On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples. I am so grateful to those who have stayed loyal and contributed a lot of useful information and given support, especially Whiff 👍

Do join us, the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.

Pass on any useful diet tips.

You have nothing to lose on this thread, other than weight.

Our mantra is - EAT LESS FOR LIFE.

Allsorts this losing weight lark is hard and we sometimes fall off the wagon, however us Pears and Apples always get back up, dust ourselves down and start again.

My advice don’t keep high calories foods in the house that you know you can’t resist.

After trying to go it alone and failing miserably, I have joined Slimming World. At the moment I am doing it my own way, eating three meals a day and counting calories. I enrolled two weeks ago and I've lost 8lbs 🙂. The main thing for me is feeling accountable to the leader and fellow slimmers, I felt so chuffed when I saw my weight loss written down in my record book.

I want to lose 3 stone and feel optimistic about achieving this as I don't feel like I'm dieting. I'm eating tasty and filling food on a smaller dinner plate than before and not eating in between meals, I drink a glass of water or tea with skimmed milk if I get peckish and the feeling passes.

We just have to do what works for us 🙂.

NanKate, I weighed in yesterday and I had lost 6 pounds, then in the afternoon I ate a whole box of very rich chocolate truffles. Then finished of a packet of all butter shortbread. All that after 8 days of measuring everything. Back on track today.
Whiff I can taste baking powder in anything so I now use it to clean the sink. I love a nice scone but I have to have it with clotted cream and jam. Nothing remotely sweet is coming in my house until I am the weight I want to be as I am weak.,Looking side ways at myself in the mirror today I looked about 5 months pregnant.

truffles.

Well done for the weight loss Whiff

I admire how you get out and about. You are my type of person 👍

Roll on the Spring and the lighter nights. Clocks change at the end of this month yippee.

Hope you all had a good week and didn't get blown away with the high winds .
Lost 1. 25lbs this week so happy about that . There was a fundraiser at the church round the corner for a charity one of the little girls parents who was killed it a town I go to via train think it's about 40 mins via car . I brought a cherry scone to take home it was tasty but I know why it was so light they used baking powder which I could taste . That's why I never use baking powder in my scones . Mine always taste could be not as light as this one . Baking powder gives a weird taste . It's ok in strong flavoured things . I don't know if most people would taste it but I can.

Won 5 cuddly toys one teddy bear about 3 ' tall so asked one of the stalls holders to put in behind the stall where the children's toys are. Will take the rest tomorrow. Won some other things at another stall that my grandsons had yesterday when they came .

The vicar and her husband who is also a vicar at another church and live in the house that came with his church . Plus 2 others had their hair shaved off. Brought few other things . Lot of people I know from class and Womble friends . My youngest friend who's nearly 16 was dressed as a bee. Can't believe at nearly 68 I have a friend that young . The charity is named after the little girl who's name is similar to bee. Had a cuppa with 2 of my Womble friends. Who had be Wombling on their way to the church and finished on the way home .

Seeing my neurologist this week hopefully get help with my arms and answers to all my questions about last year . I already know what some of the answers may be and if I am correct I will be complaining via PALs about the stroke neurologist.

Meeting up with my 2 friends for lunch on Friday. New place for me to visit . We take it in turns choosing somewhere to go.

Have a good week pears 🤸

Whiff Wed 11-Mar-26 07:37:26

Allsorts you are like the rest of us here we don't give up or take short cuts we put the hard work in . My brother brought me 2 boxes of Turkish delight which I love for Christmas as part of my presents. But devoured one box in a day so put the other one in the food bank box at the church I attend my exercise classes.

If it's not in my home I can't eat it . Stuck to my cals all week as happy with last week's weight lose only to put on quarter of a pound this week. How I don't know but it's only 4ozs doesn't sound that bad in ounces .

Never understood how I can lose weight if I over eat but put on when I don't. But never mind I just keep plugging away or should that be plodding 🤣.

Hope you enjoy your walks . Hopefully when I see my neurologist next week he will up my tablets and stop my arms from moving . Having to wear wrists strapping everyday but still manage to sprain my wrists especially the left one .

