3 years 7 months ago on 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our new mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

So Onward and Downward Pears ??

Thanks folks my sister is now negative, but it will take sometime I suspect to regain her strength. Thanks for your concern.

So relieved to have lost some weight recently but still some way to go.

Whiff Fri 12-Aug-22 05:49:18

NanKate hope your sister is feeling bit better. She sounds as if she is a fighter and that will help her. If it's as hot there as it is here that won't help her hopefully she has family there to keep an eye on her. It's a worry for especially as you are just recovering yourself from diverticulitis. ?

SachaMac Thu 11-Aug-22 20:56:37

Sorry to hear about your sister NanKate It sounds like she has been through a lot. Hope she can beat this awful Covid flowers

NanKate Wed 10-Aug-22 14:37:49

Thanks Four.

fourormore Wed 10-Aug-22 09:15:16

Thoughts and prayers for your sister and all your family NanKate Covid is still hitting people, especially the vulnerable.
Well done everyone else who is keeping going!

NanKate Tue 09-Aug-22 22:24:52

Sorry SachaMac I should know by now.

NanKate Tue 09-Aug-22 22:23:23

Thanks folks for your concern. I’m happy to say that I am feeling a lot better and am keeping the weight off. I sometimes think maintaining weight loss is as hard as losing weight.

A sad time for you SarahMac ?.

I heard tonight my sister who lives in Italy is very poorly with COVID. She is 81 and has many health issues. We have had a bumpy relationship through our lives but I feel sadness and compassion for her. I just don’t want her to suffer, she has survived both breast and bowel cancer.

SachaMac Tue 09-Aug-22 21:48:23

Thank you Whiff I hope you are having a better few days. You are so right, you can’t help but relive the whole thing, you remember every little detail so well & you can’t help but lie awake thinking about all that happened. Thankfully I got through the first anniversary with a little help from my lovely family & friends. One of the friends I went to the spa with is now just hitting the 2nd anniversary of her DH’s death and says the second year has been almost as hard. I think it’s probably because people step back with their support a little, assuming you are learning to cope with things when in reality it’s far from the truth.
One good thing about the spa was most of the people there were a similar age to me and my friends & all shapes & sizes, I’m 62, Of course there were a few honed & toned youngsters there but I’d say they were in the minority. I’d highly recommend it.
Ive just got back from a couple of days in Brighton with my daughter and two grandsons so the diet has gone out of the window a little, it was lovely to just get on the beach and enjoy the sunshine and fish and chips of course!!
Keep going Cornergran at least you are staying stable and not piling on the pounds. It’s back to SW in the morning for me, time to face the music & get back on the plan. Not expecting great results this week but onwards & downwards as they say.
Have a great week all you pears ?

cornergran Mon 08-Aug-22 06:34:20

Hello everyone. I’ve been missing as what I had to report seemed so ‘samey’. A pound down, a couple up, a couple down and repeat. In essence I’m where I was when I joined you.

It’s very odd, doesn’t seem to matter how much or little I have eaten in a week the same pattern is there. Initially portion control worked well for me, doesn’t seem to now. Friends stayed last week, it was noticeable I ate (and wanted to eat) so much less than them.

Oh well, I’ll keep at it. You never know one day the 2 lbs down may stay that way and continue to head in that direction. smile.

Hope your body will behave itself whiff, you’ve had a lot to manage. Our grandchildren have always known I can’t walk quickly or run and have to sit down a lot. They have all been so adaptable and accepting, enjoy your time with your grandson, he’ll love being with you.

Whiff Mon 08-Aug-22 05:57:02

SachaMac hope you get through the first anniversary. I found I relived the last 2 weeks of my husband's life. It was like watching a film unfortunately that happened for 14 years. One the day I ended up a sodden wreck. As I say on the bereavement forum I call the first 10 years early days after the death of your partner. As that has been my experience. My children always just text to check how I was ,always said fine . They had their own grief to content with. But the 14th year my daughter phoned me as we do we try to be brave but it all came out what it did to me. She told her brother and both said I should have told them. But as parents all we do is protect our children and said they had enough with their own grief and I was protecting them they asked who from and said me. My daughter understood but my son didn't. I promised myself to never let it effect me like that again and haven't . But it's been 18 years for me.

Get through the day in your own way don't fight the tears, scream, shout, swear hit a pillow anything that makes you feel better took me years to realise it's normal. I can't say it will get easier as the years go by but you learn to cope better. But like everything in life I have wobbles. But don't fight them. But this is just my experience. ?.

