Going to try weights

Went swimming this morning and bumped into old schoolfriend. Same age as me but looks 20 years younger!
OK she dyes her hair and has a big fringe and high pony tail but she looks fantastic for 70.

Probably left it too late but am going to try weights. She said she used to use them a lot and her arms look really good. She has a lovely slim figure but not skinny as she has a good bust.

I came home feeling about 90!!
Anybody had good results from weights?

I’m 70 in a couple of months. I’d put on about a stone over the past couple of years and was hating it. So I decided that it was now or never.
I’ve enrolled for a 12 week transformation course ( which I’m doing in 10 weeks as I’m going on holiday for the last 2 weeks) which includes two personal training sessions a week, a monitored diet and any extra classes I would like to do. The training sessions include machines, bar weights and kettlebells and a great deal of encouragement. I’ve lost 3 kilos in the first 4 weeks, my body shape is changing for the better and am well on my way to my goal. Each week my trainer pushes me a bit more and I’m finding that I can do weights that I could do 20 years ago.
At the end of the course I’m encouraged to stay on the maintenance program.
It’s never too late to do this.

That is so encouraging, thanks.
I hate carrying extra weight too. I gained 3 stones in weight when I quit smoking 20 years ago. My GP told me not to worry about it as it’s still much better not to smoke.

Will be v interested to hear your progress. 👍

I have lost 1.5 to 2 stones of it several times since then but cannot keep it off. I have signed up to Aqua Aerobics and plan to do more walking too. As bikergran says better eating habits will also be involved.

At sit fit class we use weight round our ankles to strengthen our legs . The others can use 1kg weights but I can't due to disability. So brought myself 500g ones and fine with them. We sit back in the chair and lift our left leg 12 times same with the right. Then lift our left leg and hold for a count of 5 12 times after a minute do another set . Then do the right.

We use resistant bands . And do sit down exercises, standing behind the chair and walking exercises. Have been doing classes since 2018 but the class I am in for 18 months .

If you think sit fit is a soft option sit in the middle of the chair and match using arms and legs for 10 mins . And see how you still get a good workout. Our oldest member is 93 she is more agile than me. I am 66.

What a good idea Whiff. I will see if there is anything like that around here. Thanks

Oh since 2017 I started to finally tackle my weight I was over 19st. Size 32. Lost 7st over 5 years down to a size 16. Still trying to lose the last stone. No amount of exercise will make the baggy skin tighten but I can live with that . The secret is to look on it as a marathon not a sprint. If I only lost quarter pound a week I was happy.
It takes eating 3,500 cals a week less than your body needs to lose 1lb.

Yes I use weights at the gym. Weights and resistance bands are good for improving bone density.

Whiff I have led these classes and vouch for you. They are not for the faint hearted and any exercise is better than none. So hold your head high and carry on.

I use kettlebell and dumbbells at home now, although I have a slight shoulder injury so not been able to do anything for a couple of weeks
The injury was to do with Work, not the weights…

And I also do 2 ten minute sessions a day on a vibration plate, if you don’t know about them, Google it …🤓

dogsmother the first exercise class I went to in was a Age UK community fit club. The instructor gave me a chair to hold on to for leg exercises and sat down for arm ones. My children laughed when I said I was going but found I loved it. When the course finished I still them at home . When I moved here 5 years ago found a sit fit class but it closed due to covid but found a GP referral group run by my council . It was free and we had tea and biscuits afterwards. The instructors where great but as they where in their 20-30s and treated us like delicate flowers so we told them we can do more so we had a good work . One of the instructors told me about the class I go to now . Funny enough it's held in the church round the corner from my home Monday afternoon .I told friends about the class she runs at the library on the morning and they went . Her husband has Parkinson's and he loves it and the Parkinson nurse is amazed at the improvement in his fitness.

What I love about the class is we encourage eachother and no matter how much pain or how our mobility is effected we turn up every week as we all feel better and have a sense of achievement. Plus we laugh a lot .

Bet you always said the same to your class you should feel the exercise but if it hurts stop.

The sit to stand exercise got me off the loo at the hospital there was a queue for the disabled one. And didn't realise I wouldn't be able to get up easily. Practical use for the exercise. I have an ease toilet at home looks like a normal loo but taller. But I use a toddler seat as I had a series of UTI's and kidney infections 16 courses of antibiotics.
A nurse said to always sit with your knees and hips in line that way you empty your bladder and bowel completely. Haven't had an infection since.

Shinamae when you said vibration plate afraid my dirty mind when back to what people said about sitting on a tumble dryer. Those of a certain age will understand the reference.🤣 Along with pampas grass in your front garden 😁

Yes Whiff, just that, fun and eventually all participants do tend to enjoy and encourage one another. The results speak for themselves both physically and mentally.
