Does anyone play croquet. I am researching set up a club in the town were I live (it doesn't have one). I have been 'given' a perfect site and obtained funding for equipment. If anyone has any tips I would be very grateful.

Didn't we have a thread on this subject recently? I can't find it now though...

We had a lovely lawn in the house where I grew up and it was set up as a croquet pitch. We spent hours playing - it was quite addictive. We kept to the rules, so it was very frustrating when school friends visited and if we tried to play they just messed about.

Unfortunately, it's not taken seriously enough. But you do need a perfect lawn for proper club playing - with not a wormcast in sight! Maybe an artificial grass covering would be the only answer. Don't know what the croquet association have to say about that.

We are very lucky to have the use of an unwanted bowling green and the grounds staff are excellent. It about starting up a new club and finding members that I ask really.

Open days, similar to the type Bowls Clubs hold, held weekly on a regular day over the summer might be a good start.

Presumably, you'll start it on an informal basis? Will you set up a Committee?

Sounds like a big commitment - but good for you.

When I wanted to start something similar I recruited friends but also advertised in the local village/parish magazines. It's cheap and they have quite a good reach. You could also contact WIs (they might let you give a talk to their members) and put a notice in your local paper. Another way is to ask your local radio station if they will give you a plug.