Have a good week pears 🤸

Allsorts well done you have made the first step on your healthy eating plan. We all fall off the wagon, as I did recently, but us Pears and Apples keep going.

We are all here to support your Ups and Downs, as you are for us.

Well after months of not dieting, I am now considered obese
I have put on a stone over the winter. Due to very stressful situation at home and bad back and joint problems, i git very depressed and felt so isolated, couldn't exercise.Nothing now fits me. I have done my weekly shop, bought everything healthy, cleared shelves and freezer of anything i shouldn't have. Do hope I don’t have any chocolates bought me.

as I really don't want them but I get tempted. New scales, weight recorded, I mean business, Going to start two short walks each day as still gave planctar fascilitus but have brilliant trainers and it should be doable.
I will look on here every week for everyone's journey and tips that might help.
I have always worked with men and they knew from the start no discrimination and didn't get any. I left WI over their stance
on Trans rights after being in it donkeys years.

.

NanKate Wed 04-Mar-26 07:55:31

3.25 lbs brilliant Whiff.

I’m glad we both support Women’s Rights. 👍

I am going to own up to being very naughty this week. At my Tai Chi class we had a break for tea and cake/biscuits and there were some choc marshmallow tea cakes and I ate 2 plus another biscuit 😳 I’ve regretted it since but it was worth it at the time. Back on the Wagon.

Whiff Tue 03-Mar-26 14:29:10

NanKate you would definitely be a suffragette and I would be marching by your side . I stand up for the rights of woman as well. Women need to feel safe in woman only areas.

My main campaign is making all toilets disabled and older people friendly. Lot of the time it only means a handle on the wall at an angle. To help raise and lower yourself . Plus sanitary bins not put but the side of the toilet . Large locks on the doors so they are easy to lock and unlock.
Some cafes have only one loo but it can be made disabled accessible easily. Especially they always have a nappy changing area . My daughter has used her changing mat and changed the boys on the floor if the nappy changing mat isn't suitable.

Don't know how I did it especially as I went to vegan restaurant on Friday and their food is delicious. I am veggie now but my friends are meat eaters but they loved what they had.

Lost 3.25 lbs how no idea . But this is what I had yesterday at cuppa and chat plus toast and jam tarts . 😋

NanKate Sun 22-Feb-26 16:16:49

Well done Whiff for standing up for Disabled Rights. 👍
I stand up for Women’s Rights even though WI HQ put trans rights before those of biological women’s rights. If I was brave enough I would have been a suffragette 🙍‍♀️

Whiff Sun 22-Feb-26 12:43:07

Hope you have all got the sunshine today. Well not had a good week food wise so 2lb on . But back to it.
Had a full week even when to a beetle drive ,quiz and pancakes at local church some of my Womble friends where going . I didn't Google beetle drive as I wanted it to be a surprise. A young friend of mine showed me what to do . Boy was it frantic but great fun ,quiz got the old brain box working good job the 8 of us worked together. Home made scotch pancakes and brought filled chocolate pancakes but all hot lots of topping but had my as they came .

Had my craft group Wednesday all my cake went but had my pieces night before as I make one gluten free but to be honest they don't taste any different. I always make sure one takes cake home for her daughter's who are gluten free being big headed they say my cake is better than any brought one .

Friday went to see the Fishermen's friends had looked forward to it for a year. Had the lovely Joe take me to my seat he checked on me during the interval and fetched me at the end and took me outside to wait for my taxi. He offered to stay with me but said I would be fine. Concert was brilliant and the concert run over as they sang more songs.

Unfortunately an incident happened. Since I moved here never had any disabled discrimination. Until Friday all over my stick and a jobs work usher. But I stood my ground had to hold onto the box behind me so I could face him . Long story. I told Joe he asked if I wanted him to report it I said thanks but no . So sent an email yesterday. I fight my own battles. The older I get the more I am getting militant fighting for disabled rights . I have no tolerance for bad or ignorant behaviour. Anyway see if I get a reply to my email . I will give them to Wednesday if I have not heard anything I will be ringing them .

