On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle.

We now have a small band of ā€˜regulars’ called Pears and Apples. I am so grateful to those who have stayed loyal and contributed a lot of useful information and given support, especially Whiff šŸ‘

Do join us, the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.

Pass on any useful diet tips.

You have nothing to lose on this thread, other than weight.

Our mantra is - EAT LESS FOR LIFE.

A round of applause please! I lost 4 pounds this week!!

The diet is working well. I lost more than half an inch of my waist too!

Best thing though- I walked an average 7000 steps a day!

My goal next week is to see I can get into any of my old trousers I haven't worn in over a year. Do you think I can do it?

I'm going to try!

Oh yes maybee. Limits biscuits…they were nice for a snack lol….remember the nimble bread advert, flies like a bird…..that sort of bread was not good….wasnt ayds like square fudge things?

Glad your dog improved cocopops and that your back on track…..onwards and downwards.

Whiff

MayBee don't remember the brown rice diet but remember trying the cabbage soup one it was awful plus the side effects . Then there was the grapefruit and boiled egg diet didn't do that as I don't like eggs as eggs in cake and biscuits yes. Then there was the Atkins which was very heavy on meat . I rather stick to my way . Counting cals that way I can have a treat but count it into my daily allowance. Find the book NanKate recommended very helpful and so easy to use . Think having pictures helps with your mind set. Been taking my own advice and having a drink if I feel I want a snack . 11g of low cal hot chocolate made with boiling water only 40 cals. And satisfies my sweetness craving .

Keepingquiet put me to shame but was home all day so only did just over 900. But still doing my morning exercises and my 300 rotations on my static pedals. Because of my love of routine it's just become something I do everyday .

No craft group today . Brain Charity shut for activities and they are having roof repairs took them a few years to raise the money to do it . At least they will beable to use all the offices upstairs . But plastering and new carpets will be needed as well..Back first week in December. Bone scan today.

Take care all . 🤸

I did the Atkins diet ( or a version of it). I lost a lot of weight but am lucky that I didn’t permanently damage my health. I didn’t drink enough water and my breath smelt of acetone. I think I fainted once. I didn’t do the grapefruit diet. I knew someone who was on the cabbage soup diet and remember a mutual friend turning to me once and saying somewhat cruelly ā€˜looks like the cabbage soup diet isn’t working’. If only we’d been more knowledgeable about health and nutrition back then. It was all eat Slimcea bread or Limmits biscuits ( which were just expensive overpackaged biscuits) and you’ll look like Twiggy! I bought Ayds which were so yummy I just ate the whole box!

Glad your dog is better Cocopops.

Well done you are back on track.

CocoPops Tue 05-Nov-24 15:32:46

Hello everyone. Well, last week I did badly. I was comfort eating when worried about my dog who wasn't well. Thankfully she has recovered and is full of beans again.
On with eating within an 8 hour window now and no snacking after 7pm!
Keep on the bandwagon ladies.

NanKate Tue 05-Nov-24 08:19:40

Keep at it keepingquiet. Once I had got through the first week my new reduced calories have become normal. When I start feeling hungry about 45 minutes before my evening meal I have a drink of watered down low cal ginger beer and that keeps me going.

I’ve already lost 2 inches round my waist and I have only been going 3 weeks plus I think. However I want to lose it from my hips.

Shirleyw Mon 04-Nov-24 20:42:37

Thanks keepingquiet and good luck with your ā€˜new diet’….

keepingquiet Mon 04-Nov-24 11:12:52

That's impressive Shirley. It is the first day of my new 'diet' wish me luck!

Shirleyw Mon 04-Nov-24 03:48:30

On a roll this week, lost 3 lbs. I try 8000 plus steps daily, if I walk to hospital (volunteer there) and back I can get in 12000 that day or if I take dog out twice it’s that rough amount and more even, I walk her in the mornings and dh takes her out in the afternoons, I now go with him more regularly, not just at weekends now and that pushes up the steps…..and it’s hill walk too , not keen on hills LOL. I’m sure it helps my joints.

Got Pilates today and for a change not a lot planned for the rest of the week atm. Perhaps I should clean all the windows and glass , be good toning work out if I put some ā€˜wellie’ into it. Last week calendar was full…weird how the weeks go.

Have a good week all.

keepingquiet Sun 03-Nov-24 17:28:33

It isn't easy forcing myself out there! Most of my 9000 steps today were done in the supermarket. I made a list and then just went for one item at a time, so as it is a huge supermarket I was walking up and down quite a bit.

I also parked a further away from the church car-park so had to walk up the hill to get there!

Then I forced myself outside just as it was getting dark and walked round the neighbourhood.

I bought all the ingredients for my meal plans this week so intend to stick to them as much as I can. Not cheap though- I spent £25 more than my usual shop, but many were dry store items so shouldn't have to buy them too often.

Let's see how I get on this week!

NanKate Sun 03-Nov-24 15:21:52

I only manage about 4 - 5 thousand steps a day, but that is fine with me. I just don’t have the oomph anymore. Having an underactive thyroid doesn’t help.

Whiff Sun 03-Nov-24 11:12:36

NanKate well done losing 5lb so far . Counting cals is the only way I can lose weight. This week my weight up by a quarter of a pound . Which I am fine with each day is a new start.

