I am a 67 year old male who has had total hip replacement on both hips. I find now because of my inactivity I have developed a fat gut, which I would like to get rid of. So I was thinking of getting myself a cycle and doing a few miles a week. Is this a good idea? And is there anyone else with the same does the same?

I have a good friend who has had both her hips replaced and she's a very good cyclist (I think she was pretty good before the ops!). I think swimming is also good in this instance.

There is a form of Zumba which is done seated which is aimed at people who cannot stand or perhaps are recovering from surgery and then Zumba Gold for when you are fitter but its still low impact if you are looking for something else perhaps for when the weather is too bad for cycling. How about starting off your cycling career at the gym where you can get some advice on a building up your fitness and iuits nice and warm and dry.

I agree with Teetime go to the gym for starters for advice, bearing in mind that the rowing ,machine is too low for somebody with hip replacements. A lot depends on when you had your surgery and what type of THRs were inserted as to what you can do.

Some of the machines at my gym cater for people in wheelchairs as well so I'd assume that they'd be good for people with delicate hips, and a lot of them are for exercises the upper part of the body. Also, the walking machines, if you had them on slow but with a big incline, means that you could walk but with the reassurance of being able to hold on to something.

Just a thought....I have a suspect back and now a mild prolapse (women's problems).....have ventured into personal trainer territory as I felt was not getting my usual (walking) exercise. Have had two sessions so far and am really taking to it....its very personalised and having someone standing over me watching every move is really reassuring me that I will not do myself any damage.

I like to be fit and stay healthy.

HildaW may I ask how much that costs you each session? I need something like that because it is great thinking about doing something- another actually doing it. I have 100 excuses why I should not do something.
