Hi all, I have a wedding and a holiday in September and I would really like to get in better shape - I was wondering if anyone has somehow managed to give up refined sugar and if so what were the effects?! Thank you grin

granjura Mon 13-Jul-15 21:38:17

Thanks, ooops I skimmed recipe and missed the eggs- doh. What a shame.

Ana Mon 13-Jul-15 21:32:36

Oh yes, two eggs!

Ana Mon 13-Jul-15 21:30:50

Thanks for your reply, jingl smile

I don't think we need to worry about a couple of posts about your virus hijacking the thread!

Courgette fans are possibly doing so though...

merlotgran Mon 13-Jul-15 21:30:41

Very easy, using the large holes on a cheese grater, jingl

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 13-Jul-15 21:28:34

That does look very nice. Might try that tomorrow. If Waitrose has got courgettes. (Never looked for them before)

Wonder if courgettes are easy to shred.

gj it has got eggs in it.

annodomini Mon 13-Jul-15 21:28:18

I'm pretty sure that I put a courgette cake recipe on our recipe section years ago. The courgettes make a nice moist texture.

granjura Mon 13-Jul-15 21:12:50

Thanks, that is great. And even 1000s better, no egg cake, so will be great to try on GS who is higly allergic to eggs. Hurrah- merci.

While I like courgettes I must say I too was tentative. But you would never know if you hadn't been told and it is SO good. Not too sweet. And contrary to popular opinion I'm not a huge cake eater. Baker yes, but my vices are mainly chocolate. Or Ice cream. Or cheese and onion crisps.

Recipe Merlot? Thanks- sounds great.

merlotgran Mon 13-Jul-15 20:53:24

Lime and courgette drizzle cake is divine smile

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 13-Jul-15 20:48:43

No. Sorry. I don't know why anyone would put courgettes in a cake. They are horrible enough as a veg. Why spoil a good cake? hmm

Put the recipe up Cari please. #tryanythingonce

granjura Mon 13-Jul-15 20:46:12

Have you got the recipe Cari- that sounds good ;)

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 13-Jul-15 20:41:54

Actually we did have cake at GNHQ today - but VERY healthy cake made by LucyGransnet. Full of dark chocolate (healthy) and courgettes (healthy) so I had five slices to make up my five a day*

* just kidding. Only two slices. Quite large ones though

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 13-Jul-15 20:37:01

I'm not sure we should hijack this thread! But never mind. grin

When the virus started I got a horrible bitter taste in my mouth and my tongue went white. Sorry if tmi. Doc said that was due to acid, and put my Omeprazole up from 10 mgs to 20. He did all the bloods and they came back all good. So he now agrees it has all been caused by the virus. The extra Omep hasn't made a lot of difference, but he thinks it will settle down when I get my strength back. Then I can go back to 10 mgs. Who knows? hmm

Sorry for the hijack people. Blame Ana. grin

Ana Mon 13-Jul-15 20:01:55

Why did your dr tell you to up your dose of omeprazole though jingl?
(sorry, off subject I know but I've been curious every since you said...)

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 13-Jul-15 19:59:45

Yep. Gone now, thanks Bags. All better. smile

thatbags Mon 13-Jul-15 19:53:31

BTW, jings, I hope your virus has cleared up. I had one that lasted eleven weeks once. It didn't make me lose weight, which was probably a good thing.

thatbags Mon 13-Jul-15 19:51:59

I agree with that too, jings, and what's more I reckon I'm pretty good proof of that. I eat what the hell I like and am not overweight. Please note i did not say how much the hell I like, though actually, once you've trained your body not to want more than it needs, I guess you do eat as much as you want, you just don't want to eat too much. That's how it works for me anyhow.

DH, on the other hand, has followed all kinds of diets over the years, (except the one that just says eat less), to no avail.

granjura Mon 13-Jul-15 19:50:05

It is very useful to know which foods, like carbs, turn to sugar almost immediately as eaten, truly.

granjura Mon 13-Jul-15 19:48:58

weight loss is highly linked to sugar. A very interesting article from the Huffington Post, and Professor Lustig, Consultant Peadiatrician- do Google it. He explains the issues very well, here is the introduction:

Still believe a calorie is just a calorie?

If you do, you fly in the face of mounting and incontrovertible evidence that some calories -- in particular, "sugar calories" -- are jeopardizing both your and your family's health. Physicians and politicians who cling to the dogma that "all calories should be treated equally" imperil our country's health care system, food supply and standing in the world for the next hundred years.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 13-Jul-15 19:48:08

You do NOT need to know the GI of foods to diet successfully.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 13-Jul-15 19:43:56

Even the scientists can't agree about that stuff.

Just stick to taking in less fuel than you burn.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 13-Jul-15 19:42:39

Going a bit off-piste now. hmm

OP is about weight loss.

granjura Mon 13-Jul-15 19:40:14

Quote jingl 'Yes gj. "^in high doses^"' ...

and that is the very point. Young childrenb are growing up now with lots and lots of sugar- perhaps the majority of which 'hidden', in all sorts of savoury and foods which are labelled as 'healthy' like fruit drinks and yogurts, as well as 'traditional' sweet foods. Do you really think the NHS, doctors and the gvt (which makes tons of money on the back of sugar btw) - are backing a campaigna against excessive sugar unless there is a VERY good reason for doing so. Far from bla bla bla- truly. Of course calories are calories- but you truly need to do a bit of research about how carbs turn into sugar very quickly and add massively to the sugar intake indirectly. As well as understand the Glyceamic Index of foods- which is not directly related to calories as such.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 13-Jul-15 19:25:06

or whatever she's called. hmm
