University Project-Exercise, need YOUR help!!

Ellie, hope you are enjoying your time in Falmouth. I live outside Penryn, and we can see the uni buildings from the garden. Quite enough rain this year, but I shall complete your survey and hope you find it helpful.

I am afraid I could not complete the survey as it did not give enough alternatives. I live in a remote area of the Alps and walk many miles up steep paths, sometimes climbing over rocks, every week. So, no local park. However, there is an exercise trail in a forest near the village, with climbing bars and jogging tracks. I confess to having a go at balancing on the beam which is about 12" above the ground, when nobody is around. I am 72 and very fit and active, but I have no idea how my walking would fit into any schedule produced by the government.

Tbh, it does sound great fun!

There is a park near my son which has exercise equipment. I've tried it and it's great fun - but as there are no loos nearby I can stay for any length of time which is a pity. The Germans are very keen on this sort of thing and call it 'Trimm dich'!

'Elderly' is one of those terms that are not considered 'polite' in business circles these days. The current term is 'older people'

Question 8 needs a "Both" answer too.

I walk about 50 minutes a day, commuting to and from work!! More than enough for me. And as another GNetter said, when the grandchildren come to visit - exhaustion sets in from chasing them around.

I don't remember any special advice being put out for the over fifties tbh. Thought it was the same as everyone else - 30 minutes brisk walking two or three times a week. Or can be broken up into 3 x 10 minute goes.

I seem to remember the survey was for the 50 - 70 year olds, so I was really a year too old. I filled it in anyway. Seems a young cut-off point!

Am I let off using the grownup play stuff in parks?

Btw some local councils charge for group activities, such as Tai Chi, with a leader/coach if they take place in the park. The fee is payable by the leader/coach for use of the public space. Seems a bit left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

What is the recommended amount of exercise for the over 50s? Also over 50s – nearly 40 years with current life expectancy – is a very large age range.

They have got an adult outdoor gym near the beach in Hayling Island. I see it every couple of weeks when I visit an aunt in a care home there. In the four years I have been doing the run I have never seen anyone using it, not even teenagers.

I avoid all Sport and Exercise of the kind measured and approved by Government and Medical authorities but I love walking ln town and country looking at the landscape around me, whether urban or rural. I love my garden and grow most of my own vegetables. I cannot wait for the leaves to complete falling so that on a bright cold winter day I can spend three or four hours raking them up, that mixture of smell and texture and exhilaration. I also love the pleasure that swimming in a pool gives me or in the sea, if the water is warm enough. My activities are all about pleasure of mind and body, the feel of water, weather and warmth.

But as for that lemming like pleasureless activity that government and doctors would force upon us, no thanks.

The grandchildren give me all the exercise I can handle.
By the time I've wrestled the baby into her nappy, tights and boots, hoisted the double buggy out of the car, lifted two toddlers into it, pushed it up the very steep hill, dragged it up steps, chased them around the soft play centre, slid down the slide and climbed back up again, stretched under furniture to retrieve toys, lifted baby in and out of supermarket trollies and car sears, fought with swords and light sabres, and so on, I've probably exercised and stretched every muscle group and raised my heart beat to danger levels.

Done, ellie but I agree with some of the comments - I live in a village so calling an area of open space a "park" doesn't really fit. Walking the dog doesn't seem to quite fit into your categories either, but I suppose this highlights the difference betwee younger people who do like their exercise to be more organised - gym, running etc and old dears like me who feel if I can totter along I am quite happy
