Hi all, I have a wedding and a holiday in September and I would really like to get in better shape - I was wondering if anyone has somehow managed to give up refined sugar and if so what were the effects?! Thank you grin

yorkshire I wouldn't bother with a diet sheet. Do you want to lose weight too? If so, get yourself a fitbit or log onto MFP and start logging and counting.

Someone in my house at the moment, someone who actually knows everything there is to know in the whole wide world, tells me your brains runs entirely on sugar.

So glad. Went to Xmas Fair yesterday.

I think wheat is worse than sugar. I go through phases of not eating it at all and it makes such a difference to my appetite, those hunger pangs just disappear. It also cuts out loads of sugar as it rules out most cakes, biscuits, puddings etc. Just be careful not to fill up on rice or spuds instead. I do get bored though eventually and start longing for fresh crusty bread.

Is there a basic diet sheet for oldies anywhere? I want to lose weight I have gained since having my gall bladder out. I have cut out sugar I can control, ie cakes and biscuits etc also changed to sunflower oil, eat plenty of fruit and veg, cut out pork and fatty meat such as lamb, eat chicken breast only in small quantities also changed to brown bread. What else can I do? Any ideas? Am I doing anything I should not be doing?

Excellent book on the subject, finally reprinted I gather after years of sugar company lobbying not to, called 'Pure White and Deadly'. It puts you off eating sugar, read it everybody! Carol

Good grease. I'm probably really an eskimo though I've never, to my knowledge, eaten raw whale blubber. [stickyouttongue] @ jingl.

Newbies, don't worry. This is a long-running disagreement and is perfectly firendly smile

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 15-Jul-15 11:04:52

Unsalted butter is grease.

off piste, but I can't believe GCs have not yet broken up for hols! I used to love it when Leicester had the 'textile fortnight' = first 2 weeks in July. Much cheaper and we met lots of Scots wherever we went, and Swiss- who also break up at same time.

I've just eaten a marmalade sandwich, mainly for the homemade bread which is awesome. I also like butter (unsalted). And at the moment I'm adding a dollop of extra thick cream, as well as the usual full fat milk, to my breakfast cereal, along with a few strawberries. Yum.

Scottish schools broke up on 26 June, anya.

My husband went "carb" free in February, and he has lost about 2 and a half stone, I decided to follow suit in May and must say it is going terrifically well.

I no longer get dips and "highs" from the sugar, I am far less lethargic during the day, I sleep soooo much better, I had had a cough for quite some time and did some google research to see if there was a connection between the coughing and sugar and was surprised to see that there was. So, so much better all round I would say. I do not get hunger pangs, or cravings for anything, thought I would seriously miss bread/potatoes/pasta, but not one little tiny bit.

I would say go for it, nothing to lose, except some unwanted weight.

I am blessed in not having a very sweet tooth. I do like cake though but not butter cream icing or those heavy cream cakes.

A fruit cake appears to be a lot less sweet than a Victoria sponge but I doubt if it is.

Anya Tue 14-Jul-15 15:15:43

Blame those marmalade sandwiches.........

Don't wish to be personal but are you perhaps related to..........

Paddington?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 14-Jul-15 14:57:58

I like a good sugar rush. smile.

Anya Tue 14-Jul-15 14:55:33

Sorry to be pedantic but the whole point about sugar is that it *doesn't " sit in the stomach for long. It is absorbed very quickly into the blood stream causing sudden spikes in blood glucose levels.

Not good!

have some schools broken up already?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 14-Jul-15 14:50:14

Sorry. But it is.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 14-Jul-15 14:49:31

Rubbish!

hmm

Helmsley444 Tue 14-Jul-15 14:43:19

Sugar is the worst of all evils. It sits in the stomach rotting and fermenting. And yet is do difficult yo give uo .As it is 8 times more additive than cocaine.
