Pre-Diabetes and exercise!!!!

forgot to say before my diagnosis I went to the gym twice a week and I am in a walking group and walk twice a week so the fact I was active made no difference.
The change came when I altered my diet.

Anyhow he sent me to see a nutritionist and I was put on a diet and given advice and suggestions for meals, the good news is I am now normal blood sugar and my cholesterol is down to 4.3.

The not so good news is I have lost one and a half stone which I didn't need to loose. I had a problem at first regulating my weight from going below 9 stone but it was suggested I eat more nuts and that's solved the problem.

My understanding is you can turn things around if you are pre diabetic but once you become diabetic you can never go back to normal blood sugar with diet alone.

18 months ago after my yearly blood test I was given the pre diabetic and high cholesterol diagnosis, to say I was shocked was an understatement. I already have high blood pressure which I'm on medication for and it keeps it under control.

I asked doc if there was anything I could do diet wise to prevent type 2 which he said he didn't think I could avoid.

Jane mentioned this research on the diabetes and 5:2 diet. Is there a difference between Slimfast and the electrolite drinks that you get on the NHS? We both said we would not do it at home.

I read this research too and though I don't have this problem Mr Aka does. It seems to be part of a cluster of health-related problems that include high BP, raised cholesterol, insulin resistance and TIAs.
Perhaps it might be wise to take a multivitamin while you are on such a restricted diet, but I do with you every success.

Good luck Flower. Two of my loved ones developed late onset, type 2 diabetes. Both got their levels back into the normal range with a combination of weight loss and exercise. I walk, walk and walk some more, as a number of my close family members developed type 2, and so far, so good.

Just looked at it - don't think I could stick to it, but you never know until you try! The Optifast shakes would be very boring. Good luck GA. Look forward to your updates.

I'm going to go on the very low calorie diet and see what (if any) difference it makes. I'm not looking forward to doing without tea, but I reckon that for eight weeks I can do this - just. Will give you occasional updates on my progress if you're interested. I haven't been on an actual low calorie diet for years, usually I only have to say the word and I crave chocolate, so I usually talk about 'healthy eating'.

After having read Pre-Diabetes for Dummies I have promised myself that come rain or come shine (some hope) I will go for a strenuous walk each morning. Exercise is the main combatant - apparently - against Diabetes Type 11. Also I must lose the tummy fat as this is bad for the thing progressing. shock
