The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.

Mamie I'm having a bad brain day, can you help?

Someone ( you??) had a recipe for a pudding using chocolate and pears ??? I think. Does that mean anything to you?

If so could you please direct me to it on this thread....and if not just ignore me until I get my thinking head back on smile hmm confused

Anya Thu 30-Mar-17 17:44:11

Yes maimeo ditch the fruit (and fruit juice) and stick to one piece a day, preferably a handful of berries. Plan your meals and snacks and write down exactly what you are going to eat that day eg

Breakfast: natural, full fat yoghurt with strawberries ? or raspberries with cream
Lunch: hot roast chicken (from deli) with coleslaw or mushroom omlette
Dinner: left over chicken from lunch in a Caesar saiad (substitute crispy bacon instead of croutons) or lamb curry with cauliflower rice.
Snacks: piece of cheese and/or handful of mixed nuts

Just an example but if you've written it all down there's more chance of keeping to it.

I adapt a lot of the Hairy Dieters recipes, taking out any potatoes, for example, and substituting mushrooms or extra veg. I never worry about how much I eat or how many calories and I never feel hungry.

Welcome Maimeo. You definitely can feel full after eating low carb meal. I have been eating this way for over a year and am never hungry these days. I won't deny that I occasional crave the odd chip or bar of choc, but not something I would eat regularly. As Mamie has said there's lots of food you can eat and the trick is to plan your menus and only buy what you have planned in my experience. It will be worth it in the end. Check out some recipes and let us know how you are doing.

Mamie Thu 30-Mar-17 08:27:53

Think salads, above ground veg, eggs, meat, fish, cheese, some fruit but not too much and not tropical. Cauliflower mash /rice is a good staple.

Maimeo Thu 30-Mar-17 08:24:54

Thank you Mamie, as I've a busy day ahead I'll just try and figure out simple meals for today, and then maybe get together some recipes tomorrow. Very low resolve at the moment..... will keep checking in with this thread for inspiration!

Mamie Thu 30-Mar-17 08:18:26

Good morning and welcome!
Breakfast could be full-fat yoghurt and berries, eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms....
The great thing about this way of eating is that you absolutely do not have to feel hungry.
Let us know how we can help. ?

Hi everyone, I've arrived very reluctantly to this thread having been in absolute despair about my weight recently. Been getting heavier for a few years gradually but now it's gone beyond ignoring it - I'm not going up another size in my clothes, I feel unhealthy and embarrassed. Have done different diets in the past but definitely think my downfall is bread which had resulted in a big carb belly. I'm interested in LC but terrified I'll feel hungry and fall off the wagon immediately. Always crave carbs when I'm hungry. So, I'm just about to have breakfast..... fruits, yoghurt and sprinkling of granola? Or no granola?

Hi everyone, Hope you're doing well. End of week 2 for me.The swimming pool where I get weighed is closed for a few weeks so I'm not sure what I weigh. The scales at another pool tell me I haven't lost anything. How dare they! Probably right though because I went to a Burmese restaurant on Wednesday. Lots of lovely grub, some with sweet dipping sauces, a tasty salad with greens, mangoes, onions, pea powder and spices and a coconut curried noodle soup with bean curd puffs. I sinned. Back on the straight and narrow since and I've resolved not to eat out for a while. At home I've cut out bread, rice, pasta and spuds and feel better for it.

Oh! You could NEVER eat Delphine even if she stopped laying!

Mamie Thu 23-Mar-17 18:57:12

Oh she is beautiful.
My neighbour's chickens all have bare necks ready for you-know-what. ?

Anya Thu 23-Mar-17 17:16:09

Delphine

BBbevan Thu 23-Mar-17 16:10:48

Sadly I don't speak Welsh Mamie My Grandfather was Welsh speaking but did not pass it on to my Mum. I can understand a lot though, which can be amusing.

Anya Thu 23-Mar-17 07:34:40

Peppered steak, with mushroom and mustard sauce (made using FF crème fraiche) and crispy salad, tomato, cucumber and spring onion. Couldn't eat it all. Very filling. It's DH!s signature dish (from Hairy Dieters)

Mamie Thu 23-Mar-17 05:42:05

We had a nice baked fish yesterday - bream with peppers, celery, onion, olives. Finished up with a lump of blue cheese.
BB I am teaching my English conversation class about Wales today. Shall start with Croeso y Cymru on the board. ?

BBbevan Wed 22-Mar-17 21:15:12

Oh bless??

Anya Wed 22-Mar-17 20:13:30

PS We call her and Violette The Vultures.

Anya Wed 22-Mar-17 20:12:05

Too wet to get a photo will try tomorrow!! Five more eggs - help! Mamie perhaps Delphine has heard about your neighbour's way with non-layers shock

BB Delphine doesn't do 'love' she's as aggressive as they come!! That's why she in a run with just one other chicken for company - the only one who stands up to her.

Lazigirl Wed 22-Mar-17 15:49:46

I look old bedraggled and a bit wobbly on my feet Anya and my eggs have stopped long ago so well done to your hen. Perhaps there's no such thing as a fowl menopause? I have just been to Cornwall for a week and have been eating off piste - cream teas, icecream, potatoes, lovely bread, chips, and so on, but am back on "normal stuff" again now. Have only gained couple of pounds but just shows how easy it would be to put weight back on. I have Tagine envy again after seeing your lovely red one, but spent the money on a painting, so will have to wait a bit longer. Welcome Seasidenana, you seem to be doing brilliantly.

BBbevan Tue 21-Mar-17 21:08:58

Sounds like she is in love Anya ?

Mamie Tue 21-Mar-17 19:17:55

Some of the eggs we get are sort of wrinkled; it looks terribly painful for the poor hens. When they have finished laying my neighbour wrings their necks and wheels them up in the wheelbarrow for plucking and freezing. 'Tis very rural here. ?

Anya Tue 21-Mar-17 18:46:19

I'll try and post a photo of her .Mamie but it's too dark now, just locked her away for the night. She used to lay double Yorkers....very long thin eggs.

Mamie Tue 21-Mar-17 16:42:40

Is she French? Maybe related to my neighbour's hens who are regularly producing double-yolkers and even the odd triple. ??

Anya Tue 21-Mar-17 15:40:32

Tell me about it Mamie I'm getting 5 .eggs a day for 5 hens! Giving them away to anyone who passes our front door.

And wondering why my old hen, Delphine, (aged 8 the only survivor of my original flock) has come back into lay. She laid perhaps a dozen eggs, all told, last year and looked old and bedraggled and a bit wobbly on her feet. I was expecting to find her dead any day soon, then about three weeks ago she suddenly blossomed, put on feathers, her thingy on top of her head (?) turned bright red, she started strutting around her run and now she's popping out big eggs most days confused

Mamie Tue 21-Mar-17 05:42:18

Glad it is going well NewgranGill. Tonight we are having Ottolenghi's aubergine cheesecake with salad. We seem to have a too many eggs crisis at the moment. ?

Anya Mon 20-Mar-17 12:32:49

Good! smile
