Is there any alternative to butter that tastes nice? Reduced fat ones not good so tried new spread with coconut oil and another with avocado both tasteless, trying to lose weight but it's so hard and I do love butter

I love butter and cream and cheese blush

I sympathise. Ive just lost 2 1/2 stones. I have always loved butter. One of the things I chose to give up completely was bread. This was difficult. A bonus was, bread is a vehicle for butter so I wasn't having that either. Now I am trying to maintain my weight I still enjoy butter, but only a little, occasionally as a treat. On a sandwich I like salad cream rather than butter, but this may not be much better.

Good luck!

We use "I can't believe" it's not butter.

Not sure how this rates calorie-wise, but we find Vitalite is more palatable than other spreads. I'm a dairy free zone and it's one of the few spreads that's not got any dairy in it.

I have to say , we use butter . I'd rather have less or invest my slimming worl points on a little of the real stuff.

I use it mainly on toast and try and have a sandwich filling that doesn't need butter on the bread first when making sandwiches.

I read an article yesterday comparing butter and non-dairy spreads, healthwise, and it said the general view now is that butter, cheese, cream etc are no more harmful than some margarines. In moderate amounts.
I've been avoiding them sine a heart problem 10 years ago, and now find I don't like the taste of butter. But I love cream on fruit - yum!

I agree cutting down on bread reduces the butter intake considerably. Low fat mayonnaise is good on jacket potatoes, and spread on bread if you want to make a salad sandwich. If you are having scrambled egg on toast, you don't need butter on the toast if you have a sliver stirred into the scrambled egg, Greek Yoghurt is a good cream substitute I find.

can we still get sandwhich spread ?

Indinana Sun 17-Jul-16 21:02:25

We both love cream but no longer buy it, except as a treat at that midwinter festival that shall not be named until 1st December. Instead we use low fat crème fraîche, which we have thoroughly become used to. Delicious in Eton Mess! (and yes, I know, the meringue.....).

Yes grannylyn I have some in the cupboard.

I never us anything but butter, whether I am on a diet or not. There is simply no alternative.

But like others I find there are many cases where something entirely different can be used. I find if I am having anything on toast, not just scrambled eggs, but baked beans, tomatoes etc. The toast does not need to be buttered. In sandwiches, quark makes a good substitute for butter, or even a little bit of pesto. It is high in flavour, so very little is needed. Quark and a spoonful of parmesan makes a good baked potato filler.

I think the answer is keep using butter, but where possible use something entirely different.

My husband and i dont eat much bread these days a loaf(kept in freezer) lasts a couple of weeks usually so we have cut down on our use of butter too. I find it better to buy the hard blocks so i can cut into four and leave one portion in butter dish to soften and the rest in the fridge. I found that i ended up throwing away the soft spread butter as the tubs were too large to use before the use by date.

BBbevan Mon 18-Jul-16 08:22:29

Yes * grannylyn* DHs favourite. I know Sainsburys sell it

Mumsy Mon 18-Jul-16 08:38:45

We've been using Flora Light for years. My kids like it. I've never liked butter. I find it sickly. And I don't eat a lot of the F.L. either, preferring nice bread as is. We put yoghurt on our jacket potatoes. And I use light crème fraiche for most sauces. I'm not keen on olive oil spreads as they are so greasy. I use a lot of Philli light cream cheese too, as an alternative to full fat cheese.

Zena510 Mon 18-Jul-16 09:34:13

We're Clover users also......after many trials of many products we always come back to this.

As a diabetic for the last 20 years I take a great interest in diet. In the books and articles I've read recently the best way to control my blood sugar level AND to lose weight isn't to stop eating butter and cream but to stop carbohydrates. And I find it works. So, drop the spuds (very difficult, I know), only eat wholemeal bread, brown rice and avoid white pasta like the plague. Take a good walk most days after a meal. It's highly likely the pounds will drop off. As for the yellow grease that tries to pass itself in many forms as butter, when it's actually margarine, well I'm sorry but it doesn't fool me. My BM index is exactly as it should be and I take full cream milk in my coffee each morning (in the right cup, of course) and enjoy an occasional spoonful of cream when I eat strawberries. So I suggest that you stop the calorie struggle and check the carbs - brilliant and not only easier but it works!

We love butter, but tend to put it on things in slices rather than spread it, which is really unhealthy!
So, we use real butter for things that really need it, scones and so on, but Bertolli with Butter Spread for everything else.
I loathe olive oil in all it's forms but I honestly can't taste it in this spread, it's lovely!

Another vote for lchf diet. OH has lost nearly a stone in the last 8 weeks. We have eaten no bread or potatoes or pasta. We have a little rice with curry. Other than that we haven't really changed what we eat just more vegetables/salad. Favourite of the week is halved bell peppers stuffed with Bolognese sauce topped with grated cheese.

grannylyn65 Mon 18-Jul-16 15:59:01

Thanks, no Sainsburys but will try Azda or Tesco ?!

Alima Mon 18-Jul-16 19:56:51

I was on some diet or other years ago and stopped using butter/spread totally. Now I really do not like butter or spread in sarnies at all, seems like a layer of grease to me. As long as the bread is fresh (granary or white as wholemeal is very dry) I don't add anything but the filling. Thought this was odd at first but it is amazing how many people find the same. Do not use it on toast or baked spuds either. DH loves butter, even dollops it on ginger cake and he used to put some in the saucepan when heating baked beans. Double yuk!

BBbevan Tue 19-Jul-16 06:12:55

I am also on the LCHF diet. Only trouble with butter is remembering to get it out of the fridge.

Anya Tue 19-Jul-16 06:55:09

Put DH on lchf over a year ago. He's just had his annual check up yesterday.

Blood glucose fine. Cholesterol 4.2.

Yes, we eat butter but not the bread to put it on.
