I know exactly where our "left-overs" are going. And it aint in the flippin' bin!!!! shock

You're all mad! hmm

Ah! dogs! of course! That would explain it. smile

Nanado Sun 30-Dec-12 17:47:54

Yes I feed them mealyworms, so any left over worms from Christmas dinner crimson!! grin
What I'd feed my own chucks is not what I'd recommend though for your neighbours. Besides I have two dogs who claim all fish and meat products first!

We used to feed our hens meat leftovers. They loved it! Bacon rinds, pork fat, raw pastry, scraps off the roast. Chickens are omnivores like us. The only thing we didn't give them was chicken, but they would have eaten that too if we had, and happily. They loved mealworms too.

Take extra chocolates to your local hospice, animal shelter (for the volunteers) or Samaritans, etc.

So long as its not slimey lettuce it doesn't matter about sell by dates crimson and all fruit (raw or cooked).

crimson Sun 30-Dec-12 17:13:33

are they ok with the lettuce that's over it's used by date? I'm always throwing that away. tanith; I've got the hugest box of Thorntons downstairs that someone bought as a thank you. I darent open it. I so wish I could just eat a couple of chocolates and then put the box away sad. It could stay in the living room for weeks or months and I wouldn't dream of eating any, but, once it's open that's it.....

tanith Sun 30-Dec-12 17:03:28

My lovely grandson bought us a hamper containing , all sorts of puddings and biscuit treats including a box of mince pies and two christmas puddings., the kids thankfully dessimated the chocolates so there are only a few left but I have a box of Thorntons and a box of real Turkish delight sitting on the side calling me, I threw away various things from the fridge I'd bought 'in case' people called in , money down the drain there.. we bought beer and wine for the family (we don't drink) just one bottle of wine went the rest is now in the garage awaiting a Summer BBQ. We don't learn either..

crimson anything that has no meat or fish in it. Cakes, mince pies, salad stuff, boiled veggies, (they prefer their veggies cooked!), bread, pastry, boiled pasta, biscuits, etc. or you can parcel it up and post it to me!!!!

In the cupboard in the hall way (out of sight) but calling my name are still two tins of choc's bought when 2 for £8.00 must get them in case they go up in price again moment !! one tin of famous make choc biscuits 4 x selection boxes in case any extra little ones turned up (but didn't) so think maybe will have to donate to school when they go back next week can't even think of opening the cupboard door temptation is to great at the moment.Things worked out well with the food stuffs not too much waste put what was left of turkey crown and pork into containers and DD has her meat for the next two week-ends sorted.

Barrow Sun 30-Dec-12 15:26:13

The uneaten half of the turkey crown is already in the freezer - I will probably be able to face it again in a few weeks time! No Christmas cake or pudding as I don't like it but there are 4 mince pies calling me!

I have mostly nuts and chocolates left over (chocs mostly from friends as Christmas presents). I have one friend who I couldn't get to meet up with before Christmas so we are meeting early in the New Year and I have a horrible feeling it will be booze and chocs from her too!

crimson Sun 30-Dec-12 15:22:47

Nanado; just realised you can advise me on what's ok to throw over the fence to my neighbours 'The Bantams'. I suppose [uncooked] fruit and veg is ok along with stale bread?

granjura Sun 30-Dec-12 15:13:06

I hate waste too- but agree that forcing oneself to eat left-overs is no good to anybody and won't feed the needy. So I'd always try to cook left-overs and freeze for later. Just 2 small slices of Christmas cake left - then it will be all over smile here.

Marelli Sun 30-Dec-12 15:00:35

nanapug, you are not alone blush. I have waded happily through half of a large Christmas cake and approximately 20 mince pies. I must have eaten all this myself because DH likes neither and only my daughter likes Christmas cake and she was only here for about half-an-hour on Christmas day confused. Due to DH also not liking chocolate liqueurs I ate 5 of them last night and over 2 nights just after Christmas Day another 18 Famous Names ones blush and shame emoticon. I have now decided to freeze 4 remaining mince pies and wrap the Christmas cake in foil and take it up to my daughter's at the earliest opportunity.....hmm I feel better already.....and not quite as beefy grin!

Nanado Sun 30-Dec-12 14:53:00

My chucks are VERY happy. It's better in them than on my hips too and I need to get some eggs off them. I have 7 at the moment and only one laying but I digress....... hmm

nanapug Sun 30-Dec-12 14:43:27

Oh, it is good to hear someone else saying it's better in the bin than on your hips. That is what I feel, but my mother haunts me if I throw stuff away, having lived through a war she couldn't cope with waste and it makes me feel as if she is watching me every time I chuck something!!

Barrow Sun 30-Dec-12 14:37:59

I think it is something we all do. I also have lots left over but have decided anything left the day after New Years Day is going in the bin (wasteful I know but better there than on my hips!)

nanapug Sun 30-Dec-12 14:30:21

I know that every year, the moment Christmas is over, I want to look at my dietary habits and start eating better for the new year (I am loathe to use the word "diet" as I have done that too often, and now just try to eat healthily). As always though I have enough cheese, chocolate, mince pies, bake your own bread and nibbles left over to feed the street. I forget every year that we don't want that sort of thing over the actual Christmas but get them "just in case". The excess fruit and veg is not a problem. My children always say I never knowingly under cater!! Each year I say I will not do it again but........
