3 years 7 months ago on 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our new mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

So Onward and Downward Pears ??

Good maintenance and losses are proof that we are getting there!!! Even the gains seem to be explained - if we know why we have put on a bit we can deal with it.

Everyone is doing so well - I report a 0.2lb loss - OK it's ounces but I've not been out all week and although I have kept active there have been a lot of 'sittting down' jobs. The decorator has been doing the staircase and as he works on his own I don't like to go out while he is working at height. I'd hate to come home and find him crumpled up at the bottom of the stairs!
He says he's fine but no one intends to fall off a ladder!

Keep up the good work everyone - Sinday for me today and it's blowing a hooley outside!

Morning all you lovely ladies, a quick in and out to report I’ve maintained this week, but I’m going to adjust that target for another half a stone down so still looking to lose a wee bit more. I have been really hungry this week so am looking at how I can up my food quantities without adding too many calories. Trying a big bowl of green salad before eating my main meal. Will let you know what effect that has. I’ll catch up with all your news later as I’ve got to go out right now.

Whiff Sun 20-Feb-22 09:43:25

Shirley well done staying the same. It shows you can maintain a weight that's what I tell myself when I stay the same.

cornernan well done losing the pound. Finding a way to lose weight that's suits you takes time. And still have treats as without treats there would be nothing to aim for.

If losing weight was easy no one would be over weight. We would all be the same size. What a boring world that would be. The main thing is just to keep going it's harder to kept going if you stay the same or put on . But I know with all you fruits it's kept me going.

Lost quarter of pound this week. 4 weeks in a row I have lost weight. Just hope Mr Powers continues to stay. I have put a photo of me at size 32 and over 19st on the fridge only high cal food in it is my homemade jam and marmalade. But only let myself have some in my porridge of a Sunday morning and make it with skimmed milk instead of coconut.

Hope none of you have suffered any storm damage . Strong winds still here with heavy rain forecast for the next couple of days. But don't need to go out until Wednesday for my exercise class.

Showed my daughter and grandson's yesterday I can get on my right knee on one cushion now. My left knee is to painful to kneel on. Hopefully by Wednesday I can get on my knee without the cushion. Practice and confidence and grim determination will get me there. I am very stubborn.

Have a good week everyone.

cornergran Sun 20-Feb-22 07:42:37

Just caught up with everyone. So many positives here and real tenacity. It’s much harder to lose weight than many people assume. Time to be proud of our efforts I think.

Much to my surprise another 1lb down even with a meal out. More eating out this week as it’s family birthday time. Portion sizes definitely much reduced which seems to be the key for me. Greek yoghurt with a few berries for pudding most days. Really enjoy it. Todays treat will be a fruit crumble, well it is Sunday smile.

Trying to avoid sugary snacks. I find if I have one I want more so easier to avoid totally most days. Water with a dash of lemon juice quells the need for ‘something’ when I’m using the computer. It used to be biscuits or a chocolate bar.

Still experimenting really. Helpful to hear everyone’s experiences. Thank you all.

Morning….stayed the same.

Hope your not all wind swept,….

Flaxseed Wed 16-Feb-22 17:16:06

sachamac - well done on your food choice. I wouldn’t have been able to resist the cocktails and wine either hmmgrin

Flaxseed Wed 16-Feb-22 17:14:09

I might try 1200 for a couple of days a week and see how I go. Maybe the days I move less which would make sense.

I will need to stick to 1400 on work days otherwise I will keel over grin

Whiff Wed 16-Feb-22 17:06:02

Sacha I buy shops own . Cadbury's is to sweet and options has a funny after taste.

Biscuits went down well. Managed to get on my right knee and got back up again with a little help. Tried to get on my left knee but just to painful. Have permanent pain in my left arm and leg. But pleased on managed to get on my right . Will practice at home and hopefully next week get right down.

SachaMac Wed 16-Feb-22 12:21:31

My Nutracheck is set at 1200, it’s hard some days but doable. I went up to Leeds yesterday to meet friends, I chose a healthy lunch of Chicken skewers with roast veg but we had wine & a cocktails which pushed me well over my allowance. I have made roast red pepper & butternut squash soup for lunch in my soup maker so looking forward to that. I think when you have a day off Track you need to try & get straight back on it the next day or the whole week can be lost. The low cal instant hot chocolate drinks are good idea Whiff and at only 40 cals a nice sweet treat. I will pick some up later, I used to like the fudge one but not had any for ages.

