Face or Figure?

If losing more weight was going to increase the number of wrinkles on your face and 'age' you further which way would you go? Asking for a friend. Thank you.

Not so much figure, more for health then I’d rather be lighter
Just lost two and a half stone, I’m feeling much fitter and told look much younger, definitely feeling better at size 14 then size 18 at 5ft 4 which still isn’t small by any means, but I’m happy haven’t noticed anything extra wrinkly, perhaps my arms ? but will try to stick when at a 12
And our dr is also very pleased with myself and partner, we did it together ( mainly for his pre operation) which was successful
Hope this helps your friend

I have a couple of medical conditions which affect my weight and am around a size 14-16. I still have most of my natural hair colour and a round face and people tell me l look younger than my age. Certainly, I don't have wrinkles. On the other hand, I have known two ladies who were, if anything, underweight and they both looked a lot older than they really were. One had a face covered in deep wrinkles. The other, in spite of being terrified of putting on weight, almost treating it as if it were a crime, has had a number of serious health issues. I think it is a matter of compromise, to be honest. If you are extremely overweight, as Whiff was - and congratulations on your tremendous achievemen, Whiff, then of course you must lose weight. However, if you are heavier than you would like to be (me) but not too much so, it is not as much of a problem.

Keep your lovely face xx

Face first! If you have a nice happy smiley face, no-one will look any further!

Not overweight but also not too thin. My SIL has had to diet due to diabetes. She has now stopped as she looked so much older. Iwas shocked when I saw her last as she has always looked so attractive but dieting hadn’t done her any favours.

Sorry but maybe saving her own life is the best favour she
has done. Being overweight leads to health problems due
to mostly too many sugary carbs, its not complicated.

Put your face first, it's what people look at.
You can compromise as I have. I need to lose a stone, the same stone I've been chasing around the cake shop for years. I've been my target weight and felt wonderful and I've been heavier but it's really finding a spot in the middle where you're prepared to be. You can still enjoy your life and your face will thank you. Set a target that's achievable. Be kind to yourself.

BigBertha1, I would recommend eating low carb over Slimming World. You don’t feel hungry on it and it’s easier to sustain. Some people have very good results with it, like this lady:

I’d be most bothered about being a healthy weight, personally.

Bit of an odd question....I'd put health and happiness over both

Would depend on why I was losing weight. If only for vanity, well wrinkles may need to be accepted. If for health reasons, may live a longer better life with wrinkles but the better health would compensate.

Just an observation! I HATE the word ‘diet’. In this day and age, surely ‘eating healthily’ is more appropriate and would still be a path to reaching a healthy weight? ‘Diet’ implies self denial, doing without your favourite foods/drinks and a kind of self imposed, short term kind of suffering! Whereas healthy eating, to me anyway, is a total reset of the way I think about food and eat and is forever. It does include treats and indulgences, of course but as part of a varied approach. I have not ‘dieted’ for over thirty years now and my attempts at eating healthily have meant I have never been overweight.

I managed to loose 15 kg over the last 5 years. But now I am maintaining this weight, even though not perfect, I am happy as I am.
If anyone asks, I’ll say I’m the same shape as my grandmothers, and they lived to be 93 and 89 respectively…

I have thought about this hard, yes I am a bit vain and I am a bit fat so i need to resolve the two things. I have signed up for ore SW from November to lose a bit before Xmas and a January holiday. More to do afterwards to get ready for GD2s wedding in the summer. Thank you for your comments and thoughts. xx

How about a compromise? Lose a bit of weight, it's good for us, but not too much so that we then look wrinkled or haggard.

This…🤓

BigBertha1 Wed 18-Oct-23 13:37:49

Thank you for your reponses. Lots of food for thought. smile
I think I'll go with Henetha's plan I think I can only honestly stay on a diet for a short length of time so hopefully err the side of compromise.

henetha Wed 18-Oct-23 10:45:54

Not easy, is it PinkCosmos. I'm endlessly trying to achieve this compromise! grin

LauraNorderr Wed 18-Oct-23 10:30:29

Healthy weight and wrinkly face v unhealthy weight and flawless face.
No brainer.

PinkCosmos Wed 18-Oct-23 10:29:42

I agree Henetha. If I lost two stones I would look and feel much better, would lose most of my double chin and not end up to wrinkly in the face.

Just need to crack and do it now grin

I think it depends on where you carry your weight.

A friend of mine is very pear shaped but has a lovely face with no double chin at all. She is perceived as being slimmer than she is because she does not have a fat face.

Another friend is quite slim but has a double chin and fatter face. She is perceived as being bigger than she is because of her double chin.

I think if you have a double chin and lose weight you can look OK and not too scrawny.

If you don't have a fat face to go with your bigger body, then you can end up looking drawn and more wrinkly if you lose weight. It's like a balloon after it has been blown up and is then deflated.

I have been to slimming clubs on and off over the years and I seen this as other members have lost weight. It seems to be worse in older women as their skin does not have the ability to bounce back.

Unfortunately, I have a fat face and a fat body hmm

I just try to keep an even weight, which is around 11.5 stone,I dont weigh myself.

I became obsessed with lowering my target slimming world, until I got to a very unhealthy 7st 10,I looked awful, all I could focus on was that I could wear size 6 clothes, having been a petite size 16,my skin hung off of me,people asked if I had been ill,a
long term relationship broke down that didnt help,I became scared to eat,and as my life spiralled out of control, the only thing I could control was my weight.

I now eat small portions of everything, but days happen that I will try to eat as little as I can,or I will skip meals,I dont eat bread, cereal, and pasta/rice and very little potato.

People say I look healthier,I am neither fat nor thin, just average,I think I am probably just right now,
my grandaughter hated me being that thin she felt I would snap when she hugged me.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 18-Oct-23 09:58:20

Definitely weight before face.

Being overweight causes excess pressure in heart, lungs, joints, more chance of diabetes etc.

Tenko Wed 18-Oct-23 09:32:55

I’d go for losing weight as being overweight affects your health and well-being as it’s harder to exercise with the extra pounds . My dh list 2st last year and felt so much better . He could walk the dog without getting out of breath and his knees didn’t hurt . Yes he lost weight from his face but didn’t look scrawny . However my friends dh has lost weight recently and looks very drawn and older than he is . So there are a lot of other factors .

Whiff Isn't it strange how larger people think wearing black wil, yes, make them look slimmer, but often, I think, make them invisible, when all it actually does is draw attention to their size. They are usually the one person dressed in black in the room, and just as people suffering from anorexia will try to hide under layers of loose bulky clothing, it actally draws attention to their size or lack of it rather than the alternative.

Dress like everybody else and people will be aware that you are big, but then you just blend into the landscape with everyone else.
