Diabetes and 5:2 diet

I've mentioned before on this forum a friend who had a gastric band fitted, lost 10 stone and whose type 2 diabetes was reversed. She could eat so little that it was similar to the study mentioned above. Five years on she's still diabetes free, just waiting on an operation to remove surplus skin.

Thanks, Jane. I agree that it should not be tried at home. I like the way they give recipes and menus so you can vary the way you eat your 250g. of veg daily.

jen some early results have been published already, www.ncl.ac.uk/press.office/press.release/item/diet-reverses-type-2-diabetes, although the study is continuing.
It's definitely in the 'don't try this at home' category, though.

My mother was type 2 diabetic, and she probably did the 5:2 diet without knowing it. The problem was that my husband was type 1. We'd go for a meal and sometimes there would be lots of carbohydrate, the next time there would be none.
I think diabetesuk would frown on the 5:2 diet. Carbohydrates need to be balanced every day/mealtime so you do not have an overload or have less carbohydrate than you need.
The best diet to look at is the GI, or glycaemic index/load. It was developed for diabetics, but you would not know that now.

There is interesting research being done at Newcastle about going on a very low calorie diet to get rid of type 2 diabetes, but they reckon it will take 5 years for the research to have results. Your friend can ask her GP about it.

Has anybody any information about type2 diabetics (diet controlled) being able to do the 5:2 diet? I have a friend who is newly diagnosed and wonders if it is possible for her. Any info would be appreciated.

Didn't know whether to put this under health or dieting!