Whiff Wed 16-Feb-22 09:20:41

Flaxseed I have 1200 cals a day but do allow myself to go up to 1250 if I want and extra low cal instant hot chocolate which is 40 cals. I found when I started this journey 1500 was far to many for my life style and didn't lose much. But found 1200 suits me. But of course do lapse and go up to 1500 if having a bad day. But if I go more than 3 days at that amount I put weight on.

Because of what I eat means I work out my cals for the from morning so I know how many I have left for the rest of the day. This morning my breakfast porridge ,lunch homemade soup and dinner chicken stew followed by yogurt and stewed fruit add up to 643. So have 557 to play with. It's what works for me. But I live alone. Won't work for everyone.

Flaxseed Wed 16-Feb-22 08:29:40

Sorry I can’t remember who posted further up about probiotics.
I listened to an interesting podcast the other day regarding gut health where there are studies in progress that show how they may help significantly in overweight people.
I have recently started taking a Kefir (peach and turmeric) ‘shot’ (available in most supermarkets) daily. I suffer with indigestion, bloating etc (gastroscopy showed no evidence of disease) which is the reason I first decided to try them although only when I remembered ?
I am now taking them regularly and hoping they help with weight loss!
I am going to research a bit more though as you need so many billion bacilli to be effective, so I want to make sure I have the right amount.
Maybe this is the answer to our prayers! grin

Flaxseed Wed 16-Feb-22 08:02:53

whiff I hope you enjoyed the biscuits! How many calories do you have per day please?
My Fitbit indicates that I used around 1500 (a lazy day) - 2100 calories per day depending on steps/exercise. I have set my Nutracheck to 1400 per day. I struggle on less, especially on a long shift.

I was back on track yesterday but my
mindset seems to have changed and I need to get back into the right headspace.
I have my daughters baby shower at the end of the month and my ex partners daughter will be there. I had really hoped that any photos she might take with me in would show me at least a stone lighter grin
It doesn’t really bother me what he may think but it was a good incentive!!! There’s no chance of that now.
The next incentive is a trip away with DP for my birthday in March.
Here goes……..confused

NanKate Tue 15-Feb-22 20:00:24

Such wise words Whiff.

‘It's easy to give up but each day is a new start . And that's what all here do.’

?

Doodledog Tue 15-Feb-22 19:03:22

Thanks, Whiff, I have ordered some scales with a large digital display that can be set to stones and pounds, as well as KG. They should make it easier to read the awful truth, even in the bathroom without my glasses on.

Whiff Tue 15-Feb-22 15:02:47

Cocopops, cornernan and Flaxseed we all stray we are human and it's better to give in than fight against and go really overboard. Been there and done that. The main thing is not to give up. It's easy to give up but each day is a new start . And that's what all here do.

I have made some biscuits to take to my exercise class tomorrow. So I had to test 2 ?. But did extra exercises to make up for it. And included them in my calorie count.

?

Flaxseed Tue 15-Feb-22 10:40:00

Another ‘strayer’ here sad.
I was doing so well but this last week has seen me unable to resist.
I didn’t weight in Saturday (I use the gym scales as they are calibrated regularly) as I couldn’t stand the disappointment of putting what few lbs I did lose, back on again!
I just find social occasions difficult to negotiate and there are a fair few social occasions coming up.
I need to find willpower again!

cornergran Tue 15-Feb-22 09:07:36

Same here cocopops, or the straying anyway. Stress was my undoing this week. Would you believe I have three celebration meals in the next week, no hope I fear. I’ll be sensible in between and keep my fingers crossed. I’m in awe of those of you with significant weight loss, inspirations all. Just had a look at my digital scales, sorry can’t help much as I can’t see a make, I recall they came from Argos and have served me well.

CocoPops Tue 15-Feb-22 06:51:52

Hi everyone, I strayed from the straight and narrow so the weight is the same as last week. grinI have resolved to behave myself and am on 1200 Calories a day as from yesterday.
Have a great week everyone. smile

Whiff Tue 15-Feb-22 06:31:58

Allsorts that's a good lose since January. Yogurt always tastes better on muesli than milk . Think because it's thicker and makes it slower to eat. I have found things that you eat slowly seem to fill me up more. Hence having soup every lunch time even in the hottest summer.

Sarah the odd treat gives you a boost. But have you noticed the so called healthy options are higher in calories than an ordinary biscuit or small chocolate bar.

