Oh dear, I'm currently fighting the munchies with a red wine (rather more than a thimble full) and half a bag of Snapeas rice sticks. I did try Jayh's suggestion of waiting 5 minutes to see if I still wanted the Snapeas before I ate them (but that was just after I'd eaten the first half a bag). I was on a 5:2 fast day yesterday though, so I think I can be forgiven.
That oat/egg/cinnamon etc bake sounds tasty, alicebandit. As a snack though, not a meal.

Anyone got a recipe for something to stop the munchies?
(63 Posts)To try and reduce the pressure on my joints, I'm trying to lose a pound or so a week. I'm 5'5" tall, weighing in at 13st 5lbs. By Christmas I would like to be around 12st if possible.
I'm managing to reduce my portions/calories but I do like a little treat with a cuppa once a day. Yesterday I made a fat free fruit loaf which is lovely but it includes quite a bit of sugar and flour so I still have to be careful.
I'm looking for a tasty cake/loaf recipe which is as filling, but healthy as I can find. I'm hoping one of you fellow grandparents can conjure up just the thing, lol.
Try my recipe peaceatlast. I'm halfway through the cake now. It's really nice.
Sod the weightloss. And the indigestion.
Nellimoser has hit the nail on the head here, and apologies if you think this sounds harsh, but If you are serious about losing weight you do not look for recipes for cake or 'something nice.' A pint of water with a teaspoon or organic cider vinegar will take away your cravings. Alternatively try ginger tea. I know it sounds cruel but that is the reality.
I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic and was determined not to go down that route. No cakes, biscuits etc, and a very low carb intake. I also changed from fat free/low fat yogurt, spread etc., to high fat, and exercised +++. My weight dropped off, I moved to pre diabetic and am now classed as having reversed diabetes or in remission. Whatever you prefer to call it.
I kid you not, it has been so, so, so difficult and everything I eat has been reassessed. I know for sure that any 'treat' is no longer an option if I want to stay healthy, and the ball is firmly in my court. A year on I still have friends who say, "oh just have a piece of this, it won't do any harm." ?
We are on a low fat eating regime since DH had an infected gallbladder last year. I make apple turnovers using pizza dough. It's low fat and no added sugar. I packet makes 6, and they keep well in the fridge for a few days. I also make banana and raisin flapjack. Mash 5 ripe bananas, mix well with 250g oats, 100g raisins and 2 tsps cinnamon. Spread out on a baking tray lined with baking paper and cook in the oven, 180 degrees for about 25 minutes. It makes loads, keeps well, tastes better the day after it is made and is totally delicious. We are both losing weight slowly and steadily but have a dessert every day. It's easy for you skinnies out there to say don't have any snacks or eat fruit but sometimes you need a proper sweet treat. Hope this helps, peaceatlast, and good luck.
Thank you so much for your suggestions. I will definitely try some of them. As it happens, I am actually managing quite well as I have been kept busy, eg. cooking fry ups and baking cakes for our workmen who are doing a great job with me keeping them sweet. Actually, I haven't been tempted to eat as the smell puts me off and have managed to resist even my own cakes. In fact, I made some lovely cakes when my granddaughter was here last week and sat and watched everyone else enjoying them.
So, so far, so good, I have gone down to 13st 3lbs which feels like I am going in the right direction. I haven't had an alcoholic drink for more than two weeks but have found that so easy as I'm a social drink only. I haven't been out for a meal for more than two weeks either (unusual)so I'm hopeful that things will continue like this, slowly but surely. Yesterday, for the first time in two weeks, I had a half of a Twix and half a little individual cheesecake but can't say I particularly enjoyed either, strangely. Plenty of fruit and veg, chicken and fish seems to be working fine. I've cut down on the number of cuppas in the day too as, in good Scottish fashion, I find it hard to drink tea without something to accompany it, lol.
I have a new gadget that emits a little taste of chocolate/ mint or fruit........or it would, if I could work the darn thing. Allegedly it does enough to kill a craving........so far have used loads of energy trying to get it going. It does not vape.........and in my case does nothing at all..........but one fine day I am going to be puffing chocolate like no tomorrow....except it won't be tomorrow have to wait for more savvy person to visit first.
I agree with Nelliemoser. I gained two stone after back surgery and had to lose it as the surgery was only 80% effective, so I need to keep weight off my frame.
Carbs need to be kept at a minimum and I do not eat any with my evening meal at all. I have extra veg. So no jacket or roast potatoes, no chips. I drink an Actimel every morning after tea and toast.
Somewhere I read that they drink a cup of marmite tea before a meal...said it made them feel a bit full. Haven't tried that one!
For the first month we changed our routine and ate our bigger meal at mid-day, then a BLT or scrambled eggs on toast, or toasted ham/cheese/tomato. It helped because we'd walk after our mid-day dinner, then only having the light meal about 5-6pm.