But it hasn't marred my love of going to concerts there 4 more to go and one in the Anglian cathedral.

Hope you have a good week fruits 🤗

NanKate Thu 19-Feb-26 20:32:54

I add a squirt of honey in plain kefir or I buy fruit flavoured kefir.

TheSunRisesInTheEast Thu 19-Feb-26 20:28:04

Thanks, NanKate, that's interesting. I've tried Yakult and Actimel, I'll give Kefir a go. I suffer with poor digestion so I'll try anything. I had my gall bladder removed about 20 years ago, I have all the symptoms of IBS so you'd think that would encourage me to watch my diet, but I don't 🙄. I always feel so much better if I have an empty stomach, but that isn't very often 😂. I'll look out for Kefir next time I go shopping 👍.

NanKate Thu 19-Feb-26 08:33:59

Good morning. To answer your questionTheSun I have looked up the answer.

‘Kefir is generally superior for gut health, offering a wider diversity of probiotics (30+ strains) and higher nutritional value (protein, calcium) with less sugar compared to Yakult.’

TheSunRisesInTheEast Wed 18-Feb-26 22:19:16

Me too. I am always in pain with fibromyalgia, spinal stenosis and Morton's Neuroma. I eat when I'm happy, sad, fed up, tired, stressed, in pain, any excuse!! I've had sciatica for the last few days so I'm grouchy. There's no hope really!! 🙄

MayBee70 Wed 18-Feb-26 17:50:01

I used to find looking after my grandchildren exhausting and when I’m tired that’s when I eat too much.

TheSunRisesInTheEast Wed 18-Feb-26 14:59:50

Whiff

Pears I know what the problem is we are all excellent cooks and produced wonderful food that no one can resist😋😋😋 . Well that's my excuse. 😂

Yes, Whiff, you're right! And if they can resist it, we eat their share as well!! 😂🤣

TheSunRisesInTheEast Wed 18-Feb-26 14:56:20

I wish I could do that, MayBee70, but my fridge is full, my freezer is full and so are my cupboards. My husband and 30 yr old son have packed lunches every day and I look after my two granddaughters most days, so I'm surrounded by food. The girls aren't good eaters, and as I hate to waste food I eat their leftovers 😱. I am going to have to up my game, because summer will be here before long and I'll be so angry with myself if I haven't lost some weight.

Sounds good to me. I think we're all struggling, if we didn't enjoy food so much, we wouldn't have a problem. I have a friend who is not at all interested in food, she often forgets to eat. I can't understand that. I'm always thinking about my next meal, and a day out revolves around where we're going to eat.

I’m not all that interested in food. However I’ve maintained my weight for quite a while ( my weight has yo yo’d throughout my life) by thinking about what I really fancy eating the following day. In that way I never have anything that I want to eat niggling away at me. My current cholesterol lowering diet has resulted in me not doing that so I’m going to switch back to it.

TheSunRisesInTheEast Wed 18-Feb-26 10:26:39

Is that like Yakult? I do the same with gherkins 😋, they have such a strong flavour it takes away my wish to eat crisps/biscuits/cake 🙂.

NanKate Wed 18-Feb-26 08:18:23

I always keep kefir in the fridge. If I get a real longing for food I have a small chilled glass of kefir and it seems to fill me up quickly.

I put the remaining soup mix in the slow cooker for a while to see if it softened up but it didn’t. I also twice crunched on something hard and was worried that I’d broken a tooth and it must have been in the soup mix ( which I’d soaked overnight and rinsed numerous times). From now on I’ll just use the pearl barley. Apples are healthier stewed which is why I have them with chia seeds and yoghurt. Also carrots are healthier when cooked. I do like an apple with cheese but rarely eat an apple. I think the last time I ate an apple that tasted nice was over 45 years ago when I was in Italy. I’m fed up of everything I’ve been cooking lately and am going to go back to eating something I really fancy, even if it’s fried egg on toast.