Silverlining I can put on 4lb in a day but it's due to water retention. You probably haven't really put on 1lb just by eating more but because the extra food is still being processed by your body. It takes eating 3,500 cals per week less than your body needs to lose a 1lb . So if you weigh yourself tomorrow you may have lost that pound .

My darling brother when I bemoaned I had put a pound on said you probably need a big xxxx. He used to love a vindaloo but had to stop eating them I asked why he said his xxxxhole could taken the burn anymore 🤣 . My brother is down to earth.

Keepingquiet hope you reach your goal today . Some weeks I don't do that many steps in a week.

Had my bone scan on Wednesday my daughter took me as it would have taken me 3 buses to get there . Different hospital to the one I usually go to. Saw very quickly . Only took 20 mins but the position I was put in had to have help to get up as my limbs had stiffened.

Went to my usual hospital on Friday bus stops outside the hospital. Was seeing my neurologist's registar but saw my neurologist and had a quick chat with him. He's registar was lovely. And interested about my HPX as he had to look it up. But I had taken a list and how it effects me took me 3 days to write both sides of A4 paper. He videoed me walking and doing some things like touching my nose and his finger. Sounds simple missed his finger most of the time 🤦. He asked me to draw a spiral you have never seen anything like it it's was all over the place and very wobbly, then do it with my left hand started off ok then ended up as zigzags . Going to arrange some physio for my legs especially the left as it doesn't always want to work without my flicking it forward and my foot turns in occasionally which pulls my hip. So rather wait until it gets worse that's why I asked for the help now . Medication staying the same but if I feel it needs upping I only have to ring them .

Have a good week everyone..

keepingquiet Sun 03-Nov-24 09:20:46

Well done NanKate! I think it's best to lose a little at a time- after all for me it had taken years to put on so we can't expect to lose it quickly.

I plan to walk 8000 steps today, better get going!

NanKate Sun 03-Nov-24 07:50:47

I managed one pound loss this week which makes 5 pounds in total. I looked up online what 5 pounds of fat looked like and it spurred me on to keep going on my calorie counting.

silverlining48 Sat 02-Nov-24 13:09:06

Well done keeping quiet. A pound in a week is more than satisfactory, it’s keeping it going that’s so hard.
I was away overnight at a friends house and managed to out on a pound in a day, despite watching what I was eat8ng.

Now I am home I will have more success.

keepingquiet Fri 01-Nov-24 12:57:10

Hi everyone- new month ahead!

I lost one whole pound this week! I can't say I did much different. I totted up the alcohol and I've had five pints of beer in total, spread out. Meals with friends and family were the main thing-then a school re-union in a pub didn't help either.

My waist measurement is the same and I totalled 38 000 steps not counting indoor ones.

That makes an average 5.500 steps per day.

So next week I'm aiming for 6000 a day outdoors and giving the Diabetes UK mediterranean diet a go.

Something has to work, right?

I currently have no social events planned, so no drinking either.

Let's see how it works out and make November a month for losers!

NanKate Thu 31-Oct-24 09:02:19

It is disheartening Allsorts. Before I started my latest weight loss regime I was adamant that I was not a big eater but have come to realise that I often opened the fridge and ate a handful of grapes, then a few nuts, etc etc. Nothing I ate was in big amounts but I clearly ate too many healthy foods. The doctor said I needed to cut back on fruit 😳

Losing weight is not for the faint hearted, but getting steadily bigger and bigger as I was, can only bring health issues.

Onward and downward folks.

Allsorts Thu 31-Oct-24 07:22:58

I think my body is stuck at my current weight, no amount of walking or giving up sugar helps. I don't count calories, just give up sugar and fat.my portions are not huge and i never eat between meals, it’s very disheartening. I have no cellulite and my body is firm, not wobbly but too big. If I ate what I wanted I would put on a stone very quickly. According to charts i am 20lbs overweight now.

NanKate Thu 31-Oct-24 07:16:38

It’s taken me years to get back onto counting calories and it is working. Although it was tedious at first I now know what the calorie count is of most of my chosen foods, so it is no big deal. I wish I had started this system again sooner.

I have decided not to tell my friends what I am doing, YOU and my DH, are the only ones in the know.

I have a lovely purple (my favourite colour) biker jacket which I want to be able to wear again and this is one of my incentives to keep on track.

It’s my weighing day tomorrow and I will report back whatever the result.

Keep going Pears/Apples you have nothing to lose but weight.

silverlining48 Wed 30-Oct-24 11:33:01

Thanks Shirley, I will see what I can do.

silverlining48 Wed 30-Oct-24 11:31:16

I remember the cabbage diet but never did it myself.
I am up a pound today despite being in the verge of losing yesterday so was extra careful.
These things are sent to try us.
Have a good day all.

Thinking of doing a meditarrean style diet- anyone tried this and have any tips? I already eat a lot of 'med' stuff- mainly garlic bread and pizza, lol!

Had my porridge with fruit for breakfast today. Feeling better than I did last week. Did nearly 8000 steps yesterday too!

Shirleyw Tue 29-Oct-24 20:34:55

silverlining my app is on my smart phone so I download it from google plays store, not heard about hacking but I don’t pay for it , it just maps my walks….it blocks off the beginning part and the end so not to identify where you live…..

silverlining48 Tue 29-Oct-24 18:43:57

Think we all recognise can’t stop eating days MayBee.
Tomorrow will be a better one.