Well done with the weight lose. What a treat going to a spa. I have never been as I always imagined it was full of toned beautiful people and fed in lettuce leaves ?. But I assume it's just normal folk nowadays.

My husband would laugh his socks off me liking exercise as he was the fit healthy sporty one. Our instructor had been to a class and said it was very good and seeing another later in the week. So hopefully this week she will have news for us. Depending on where they are don't know if we will stay together but making new friends doesn't bother me but I hope we can stay together as I love being with them.

Shirley well done staying the same. Glad you had your other eye done. I know it made a world of difference when my mom had hers done.

Dorset well done with the lose. What is CRT and FT ? You are keeping busy and out of mischief by the sounds of it. I found exercise addictive and always feel better after doing it.

Four I have stayed the same this week which is fine. How are the exercises going hope they are helping? Did you measure yourself. As I said muscle weights more than fat and found after a few months exercise I put on but lost inches.

Sarah well done maintaining.

Need to stick to my allowance as next week off to Digby for 4 days. And know there will be high cal food on offer.

Didn't post yesterday as usual my body decided it didn't want to work probably. My balance has been off all week. In fact I ended up in a privet hedge on my way to the bus stop on Wednesday. Luckily the hedge was very thick and I stayed up right. When walking I have to concentrate on making my feet face forward an in a straight line. If I don't picture a 64 year old toddler with a stick and that's me. Thursday found myself heading for a metal barrier which was a suprise as I thought I was going straight but that's my HPX for you ( Hereditary Hyperekplexia) .

Hopefully my body behaviours today as I have my youngest grandson this afternoon while my daughter has physio on her shoulder. But my grandson's are used to nannies body not working properly. As they have grown up with it same as my children.

In fact I think it does children good to realise everyone is different . And people have physical problems and some mental. Luckily mine just effects my body. But at least thanks to my brilliant neurologist I don't have jerking limbs or seizures anymore but still all my usual problems. But I have more confidence since being on the tablets as I don't have to worry about hitting people of things when out or ending up in A&E. Always find a positive out of a negative even if it's something silly.

Anyway pears and fruits have a good week . ?

Sarahmob Sun 07-Aug-22 15:48:25

I’m still maintaining, I have to be careful and haven’t slipped back into old bad habits but I’m loving life at my current weight. I feel fit and full of energy. Keep going everyone, it’s worth it when you get where you want to be ?

fourormore Sun 07-Aug-22 10:54:22

I am definitely plateauing at the moment - a loss one week inevitably means a gain the next so on went 1.8lb this week.

I am considering taking a few weeks off - totally ignoring the scales - as that has worked for me in the past. It's annoying because I have been really good this week except for yesterday when family came for buffet (also known as pastry everywhere!) type lunch.

Will see how it goes because I won't give up!!! It's so hard when you only have about a stone to lose - always the last bit is the hardest!

God luck everyone - gain, remain or lose we will not give in!!!

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 07-Aug-22 09:44:09

Good morning everyone! Nankate I hope you have recovered. Shirleyw are hope you are well too- I think you are very brave.
I hope they have found a new exercise class Whiff, your current one sounds so much fun and so beneficial.
I'm still doing my 10 minutes of Jo Wicks daily. It's very gentle but I certainly feel less creaky! As i may have said I'm now a vocational coach and amongst other things cover wellbeing. Until i got my laptop all i could really do was follow the course i would be teaching which includes wellbeing exercises. I allocated time to things i thought important daily, exercise, mindfulness, hobbies, reading and a task-a household job you keep putting off ! ( weekly). A few months in I am impressed. I havent missed one, even the exercise. In fact it's as routine as cleaning my teeth! We also cover CRT which is a form of problem solving. I was quite horrified at first as it's an area I have struggled with in the past on a course. For anyone who is not familiar with it it's the sort of problem where you have to get foxes and chickens across a river in 2 journeys without foxes eating chickens etc. I've never considered myself a logical person. My particular horror was The Towers of Hanoi. It got to the stage where previously i wouldnt even look at it?. With great trepidation I met it head on and am now on level 8 of 9 ! The approach to the exercises is more about thinking about thinking rather than the result you achieve. CRT has been proven to improve cognitive skills ,it certainly seems to work.
Of course wellbeing exercises are not a magic bullet,in fact when you most need to do them is probably when its hardest to do so. Last year working FT in a very pressurised job I was like a zombie. I'm still FT but hybrid and pressure pretty much disappeared. This does however give me insight into how it may feel for participants and I can empathise with their struggles.!
So I feel odd if I dont exercise daily, and I'm gradually doing the hidden chores that are so annoying but behind a closed door! Yesterday I tackled the airing cupboard! This week will be my wardrobes!
Finally I have managed to lose 1/2 lb. I was quite surprised as on Friday I had one of those " hungry" days where would probably chew on table legs!
Have a good week every one. Sounds like it's going to be another hot one!