Madgran well done. Gives you a boost when you see a loss. I have found losing weight slowly and not giving up even if I put on means we are still winning the fight.

Doodledog my scales are digital by Salter just ordinary scales without a glass top. I didn't like the idea of glass top scales. I didn't want ones that showed fat ratio etc. Got mind from Argos about 4 years ago. Loved my old scales they where also Salter but they had a voice so always made sure I was alone when I weight myself. Had the for over 15 years before they broke. I always weight myself in the nude and stand up straight and count to 10 before I look and they are clear to read without my glasses . It's become a habit to do it that way. I know Amazon sell them as well. I always like things delivered as limited to what I can carry. Hence my back pack can carry more on my back than in my left had. Have to use my stick in my right.

Have a good week everyone.

Doodledog Mon 14-Feb-22 20:39:38

Hi all

Can anyone recommend a good set of scales, please? Mine are accurate, but difficult to read, as they aren't digital, so you have to read the weight from a needle that moves around a circle at the top. There is not a big gap between the pounds, so I can't tell how much I am gaining or losing unless it is in big chunks.

I don't think I want the type that measures BMI and water/fat ratios and so on - I have enough with my phone and watch nagging me without that ?. I'd like a fairly basic (but accurate) set that will tell me the grim reality in numbers that I can see without my glasses.

If I can order them on Amazon or similar, so much the better.

Madgran77 Mon 14-Feb-22 14:36:15

Yay, lost 1lb this week. Well done to everyone for hanging in there! Slowly slowy gets us there ...as demonstrated by your long haul, never give up steady weight loss Whiff.

SachaMac Mon 14-Feb-22 13:44:38

You have done well Allsorts Ive had a good couple of days currently counting calories. I sometimes think if you lose the lb’s more slowly they tend to stay off. A steady loss can lead to great results over 6 months.
Whiff I agree you need to have the odd treat, If I deprive myself too much I just end up bingeing. I do try and weigh everything, I couldn’t manage without my scales…. Onwards & downwards smile

Allsorts Mon 14-Feb-22 07:19:02

Welcome SachaMac I hope like me you benefit from like minded people, often I go off track but come back on.
Everyone seems to have lost something, whatever it is it’s better than putting it on.
Just had my weigh in, my sin day is Sunday, I have lost half a stone since starting in January, despite set backs, now loss will be slower, aiming 2/3 lbs a month, looking at it long term as don’t want it to creep on like I have so many times. Need to lose another 10 to 14 pounds. I eat Lidl Greek yoghurt on top of muesli and desserts when I have one.

Whiff Sun 13-Feb-22 13:35:32

Sarah well done with the 2lb off and being 1lb under target. Hopefully that will be me one day.

Four well done with the 1lb. Enjoy your sinday.

SachaMac glad you found the thread. NanKate renamed dieting Eating less for life. Which is a better way to think of it. When my grandson's come and the eldest wants Yog fruit as he calls it. They both eat my Easiyo low fat Greek style yogurt and my stewed pureed fruit. As it doesn't hurt them to have it as at home they have everything full fat. And they like nannies.

I don't have my non stop foods in. But when I go out I do have a treat if I want one. Always have a biscuit after my exercise class.

I can only lose weight by weighing and measuring everything and counting calories. But after all this time it's second nature to do it. Actually after a month I got used to doing it. I can't tell by looking at food how much it weighs.

We all have our own way of losing weight. It's a marathon not a sprint. Remember to measure yourself as some weeks you might not lose weight but inches. Especially if you up your exercise. Look forward to reading your posts.

SachaMac Sun 13-Feb-22 11:31:22

Hi I have just found this thread and would love to join you all. I need to lose at least two stone, three would be better!! I have been a serial dieter most of my life even when I didn’t need to diet I would be on some plan or other which I think has probably ruined my metabolism.
I’m now 60 and over the last few years have plonked weight on. I find it a real struggle to lose weight. I have been alternating between using the Nutracheck app and a Keto diet. Ive also done SW with success in the past. If I stick to the Keto I have great success which tells me too many carbs are perhaps a problem for me, sticking to it isn’t always easy though, especially when I am out for coffees, lunches etc. My mum was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes at my age and I want to avoid that if at all possible by getting some weight off and upping my exercise.
I have an Easy Yo yoghurt maker too, I only ever do the plain Greek, it’s delicious, I don’t buy any other yoghurt now unless it’s for the grandchildren.
Anyway today is a new day so I will get started.
