 mile run, started in the rain and finished in warm sunshine. Can't believe I do this every Sunday morning. I joined the Women's Running Network 3 years ago never having run in my life and now I can manage this! Its unfortunately gone bust now but we still kept the running group going, made up of women between ages of 50-62(me!).We walk, run, gossip and just admire the wonderful area we live in but best of all its a real stress-buster.My kids can't believe it!!!

glammanana Sun 09-Oct-11 11:31:13

Never thought of that janglej the one I've got has got tiny beads inside so it make's a stupid noise when it is supposed to be going around, will go to TRU or Entertainer and get light weight one. thanks

jogginggirl Sun 09-Oct-11 11:27:03

Good luck with that glammanana wink

jinglej Sun 09-Oct-11 11:25:34

My daughter bought a hula hoop. They make them much heavier these days! I can't get it to stay up.

Go to Toy 'r' us Glam and get an ordinary hoop.

glammanana Sun 09-Oct-11 11:23:31

I think I will have to get my hula-hoop out from under the bed and try and get it to stay at waist height.hmm

jogginggirl Sun 09-Oct-11 11:02:00

Good for you Carol - just back from my run and it has done me a power of good. As Butternut says, exercise is marvellous for the body and soul smile

jinglej Sun 09-Oct-11 11:01:08

I have just bought one of these. www.amazon.co.uk/Dyna-Band-Unisex-Green-1-2-m/dp/B005D6FTIO/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1318154035&sr=8-7

I am going to be very strong.

Its a bit difficult to remember what to do when doing it from the book but DD demonstrated it last night, and I'm getting there.

Carol Sun 09-Oct-11 10:22:34

Grandchildren, a lively basset hound, housework and gardening don't do enough to keep me fit and I have some pounds I am trying to lose, so this thread is definitely motivational for me. I am going to get up right now and do a few minutes of exercise that I wouldn't otherwise have done smile

Butternut Sun 09-Oct-11 10:06:21

I try to walk three times a week with a group. We step it out and average 6 - 8 kms each morning . Sometimes we get lost, which makes it longer!
In the summer I swim as well, which I love, but it's not available here in the winter.
I also count gardening - deeply into raking leaves at the moment - and housework, as exercise!
I find exercise marvellous for body and soul and make it a priority in my life.
Count me in on the fitness log. Great idea Alchemillamollis! :-))

jogginggirl Sun 09-Oct-11 09:08:32

This exercise lark is becoming less attractive as the weather deteriorates. Off for a quick run before the rain comes again..............smile