I did (and still do) have my one sinful treat to look forward to before bed. Sains sells these ice cream cones. Sorry for long link, but it has the nutritional info. They are their brand of chocolate nut cones and have 184 calories. But are so decadent tasting, much better than a cornetto. I feel spoilt after one and guilt free!

I'm with Weightwatchers and have been gold, at target healthy weight, for 7 years now
. I try and keep a long way under target and go up when i splurge and then work at getting back down. You weigh in free if below target.
They are very good at advice on what is filling, healthy, tasty and still helps you lose lbs. They are good at helping deal with the emotions and habits that make you snack too.
One of their tips is freeze slices of banana and grapes and those make very good snacks. Fruit and veg are actually mostly free on their plan, but you need to be sensible. I get their choc digestives, which I like, and know how many 'points' in each(1) so can plan and keep control...mostly
They are good at encouraging and supporting. I was just under 19 stones in 2004, size 28 skirt, and started with Slimmingworld and then had a break and grained a bit, and then went to WW. I am 10stones 7lbs now.
Have you tried Special K Biscuit Moments? I like the Black Forest Gateau, but there are others, I forget how many cals but I find them satisfying.
Peaceatlast, most cake recipes you can cut the sugar down by up to half. Experiment until you find a recipe that you are happy with. hugs
Cut the carbs - they are what make you hungry. A high fat low carb diet is the best way if you can't cope with hunger. www.dietdoctor.com give plenty of info and it has changed our eating habits permanently as we really don't want to return to 'normal' which has always meant hunger pangs. You can adjust it by topping up with healthy foods like fruit and nuts to lose weight at a sensible pace (full on, weight just falls off!) and we've never eaten so well or been so fit. White flour and white sugar are killers!
Give the 5_2 way of eating a try. I went from 11.5 to 8-5 in about year and have kept the weight off.
Izabella Well done you! What an achievement ? That must have taken a lot of self discipline and you must be delighted with the results. That's what's called taking responsibility for your own health.
Oh dear, peaceatlast, I would really struggle if I had to cook fry-ups and treats. That must be really hard. Good on you for your progress! Will you always have to do this cooking?
Removing the temptation foods and not buying them is the only way I can stay on the straight and narrow. And agree, alcohol has massive calories, so am only indulging occasionally now.
Wishing you the best...you can do it a little at a time. And get a good scale if you don't have one. I have a Wilkinson's cheapie and found that it was telling me I was 4-5 pounds more sometimes. My husband thought I was bs-ing him, but I stepped on and off the scale a few times after it went back to zero and got different weights each time and he did, too. Grrrrrrr.
Hang in there!
Try Slimming World they have lots of advice and yummy healthy receipes.
I think it's the very idea of 'liking a sweet treat with a cuppa' which is the problem.
Low fat but 'quite a bit' of sugar and flour is the wrong way to go.
There is now a body of opinion which says that fat is NOT the problem. Natural fats - butter, lard, dripping - are good. 'Trans' fats i.e. the industrially-produced ones are the only fats which are really harmful
The really big baddie is sugar.
Those ripe bananas - try a banana custard made with Birds' custard powder and whole milk. No need to add any sugar.
The whole idea of 'needing sweet treats' is really a throwback to early childhood. We don't need them any more.
Crunchy marmite sticks are very morish. Brush wholemeal bread with a little olive oil then spread thinly with marmite and cut into four fingers. put on baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper and cook for one hour on 130c also breadsticks are low fat
More great advice, thanks. I will work my way through them. Those ice creams look good.
I have tried slimming clubs over the years. I've been up and down in weight over the years. In my early 30s I joined one because I thought I was overweight- I was 8st 11lbs! I could only see fat me in the mirror and could see where it was leading so I stopped dieting and the weight has gradually built up through comfort eating following divorce and other traumas. I've dieted, lost weight then regained it. Too much of 'the good life', eating out etc.
When I was growing up, we were fed doughnuts, cakes, sweets etc. on a constant basis- a cheap way to fill us up I suppose. No excuse now though.
Re the fry ups for workmen- thankfully a temporary thing, they will be finished soon.
Jinglebellfrocks---your cake recipe sounds lovely but I think the glace cherries ,which are packed with sugar, would be better left out and replaced by raisins which are naturally sweet. I'll try it and see what it's like. I've been making courgette cakes lately and they are a great success, really tasty and moist---didn't fancy the idea at first but now I'm a convert.
Buy a chocolate orange and break into segments then put them in a container in the fridge. As the chocolate will be freezing cold, it'll take longer to munch. Practice mindful eating so savour the flavour and take your time.
Have a glass of water....you might be thirsty!
Dried cranberries have loads of added sugar in as they are naturally very sour.
Buy a bag of crystallised ginger and nibble on that. It satisfies the sweet tooth but you can't eat much. It's solved my snacking problems
I have handful of nuts, or a yogurt which helps as I am a grazer and am trying to loose weight also fruit but that has sugar too. I have made a fruit cake h likes home made so do I so a small slice so think that's ok
Get up and do something or go out .
