I went to a class once and could hardly walk afterwards. That was how I discovered my arthritic hip. hmm

We had tai chi classes in our local bannatynes(ipad wanted to say banana tunes) but I found my balance was rubbish and remembering the chain of movements. It was ok if I stood directly in front of the tutor ..

Tai Chi, have to say that I have only seen this kind of activity in Chinese Kong Hu movie, however there is less classes for Tai Chi in the area... Guess mountaineering can have the similar works if much attention paid to the security issue.

I joined a Tai Chi class 10 years ago. The tutor was Chinese and a master of the art. After class was over he cooked for us, mostly Chinese dishes which were delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed every class and felt very sleepy but not tired afterwards I suppose that meant I was relaxed.

Unfortunately because of other commitments he gave up teaching. Although I have often thought of joining another class I don't think I would ever find another tutor as dedicated.

Don't tell Frank!

I joined a Tai Chi class in Dartmouth, way back in the early eighties. The tutor was one of the first to learn the art, from a Master, in China. I loved it. We sometimes gave demonstrations. It is almost like a ballet in slow-motion. smile

I started T'ai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung last September through U3A and am finding it really enjoyable. The class involves individual exercises and sequences so you don't always have to remember what movement comes next!
I've found myself much more relaxed and less stressed since starting and the quietness of the class is in sharp contrast to exercise classes at the gym!
The fact that the teacher is patient and experienced probably helps too!
And by the way, it's not as easy as it looks!

Ariadne...I've included a link to the Tai Chi page of my local martial arts group.
Since starting Tai Chi, my arthritic knees have been considerably less painful. Carpal tunnel in both hands/wrists much better. Maybe the biggest benefit is the feeling of 'wellbeing'. It's difficult to describe and I promise you, I'm a very down to earth and practical person, but after a session of Tai Chi I just feel 'good' inside.
I'd recommend it to anyone. smile

Thanks jura - I'll chase it up.

BTW, I'd never ever correct someone's spelling, especially as I am a 'furiner' - however, if Googling make sure you use 'Tai Chi'.

In my nearby French town there is no Tai-chi classes, but many Gi Gung - which follows the same principles. Tai-chi teaching is based on learning a 'form' or a series of exercises, which can be very taxing for me memory. Gi Gung is based more on individual exercises or much shorter 'forms' or series. So ask at your Commune is they have Gi-Gung Classes, just as good and perhaps even better.

I have searched high and low for some classes, as I'd love to explore Tia Chi - but sadly there's not a class within 50kms of where I live. Don't think the French are into it somehow.
Still, I do have the Zumba - which is the other end of the 'feel good' spectrum. smile

Definitely interested in this. Tell me more? Please.

I've been going to Tai Chi classes for a year now, twice a week for the past 9 months. Not only is it physically beneficial, but it's wonderfully calming and uplifting. Mind, body & spirit. smile

Tai Chi and Gi Gung are indeed wonderful for you, all ages, and so much easier to adapt to any weakness/handicap than yoga. I'd highly recommend.
