Losing weight then binging and putting it straight back on and more!

The subject is my problem. I get so bored munching my way through all the veg that eventually I cave in and binge, binge, binge. I’m about a stone and a half overweight but scared what all this is doing to my health.

A stone and a half overweight isn't a major problem. I think you feel deprived 'munching through veg' then resentment inevitably sets in and you compensate by overeating.

Perhaps a better plan, in the long term, is to aim for a really healthy diet and more exercise. It's so much easier to do in the warmer months of the year, though.

I've found that eating an apple before lunch and dinner (although boring) curbs my appetite. The 85% dark chocolate is hard to binge on, too. I can just have a few squares for 'dessert', surprisingly (as I have no willpower with milk chocolate).

I've been doing that. I lost 7 lbs and have almost put it all on again. It's as if I want to punish myself. It's perverse, I know when I'm gorging I shouldn't be but keep on just the same. I now have to start again. I don't know the answer, except self discipline which I seem to have lost.

I think this is something I experienced previously . The moment I feel deprived and one a diet’ food is all I think about !

I’ve had a lot of success this last year with following the Slimming World plan and I put that down to not having to just munch on veggies but eating a full, varied and interesting diet . Also I don’t refer to it as being on a diet - I’m changing my lifestyle !

I have finally realised its about changing poor habits not about a short term quick fix . Nothing is forbidden I can still eat pretty much any type of food I want but I’ve become aware about portion control etc .

Maybe it’s the type of ‘diet’ you’re on that just isn’t right for you Londonwifi?

Just find a way of eating that you like!

Losing weight and keeping it off are long term goals and munching on lettuce leaves is not going to be sustainable long term.

I think we need to think of it as healthy eating not being on a diet. It is SO hard to deny certain foods as we all like the things which are bad for us. Much socialising is done around food and drink which makes it even harder. Even if you have a bad day one day just try to get back to healthy eating the next.
I feel your pain!!!

Diets aren't about deprivation - so old fashioned!grin

Plan a sensible long term healthy eating pattern that suits you, This may mean eating some more vegetables, or fewer biscuits, enough to satisfy you without gaining weight. Once you are used to and happy with that pattern, then reduce the quantities you are eating so that your daily intake is about 1200 calories a day. If this is a struggle for a long period do one week reduced calorie eating, one week ordinary eating.

Make absolutely sure that you have an eating pattern that never leaves you feeling deprived.

Then once you get to your desired weight you drift gently away from the reduced calorie eating to sustainable eating, with out cravings.

I essentially did this about 6 years ago, structuring my eating plan around the 5;2 diet. I lost 2 stone and have not put it back on.

In my experience dieting causes bingeing. Intuitive eating/mindful eating is the only way I have every been able to stop the damaging cycle. If I even think of going on a diet I will start overeating. Learning to eat like someone who has never had a weight problem was the key for me. Doing this has enabled me to never gain weight again and even lose slowly.

I looked in the full length mirror today (I rarely do ) and realised what a fat slob I've become ?

MissAdventure Sat 04-Apr-20 18:52:58

Oh, that's a harsh thing to say about anyone, let alone yourself crazy.

Mind you, I'm a fat slob as well. smile

crazyH Me too. Solution for me - move the full-length mirrors until slimming clubs are open again. grin

It's just boredom that makes me binge, absolutely no self discipline. Being in lockdown is worse, I love rooting around in the cupboard for snacks I'm starving all day.