Shirleyw Thu 04-Aug-22 02:51:22

Stayed the same, which I’m pleased about, haven’t really tried much this past week, had my right cataract done on Monday , I consider myself very lucky, both done now within 6 months of each other….
Enjoy the lovely weather we are having, have a good week….

SachaMac Wed 03-Aug-22 20:18:06

Hi all, pleased to hear everyone is doing ok. NanKate it sounds like the liquid diet worked in more ways than one, not a nice way to lose it though. I hope you are feeling much better now
I’ve lost 2lb this week and I’m very pleased with that as I have been to Hoar Cross Hall spa for a couple of days with two friends. It was very relaxing and took my mind off things a little, its the first anniversary of my DH’s death this week so an emotional time for us all. I was a little worried I might have gained a 1lb or so as I had a couple of glasses of wine and also some lovely desserts but the portions weren’t large & most of the food was very healthy so I somehow got away with that, I had been spot on with the plan prior to the spa trip.

My lovely little Border Terrier loves swimming Cocopops I just wish I could swim as well as him. I hope that you can find a suitable exercise class Whiff it’s typical when you have found something you really enjoy for the council to close it down. My husband who was the sporty one too, I’ve always found exercise more of a chore but I am trying to keep active. Lots of dog walking & I’m trying to do some pilates each morning too. Wishing you all a great week smile

Whiff Tue 02-Aug-22 10:29:11

NanKate doesn't matter how you lost it it's still a brilliant lose. Sorry your diverticulitis is back. My friend has it and by process of elimination found what food or liquid things set it off. But she also found that it just happens. Is yours like that? She has to drink a lot of just water a day with the odd tea but no coffee and very little alcohol perhaps a small drink once a month. Also she found exercise helps.

I will be making biscuits later to take to my exercise class tomorrow as it will be the last on with our instructor. The next 3 weeks will be with a different one. Hopefully she has found a class we can join as at the end of August they finish. Due to the council cutting funding. If not I will have to start hunting for one even if it's a sit fit one. I don't want to stop going to class . My husband would laugh his socks off me liking exercise. As he was the sporty one.

NanKate Mon 01-Aug-22 15:10:51

Well girls I can confirm I have lost 2 and half pounds! Now before congratulations I must tell you I have had a a recurring bout of diverticulitis. I immediately (at my consultant’s advice) gone on to an all fluid diet, yuk ! But is worked and all the pains have gone and my appetite is down. Good news in one way but I need to keep myself on reduced rations, not easy.

Whiff Mon 01-Aug-22 07:00:28

Cocopops glad you had such a good holiday. Brownies always need testing especially warm with ice-cream yum.

CocoPops Sun 31-Jul-22 21:01:18

Oops I meant weight is 135lbs.

CocoPops Sun 31-Jul-22 16:53:40

Good posts Whiff. Well, I had a great time at the cabin with my GC with ocean swimming and forest walks. My little dog loves swimming and swam along with me which was sheer joy to see. My GD made brownies which needed testing and my GS made a G'n'T for me every day which I could not refuse! Weight up to 150lbs this morning.
Very hot here now with temperatures in the 30's for the week ahead so healthy salads are the order of the day and lots of water for drinks. Have a great week Pears.

Whiff Sun 31-Jul-22 16:24:22

Four thank you. As you exercise you are building up muscle and muscle weights more than fat. The more you exercise the more fat you burn but your muscles get heavier. That's why it's important to take your measurements. I didn't believe it but I put on a 3 weeks running before I joined GN but had lost inches . Then as my body got used to my new shape I started to lose again.

fourormore Sun 31-Jul-22 10:26:06

What an interesting post Whiff - well done on your loss. I have slipped a couple of times when the biscuit box has been brought out but have exercised well so lost 0.4lb. I'm happy with that and determined to ignore the biscuits if they turn up this week!
Good luck everyone as we all plod on together!!!

