GrandmaAnge - that's very impressive!! So glad to hear that the replacement body bits are performing well and don't stop your activities.

And of course, what I don't think anyone has mentioned...........we all spend a lot of time chasing around after those pesky little g/c smile

GoldenGran - not hard core just conscious of not becoming an overweight/unfit burden my kids or anyone else wink

I've been a keen badminton fan since my 20s and still play competitively in local leagues a couple of times a week as well as for my county's veterans' side in my age-group (over 60s) against other counties around the country.
Through this I've met many like-minded players in my age-group who keep themselves fit and active.
I've had both hips replaced and my right knee and, apart from avoiding industrial magnets and sparking a security symphony at the airport, find that these medical wonders basically do what they advertise.

Just come back from four hours of golf which is quite knackering despite what you might think but IT IS good for your arms and legs. The mental challenge is very good for you. Just ahead of me was a party of four 80+ year old ladies who now only play 9 a few times a week and 2 of them who have had heart problems have a buggy but they're still out there!

wow jogging girl you are hard core, well done. I did my daily(in the week, not weekends) swim this morning, and will go to Pilates as well tomorrow. But off on holiday at the weekend so will have to do lots of walking then.

We have turned our garage into a gym equipped with mats, exercise balls, treadmill and rowing machine. It's great for rainy days and dark nights. Otherwise, on good weather days I try to jog outdoors 3xweek about 5k each time. I walk quite a lot, have a pt once a fortnight and pilates class once a week...............I am going to make enquiries at my local pool and probably start swimming 1xweek. I'm hoping it all cancels out the winewinein the evening smile

ellie50 Mon 26-Sept-11 13:13:00

here's another exercise to do, pilates. not very energetic but so good for anyone who gets a bit stiff!
i've been trying it for a couple of weeks now and at first found it a bit boring but once you get into the stretches and breathing it really is good. improves flexibility and posture, don't want to end up with a hump!
i do an hours class twice a week and have certainly loosened up.

Did anyone see the edition of Dragons Den with a couple who wanted an investment to promote their company which made a garment that you wore under a short sleeved dress to cover up bingo wings. Their website is:
www.wingzfashion.com/shop.php?action=index

alchemillamollis Mon 26-Sept-11 12:26:54

Yes, Annobel, but I have been doing that all my life, and I'm fed up with it. I want to rise from the shame and bare my arms. Their time has come.

Annobel Mon 26-Sept-11 11:40:08

Only one solution for bingo wings, alche, conceal them. But getting dresses/tops with suitable sleeves is another matter. I have written to M&S about their dresses, particularly summer ones, but they evidently don't think older women like to wear pretty dresses. And I thought we were their main customer group. I have bought several polo shirts with elbow length sleeves from Lands End, but don't want to spend every summer in polo shirts.

alchemillamollis Mon 26-Sept-11 11:10:15

Oh, my upper arms are a real problem. Always have been - at least at my age, everyone has got bingo wings, not just me. Hadn't thought of golf as a solution.

We have a dog which can't be walked by me. Becuase he is Impossible. Dh does that; at least it keeps him fit.

susiecb Mon 26-Sept-11 09:30:37

Off to golf again today howver funny that may be its a four mile walk at least, you have to concentrate so good for the brain, its out in the fresh air with friends and my upper arms are nicely toned!

riclorian Sun 25-Sept-11 19:41:09

I recomend owning a dog --- that way you have to walk regularly . I feel (apart from swimming ) that walking is the best excercise. I don't agree with all the road running - it must bad for the knee joints . Could it be that many of the joint replacements are the result of too much pavement pounding ?

alchemillamollis Sun 25-Sept-11 12:40:25

Golf - that's a good one. smile

I know what you mean about stiffness. Dh and I have started to get random achy bits which we're not used to.

susiecb Sun 25-Sept-11 09:36:57

Played 18 holes and 9 holes of golf this week total 5.5. hours and on the other days did an hours walking. Why is it my stiffness never gets any better?

alchemillamollis Sun 25-Sept-11 08:57:00

Housework is, I'm afraid, my least favourite form of exercise. But if you saw my house, you would know that.

Mamie Sun 25-Sept-11 08:36:00

We live deep in the French countryside and I do the following: housework, lots of gardening (we have quite a big property to manage), keep fit class once a week, walk with the village ladies once a week (5-10km).The big frustration here is swimming; the local swimming pool is only open between 12 and 1.30 in term time, apart from that it is kept for the schools, even though it is a huge pool with a leisure pool as well.

alchemillamollis Sat 24-Sept-11 23:32:02

Don't you think food tastes better when you're starving hungry from exercise, though? Worth it for that, IMO.

8 miles! That's good. The fresh air is good, too; I was reminding myself of that in the outdoor pool. That can get windy, which is a pain with wet hair.

GrannyTunnocks Sat 24-Sept-11 22:55:42

Today I walk 8 miles with the Ramblers. Lovely weather but a bit windy. However I am always starving when I get home so probably undid all the good work!

glammanana Sat 24-Sept-11 22:55:20

Can't wait until Monday,I used to swim every day when we lived abroad, did 15/16 lengths every siesta and it kept me trim and fit but must confess to being lazy when we came back to UK,I think once you get back into it you tend to look forward to the buzz that you get,and at the moment all the children have gone back to school so the bath's are empty during the day.(not that I dislike the children but like to swim the lengths without interuption)

alchemillamollis Sat 24-Sept-11 22:48:26

Great, Glammanana. Swimming is such a great form of exercise. I was thinking today that I'm so grateful to my parents for teaching me to swim, and to love to swim. smile

glammanana Sat 24-Sept-11 22:21:58

On Monday morning I am back swimming and can rejoin the gym,ok now after op and doctor said fine for excerise so off we go,I am only going to go twice a week to start but will increase slowly.so count me in on the excercise thread.smile

alchemillamollis Sat 24-Sept-11 21:44:16

I've seen it, but not yet been on it. I will, though - thanks!

I think I was given the WiiFit once for Christmas. The rest of the family loved it...me, not so much. grin

Walking is not so good for me because I prefer to amble. Don't ask me why. I can do power walking, but then I feel as if I might as well jog. Ambling is my natural mode, and you can look at the gardens you amble past.

yogagran Sat 24-Sept-11 21:33:06

By the way - have you discovered the "dieting" thread which is renewed each week?

yogagran Sat 24-Sept-11 21:32:26

I'm most impressed alchemillamollis. I find the gym rather tedious but always feel so good after I've done it. Don't often get down there at the moment, I try to justify not using it by walking a lot.
I've also got a Wii Fit which is fun but again the lack of self-discipline shows. Always saying "I'll do it tomorrow when I've got more time"
So a thread to encourage us lazy ones is most welcome

alchemillamollis Sat 24-Sept-11 20:08:31

I thought it might help motivate us all to do more in the way of exercise if we keep a running thread as a fitness log. We can use it to record any fitness activity we do, and encourage/applaud each others' efforts.

Any and all levels of fitness welcome - as are recommendations of good forms of exercise to take up.

I have high blood pressure, so I need to do more exercise and lose some weight (quite urgently).

Today I leapt out of bed - OK, I heaved myself out of bed - grin, got to the gym, did 30 minutes on the exercise bike and 30 minutes in the outdoor pool. The sun was shining, and, honestly, it was glorious. Not to mention how pleased I was with myself. smile
