Reducing sugar intake

I am shortly going to have a rethink about my diet and cut back pretty drastically on sugar. I eat sensibly already and am only slightly overweight but realise there are many hidden sugars in what I eat.

Two questions. Can you recommend any BASIC books on diet and sugar, I am not a great cook and can't be bothered with fiddly recipes ?

Secondly suggest any low sugar to buy or bake that are low sugar ? I do like one biccy with my coffee or tea.

I looked at the GTECH ones, they are £1000!!!!

gettingonabit Sat 25-Jun-16 13:33:17

I think it's called GTech.

No I'll investigate that. Think I've posted on the wrong thread, oh dear, not very good at this, hopefully I'll get better. Thanks for replying, I'look intobfold ups too x

I've got a little, fold down bike, which I'm marginally more likely to use than a "proper" one.

Have you seen those on the telly that kinda pedal themselves? Probably hideously expensive, but, hey!

GrannyO Sat 25-Jun-16 09:43:28

In a burst of enthusiasm I bought a bike, now realise it was totally unsuitable -too heavy, not enough gears ( I live up a hill), thought I was going to die the first time I rode it. Any suggestions for a very light model, not hugely expensive would be welcomed, as current model's going on gumtree.

Mmmm...I thought those foodstuffs-honey, treacle, syrup etc were basically sugar.

TriciaF Tue 24-May-16 14:34:53

Would honey be less unhealthy than golden syrup? I mean the runny kind.
I use a big jar of very cheap honey for cooking. It's a blend of honeys from different parts of the world.

jing????? - ?????

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 24-May-16 13:57:59

Anyone else want to put the boot in for no reason what-so-flippin-ever?! confused shock

jollyg Tue 24-May-16 13:51:55

Nankate. I hope you find a warmer reception on your new thread. Jings can be very ascerbic at times, uncalled for normally.

whitewave Tue 24-May-16 13:49:47

Oh please don't be offended by my post to Jing nan I was speaking generally as it were and trying to cheer Jing up as she is a tad sensitive although you would never know it at times??????

NanKate Tue 24-May-16 13:03:15

Thanks Mamie I will move thread to find out more about low carbs.

NanKate Tue 24-May-16 13:01:49

I have sent you a PM Jing as I have clearly upset you, which was not my intention.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 24-May-16 11:34:11

Thanks Whitewave.

grin re the burgers!

Mamie Tue 24-May-16 11:19:17

NanKate won't you join us on the low-carb support thread? I know some of us talk a lot about recipes and cooking and I think perhaps that has put you off (apologies if that isn't the case), but the whole point of the thread is to offer help and support to get people from where they are to where they want to be.
You would be very welcome.

whitewave Tue 24-May-16 11:19:03

????????????????

That should read buggers !!!!!!!!! But burgers is OK given the subject.

whitewave Tue 24-May-16 11:17:53

jing don't let the burgers get you down??

Ever onwards ever upwards.

Don't forget this is virtual - none of us is real.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 24-May-16 11:10:11

I still think my suggestion is the best one. Flapjacks are very rich. You can add oats to the topping. Very nourishing.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 24-May-16 11:06:46

I don't know why I'm still here. I had a mean thing said to me actually on Christmas Day, and now this. Is Gransnet worth it?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 24-May-16 11:05:01

That is just so not true. confused I didn't realise that this was a thread giving you, personally, advice. I have simply stated my views re sugar in our diets. I do not wish to sabotage anything. I think that is quite a mean thing to say.

I think my suggestion of Apple crumble with no sugar in the topping is a good one. I meant it to be helpful.

I can assure you the 'argie bargie" there was on this thread last week was very upsetting for me, and spoilt a lovely four day break I was having in Wales. My fault for coming on Gransnet I suppose. When will I learn?

I too have unpleasant health problems, and I would never dream of spoiling any help being given to others.

Like I said, I didn't realise this was a personally tailored thread for one poster only.

Mamie Tue 24-May-16 10:54:01

I don't use golden syrup anymore, but the answer is to dip the spoon first in very hot water and then the syrup slides straight off.

My Mum was a brilliant cook and never owned any scales. She used the 1 rounded tabs = 1oz system and measured margarine or lard by using the 8oz block and cutting half or a quarter etc. as needed She had a good eye and could tell when "it looks right".

I still make Yorkshire pudding/pancakes by "when it looks right" and never weigh the ingredients although I do for everything else. Apart from golden syrup!

No, they are empty, jings. I saved them from the Queen's Jubilee year; they are fancy ones smile
