Anyone else going to try this?
There's a Facebook page and lots of people have joined in the last few days .

So far this year I have walked a minimum of 5 miles (often more) per day until today! The snow and ice have made it too treacherous so having a lazy time baking and eating!
I reckon I will have done over 2000 miles by the end of the year. I have done this for several years and have kept up the habit despite various injuries and Polymyalgia. I dread not being able to get out. I realize that I have been lucky so far. I feel for those with mobility problems.

I confess I gave up very early with this challenge. Has anyone been successful?

I've also got a little rebounder down in the cellar, little used (it's not much fun exercising away hemmed in by storage boxes, a noisy freezer and the washing machine). It's been banished there since DH claimed my vigorous bouncing in the front room was probably putting the floorboards at risk. grin

That's a great idea maggiemaybe, I never thought of a stepper. A treadmill is out of the question in my flat but a stepper might be just the thing. Off to investigate the possibilities ....

Maggiemaybe Fri 06-Oct-17 16:16:03

I do a lot of indoor walking if I need some steps to top up my daily target, wildswan. I sometimes use a stepper in front of the TV, but often just march on the spot. Looking completely mad, of course, but I have read that it's just as good for you as walking if you keep up a brisk pace. I'd much rather get outside in the fresh air on a good day, but as you say, the cold and wind can be very off-putting.

wildswan16 Fri 06-Oct-17 14:24:02

I had set myself a target of 500 miles over the summer months. I started at the beginning of April and managed to finish at the beginning of September. I just use an old fashioned pedometer and keep a spreadsheet of steps and miles walked.

My problem is going to be how to keep walking through the winter as I react very badly to the cold and the wind. I have thought about going to a gym and using a treadmill but have never set foot in a gym in my life and wonder if I will feel the same benefit walking indoors as I do outside?

Maggiemaybe Tue 03-Oct-17 18:44:32

Dare I ask how everyone's doing with the challenge now? And more importantly, are you all fit and well?

I'm still better at filling in the spreadsheet than walking the walk, but it is telling me that I'd covered 938 miles by the end of week 39 as opposed to my target of 780 miles, so I'm not too unhappy with that. I do blush when I see my less impressive daily totals (452, anyone?), and I haven't gone over 20,000 steps once (I find I need a sightseeing day in London for that).

Is everyone still on target?

Thanks jogginggirl xxx

So sorry to read this Badenkate - I can only imagine how frustrated you must be feeling ?

Pease take time to recover from this and look after yourself.... everything else can wait. I hope these help? and ?never goes amiss......

Get well soon ?xxxx

Badenkate Fri 03-Mar-17 17:04:02

A week ago I went into AF, so just walking is an exhausting exercise at the moment. You have no idea how frustrated I amangry. No idea if/when it's going to sort itself out - I don't think it's going to do it by itself this time. I may need help - I can see DH looking longingly at his defibrillator!

Well, mostly February turned out to be a huge fail on the 'boots on' miles....? A lingering virus, worries over my DM and DD and organising a 90th birthday for DM meant that the time flew by and before I knew it I had a row of zeros on my Excel sheet and no money in the Alzheimer's jar ?

We have nipped over to France for a few days respite and today we have resumed walking....a respectable 3.37 miles done.... now to get back on the bike keep it going ?‍♀️??

How are others doing ....? ?

jogginggirl Thu 09-Feb-17 22:14:56

How is everyone going with this challenge....? Mr jg and I are still stepping out - some weeks better than others... We are still enjoying 'putting the world to rights' and 'clearing the head fog' on our walks.... If we can keep going at this rate in the winter - then the spring and summer walking should help us to reach our target.

We have found some wonderful walks locally and a bit further afield - so many beautiful places to walk here in North Shropshire/Staffordshire borders....?‍♀️??

PS Apparently I walked 1056 miles in 2016

Very odd that this info should come through just as I was posting on this thread. Big Brother is watching?

looks round and over her shoulder

I'm not actually part of this challenge but I like to keep my 'steps' up to a reasonable level. My Fitbit informs me I average 7,500 a day (more in better weather)

Was horrified yesterday, late afternoon, to see only 2,400 registering so took myself for a walk into town and returned 5,000 steps later carrying a samovar ..... as one does.

Grannyknot Wed 18-Jan-17 07:55:56

jogging one can certainly "put the world to rights" on a walk. I walk with a group every Monday and every single person has joined for a different reason (there are about 10+ regulars) and it's interesting how many people have walked their way to a better mood or frame of mind.

Maggie your holiday sounds lovely.

jogginggirl Tue 17-Jan-17 19:44:11

Very envious Maggie envy but so glad that you are enjoying such a treat at this time of the year ?

Another 5 miles today ?‍♀️ Mr jg and I are enjoying our 'walk and talk' time - plenty of opportunities to chat through things and no interruptions....?

annodomini Tue 17-Jan-17 15:58:11

Maggiemaybe - envy. If there was a lovely beach and glorious sunshine here, I wouldn't be averse to a 7 mile walk!

Maggiemaybe Tue 17-Jan-17 15:05:39

I have walked nearly 7 miles today, along a beautiful beach, in the sun, and am now recovering with a big glass of wine and a Portuguese custard tart. Sorry, I just couldn't resist smile

jogginggirl Mon 16-Jan-17 19:06:21

Well done gettingon - but how frustrating that the fitbit was out of charge!! I have an apple watch which I'm using but I do have to remember to switch to an 'outdoor walk' each time I go out - I'm not much of a techie?so Mr jg has to remind me!

Maggie I once had my luggage searched 4 times by 4 different people because they had found a plastic tail comb in my handbag!! Long before 'plastic bags and shoes-off' times, I was mortified!!?So, probably best to leave the knitting needles behind??

I managed 4 miles today - on serious catch-up - the ankle was fine, I chose to use my very old running shoes to walk in and had no problem ?‍♀️?‍♀️

Elrel Mon 16-Jan-17 18:58:33

Thanks!

gettingonabit Mon 16-Jan-17 11:00:28

If you google fitbit, there's a forum and an online help thingy.

Elrel Mon 16-Jan-17 09:21:02

Recharged my Fitbit but the time is wrong, can anyone advise how to reset the clock please?

gettingonabit Mon 16-Jan-17 09:19:30

I did 7000 steps yesterday that didn't register because fitbit was out of chargesad. Spoiled my run of steps since New Year. sadsad.

I think I'm getting obsessed. blush.

Grannyknot Sun 15-Jan-17 22:31:31

I've taken a crochet hook on the plane before without any problems! I'm not very good at crocheting though.

Sorry to digress, back to walking!

I'm way behind, it's been so rainy here and I just didn't feel like getting wet.

Maggiemaybe Sun 15-Jan-17 21:32:51

grin, Grannyknot. If only they'd let me take my deadly knitting needles on board the plane, I'd be working on my creation (or I could whip up a quick scarf out there if it's not as warm as I'm expecting!).
