Just wondered what keeps you all trim.....

I do a few exercises such as twisting, turning and stretching while waiting for the kettle to boil, just short bursts, I'm afraid. A short walk round the block, weather and enthusiasm permitting.
I used to do more but I my difficulty is that I absolutely loathe most sports and I hate getting wet or sweaty.
I must try harder.

You are all putting me to shame! Thanks, Merlot for the link. I've given it a go. I can see that if I do it every day, it will improve fitness levels. At the mo however, I have the lurgy so was exhausted after half the programme.

Onward and upward! Once I'm recovered....

Last October I made the decision to start a fitness routine. Although I have used a gym before I had not done exercise for some years other than walking and gardening.
I joined a local sports centre and do three classes a week Pilates, Yoga, and Body flow, on the same day have 20 minutes on the treadmill walking fast and use weights in the gym for about an hour for prevention of osteoporosis.
My balance was terrible but I noticed this week that there is some improvement. I have also joined a walking group.
I can't say I enjoy this but I want to be able to do most things into old age so am prepared to put the time in.
I eat a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables mostly home cooked and low on processed food.

I do squats while waiting for kettle to boil, then plank while morning tea is brewing. I go to gym for treadmill/bike or light weights 4 or 5 times a week for 45 mins and walk most places within a mile of my home. 5 lengths of any pool on holiday and just keep moving ladies - my dad is 84 and he told me when I retired that if you stop doing what you’ve always done, you won’t be able to do what you’ve always done!

This mad woman keeps me in shape. I also do basic yoga stretches every morning to get me going.

I have a friend who tells me she has lost inches off her waist and muffin top by using a hula hoop for 5-10 minutes, several times a day. She certainly looks slimmer.

I was impressed enough to get one myself. It didn’t take me long to pick it up again (I was around the first time it was a craze). I found that I needed to build up slowly at first, modern hula hoops are heavy and I had to cut back as I became quite sore around my waist and ribcage. I also got out of breath quickly so it is good exercise.

I've been travelling a lot lately though and have to start again (I didn't take my hoop with me). hmm

Someone upthread asked about getting back into swimming. I booked myself a couple of swimming lessons just after my 60th birthday as I was determined to learn front crawl. Well worth it and now I swim every day in the week. Alternate lengths breast/crawl. Make sure you learn properly and use goggles and have your face underwater.

I do Cardiovascular exercise daily as I heard from lot of peoples that this exercise. It is very helpful to keep arteries clear by raising “good” high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and lowering “bad” low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in the blood.

Me, too, Inishowen, x2 per week. Like you, I’m sure if I were to start pilates from scratch now, I wouldn’t be able to do it, let alone get up and down from the floor. If I miss a couple of sessions I can really feel the difference too. Unlike an earlier poster I can’t do the plank with fully stretched arms as my wrists hurt too much, but apart from that I can tackle most of the exercises.

annie take a look at chair yoga on you tube, it is very gentle but does help with muscle strength and flexibility

jeanie99 Mon 01-Oct-18 02:29:35

I don't do anything at the moment, I went to the gym for many years and did belong to a walking group also.
I do gardening but that's about all I really do need to get back into exercise.
I have certain health issues though I have to consider.

Goodness gracious me, you all put me to shame. I walk with my dogs daily, do the housework then lift the chocolate from the fridge - that's all folks.

Regularly jogging and swimming or cycling on weekdays are
the exercises included in my daily routine. Here I come to know about pilates...keen to try this.

Last night at WI I did a short 'chairobics' session and several people said how much they enjoyed it. The idea was to show them that even the less mobile can do something to improve their fitness. I found lots of examples on YouTube.

Using weights is important to me to keep muscle tone. Also, I think more muscle mass helps keep weight off. when I am resting.

Day6 Crikey! Well done but you don't have to do it all at once! Do the first slope and come back. Start small and build up slowly. Aim for the shop as your ultimate destination and set a time target of days or weeks to achieve it. Then you can set a new goal. Good luck! ?

Fennel Thu 10-May-18 09:24:35

Just walking, about 30 minutes a day.
We're staying temporarily near fields and woods with lovely walks, but involving getting over stiles. I have to manually lift my second foot to get that leg over. shock.
Reminds me of the joke, from an older man
"I need a leg up to get my leg over!"

Anniebach Thu 10-May-18 09:14:41

Thank you vickya

PamelaJ1 Thu 10-May-18 07:15:26

I am still standing on one leg when I clean my teeth, you can steady yourself with a finger on the sink if you wobble a bit. Right leg in the morning, left at night.
Also play tennis and swim weekly. I still work and that involves a lot of getting up and sitting down, good for those thigh muscles.
I do find that, as happened last week, if I have to climb a steep hill or a huge flight of steps it’s so interesting to keep stopping for a ‘look at the view’?
Annie, you can lift weights sitting watching television, start with a small item and work up. As has been mentioned if your knees aren’t too painful just put a stool in front of the chair and keep lifting your feet on and off. Every little helps!

I've never been one for exercise although I did used to walk miles, sadly I can no longer walk far without pain. However I do walk to my local shop a few times a week & try to go without my stick, there is a short, steep slope on the way. I'm improving slowly.

I started Plates in the New Year (new class started not NYR), I do struggle to get onto the floor, turn over & get up but I manage slowly. I feel some improvement, very slow but I feel it's worth persevering. I try to be active in the garden but have to have frequent breaks but every little helps.

Day6, I admire your attempt and honesty. I remember similar sensations well. Each day mine got easier (a little. Not to be exaggerated). Now I can almost run in both directions but I never carry any weighty items. Think in the dark is a good idea if it suits your comfort zone especially now that we have the better weather. Here's hoping you'll be doing it in daylight before the short nights return. Good luck.
