Slimming World doesn't work for me

Hello There
I need to find a new very simple diet as am in the obese BMI category, prediabetic and have raised cholesterol. I am in my late 60s. Also I remember the late 1960s!
I have been following slimming world food optimising for a year now but only lost 17 lbs in 52 weeks.
I love the support and the meetings but their eating system does not work for me. I am following food optimising 100% but now often gaining pounds instead of losing them.
I am thinking of continuing going to their meetings for the support and companionship but following a different system for eating. SW just encourages me to eat unlimited amounts of certain foods, but without a reasonable amount of fat the food doesn't satiate me and leaves me with constant cravings ( remember K D Laing?) and low fat diets make me feel depressed. I would rather follow a diet where I eat normal healthy food but in small portions.
I have a slow metabolism and an addiction to healthy tasty foods. Plus I like to have a sandwich when on the go and although I eat meat and fish I only want to eat small amounts of these to prevent suffering to others and help prevent climate change. I need to curb my appetite and stop leaning on food to make me feel better in general.
Any advice for an ultra simple cheap diet of every day foods? Or any other suggestions. Has anyone tried hypnosis? Any good free or cheap apps that are simple to use?
Thanks so much in advance for replying and sharing your experiences.

Eat less. Have the same meals as usual, but smaller portions.

It’s so simple when you have money. Weight loss drugs cost over £100 a month.

Not if they’re prescribed HobbyCat

You will have numerous suggestions on here I’m sure as everyone is different but six years ago I saw mention of Bright Line Eating on here. At that time I was pretty desperate after a lifetime of yo yo dieting including numerous times with slimming world. I could lose a bit but never keep it off. I saw the book on an Amazon written by a neuroscientist read it and it changed my perceptions entirely . Six years later I am still keeping eight stone off which is a thing I never thought I would do. There is also a website called Bright Line Eating which might be of interest. I wish you all the best whatever you go for.

I've yet to find anyone who has actually been prescribed them - anyone I know who takes them buys them privately.

I'd been the same weight for about 4 years and was in the overweight BMI category. Had routine bloods done and GP told me my cholesterol was high. She gave me 3 months to try and get it down. I researched what would help and reducing saturated fats was a recurring theme. I checked everything I bought (time consuming but worth it), changed to oat milk, porridge instead of cereal, low sugar squash and so on. I lost a stone and a quarter in 10 weeks and have kept it off. Now in healthy BMI range. GP told me not to lose any more but would have been happy continuing had it been necessary.

When I asked my Doctor about weight loss medication, on prescription, she said the bar was set so high no patients in the practice had ever qualified.
The required BMI was set to a ridiculously high level !!

Has the OP changed her original post? Im sure she sad about eating cake every day but it was a,lright because it was made with Benecol. I even posted a rely that contained that but now I cant see it in the original post.

Someone tell me I didnt imagine that😱 That would be very scarey.

Farmor15 Thu 20-Aug-26 16:36:58

Lathyrus - the second post on thread, by Maybee mentioned cake with Benecol.

Lathyrus3 Thu 20-Aug-26 17:14:49

Ah. Well thats bad enough but not quite the descent in senility I feared😬

Thanks🤣🤣

I’m 3st 5.5 lbs lighter thanks to slimming world.
Look up some of the group leaders on facebook who share recipes as well . As you gradually lose weight you will find you don’t want to eat as much . A pound off is better than a pound gained.
Try using the range of seasonings from jd seasonings . The Facebook girls usually have a money off code . It’s taken me 14 months to lose my weight.. still need to shift some more weight but gradually it will go . If you have a smart phone download the app . Simple swaps help you.
Wish you lots of luck

I am a fan of the old red and green SW days.
I find all the Optimising changes a bit difficult to follow. I would find the old red / green books if you can and follow them. Best diet I have found.
Perhaps combine it with 5:2?
Also, explore fasting (eg Dr Unwin, UK GP and Dr Jason Fung Canadian diabetes doctor.) Fasting can seem to mimic the fat jabs? Best wishes,

No it was me that said I ate cake everyday in a reply to the OP. Because, apart from the sugar content, which I reduce, I make it with all the things I was supposed to eat to lower my cholesterol ( which has worked as my cholesterol had reduced since the first blood test and the nurse said she was happy for me to not take statins although I could if I wanted to). The diet to reduce my cholesterol had a knock on effect of losing quite a lot of weight without really trying ( the OP had said her cholesterol was high which is why I mentioned it). I hope that un scares you!

MayBee70 Thu 20-Aug-26 18:05:54

…sorry just noticed that Farmor had pointed that out!

Lathyrus3 Thu 20-Aug-26 18:07:20

It was the thought that Id imagined the whole thing that was scarey😱

Bad enough that I got the posters mxed up 😳

MayBee70 Thu 20-Aug-26 18:08:15

I still think taking plant sterols with my meals is stopping my body from absorbing fat even thought Google says it doesn’t. But it might be the fibre in chia seeds that’s doing it. Either way I’m going to continue with both…

Lathyrus3 Thu 20-Aug-26 18:10:26

Oh yes. Im glad it works for you.

I don't know anything about them.

I just count the calories. Nice and simple and I know where I am..

Lathyrus3 Thu 20-Aug-26 18:11:23

Except obviously my brain is going the same way as my body😬🙁

greyfur16 Thu 20-Aug-26 18:16:35

Ask SW to give you data on the number of members who have successfully lost weight and maintained.

No Chance.

greyfur16 Thu 20-Aug-26 18:17:18

Maybee a stone is fantastic

Lathyrus3 Thu 20-Aug-26 18:17:29

I got the eating cake and other stuff muddled up with the OP saying it wasn't working for her.

teabagwoman Thu 20-Aug-26 18:39:27

MayBee, can you signpost me to your cake recipe please. I’m working on my cholesterol and crave cake. I’m hoping your high fibre, nutrient dense version will satisfy my craving and help me stay on track.

Lots of rubbish about SW on this post! Your portions are too big ... You can't snack between meals! You do what you like. Speak to your consultant. If your metabolism is sluggish. Do some exercises: spin class, Pilates whatever.

If your metabolism is slow I would ask for a thyroid function test from your gp . That might explain a lot as well

FranP Thu 20-Aug-26 20:02:56

I lost a stone on SW and felt a lot better anyway, but it is a slow process (which my doc agrees with). Unlimited does not mean big portions though so I did better with measuring.

I keep getting ads - it is not your fault, it is your thyroid, your GLP1, your fatty liver, your pre-diabetes etc etc, and your doc is wrong.

Doc says just remove anything pre-processed.

Got a diet from the hospital to reduce my tum, pre-op. Lost 9lbs in 2 weeks, but tum still as big as ever, and exhausting, but it has not gone back on. Mainly just lots of veg, small amount of meat and fruit, little milk, shredded wheat for breakfast.

DH has lost 3 stone on prescribed mounjaro, but a lot of muscle too. He has far more energy now he is not carrying that excess around.

A hypnotist Paul McKenna recommends eating very slowly, as your body does not signal you are full for 20 minutes

RillaofIngleside Thu 20-Aug-26 23:24:27

The Fast 800 diet by Michael Mosley was excellent for me, and reduced my blood sugar too. There's an online website with meal plans and nutrition advice.
I've also known 3 people who have lost 5 + stone s with mounjaro injections.
After losing 3 stones I have maintained my weight by thinking about what my very slim mother and grandmother ate.
One slice of bread, tomatoes, lettuce, one slice of ham, a small home made cake, half a tin of soup and beans; basically half of the portions most people eat. I use small.plates, cut everything in half and leave part of every meal.
Has really helped.