Whiff Sun 31-Jul-22 10:11:15

SachaMac hope SW works for you 1lb is a good loss. We forget how much it takes to lose a pound. Think its something like eating 3,500 less a week. 2lb off every week is not obtainable.

Everyone is different and we all process everything we eat and drink differently. As our body shapes are different our bodily needs are as well. Especially if you have health problems. The main thing to to get into the mind set it's a marathon not a sprint. If you have a bad day or week then let it go and start again. Took me decades to realise that. How I wish I could have told my teenage self comfort eating didn't solve the problem of being bullied. It just gave them more ammunition.

kissngate pound off is very good. Men do find it easier to lose weight that women. I think it's because they store the weight in different places and it's easier to loose it off say your top half than hips and thighs. Only my theory. Also it's usually the women dishing up and controling the portion sizes.

Dorset half a pound off is good it's a loss so think of it as a win. I am happy if I lose quarter of a pound. Have you checked your measurements lately you may have lost inches.

Shirley it's a blip the main thing is did you have a good time away. Eating less for life isn't just a physical thing but a mental thing. Well that's my theory. I had to think of food differently and after a life time of eating with gay abandon had to thing about what to eat and making sure it was a balanced meal. I remember someone saying once your need to eat a rainbow of fruit and veg a day. So I try and do that.

Well much to my surprise lost pound and quarter this week. Did go over allowance a couple of days but as I don't have anything high in calories it was having extra low fat yogurt and fruit.

Does anyone watch Curvy Brides boutique ? It's my Saturday afternoon viewing. All the women are like how I was. Even those that have lost lot of weight . I still see me at size 32 and have to remind myself not to reach for bigger clothes. Size 16 bottom half and really a 14 on top but feel better in a 16. I never tried on a wedding dress even though I was about 14st when I got married. This was in 1981 when the dresses where huge puffy ones. I found a picture in a magazine and mom's dressmaker made it for me. It was a nice A line dress with lace over top that came to just above elbow height so covered my fat top arms cream satin with lace over dress. The material cost £30 and £10 to have it made. I gave it to a charity shop when I moved.

I love the way owners Jo and Al are with the brides . And they have the most beautiful dresses . They make everyone feel like they deserve to have the dress of their dreams. I would have gone there if it had been around in my day.

Well everyone have a good week .

Dorsetcupcake61 Fri 29-Jul-22 07:44:27

Good morning lovely pears?. Your cabin sounds bliss Cocopops! I hope SW weigh in goes well SachaMac?. Well done for changing to a method that you feel positive about.
I have lost half a pound which is a positive downward move. Over a month I am losing a pound a week which is what NHS suggested. Well they said that the calories should lead to 1-2lb a week,oh how I would like it to be 2lb.
I know it's 52lb year but....!
I totally sympathise with those that have stuck to plan and not lost a pound.
I do think our system slows down as our hormones change. That said I was thinking wistfully of when I first tried WW in my late thirties and did lose good couple of stone. In retrospect it felt as long as stuck to plan with treat on weigh day I would lose that 2lb every week. I will own up that I've just realistically remembered that time. The girls were young and I didn't drive. The buses at that time didn't have easy pushchair access and so I walked everywhere, miles per week! I will admit I am out of condition and would really struggle to do that now,in fact I couldn't! Still it's put things in perspective for me. I think there is a lot involved in weight loss, including genetics. It's certainly now often an arduous process. Like many of you I had a couple of days of treats and was horrified to put on the 4lb I had worked so hard to lose. Whether that was just a strange peak or due to water retention I don't know-but miraculously I lost it in a week!
I think over the last few years I am actually learning the real meaning of eating for life thanks to here?. Calorie counting has helped with my portion size and I avoid processed foods where possible. No temptation is kept in the house! We all have occasions such as holidays/ events but now I try to balance out as best I can!
Good luck everyone. It's tough, but we can get there!

Shirleyw Fri 29-Jul-22 05:01:39

Morning all…..1 lb is good but I know what you mean, can be deflating when you expect more but that’s a couple packs of butter lost which is just dandy.
I put on a couple and that’s after going away for a long weekend, no more holidays till September now so I must crack the whip, also I really must stick to workouts and strength training. Now it’s a nice temperature their is no excuse for me ??‍♀️?
Have a good week guys
