On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle.

We now have a small band of ā€˜regulars’ called Pears and Apples. I am so grateful to those who have stayed loyal and contributed a lot of useful information and given support, especially Whiff šŸ‘

Do join us, the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.

Pass on any useful diet tips.

You have nothing to lose on this thread, other than weight.

Our mantra is - EAT LESS FOR LIFE.

Sounds good to me. I have been wanting a diet buddy for ages because I don't want to go to a class or even have a rigid diet.

I'm trying to cut out the carbs just now but finding it a struggle- what do people eat instead?

I haven't been weighed for ages but know I haven't lost any because my clothes are getting tighter. I'm now a size 18 after being a size 16 for years. Once upon a time I was a size 10! My wedding dress was a size 8!

My weight is also all around my tummy, which means I have to wear baggy legged trousers!

I want to lose the weight round the middle as I know its the worst kind for maintaining good health.

Any tips/ideas will be welcome.

Welcome keepingquiet.

This book should help you and has definitely helped me. Of course there may be other good diet books which will have helped others too. It cost me £15.99.

I’ve got clothes from my early twenties and the waist size is unbelievable! I’m lucky in that I’m a hips and thighs person, the downside being that I had huge thighs even when I was a size eight but still kept dieting to get rid of them. The rest of me was skeleton like. I think it ruined my metabolism forever especially as I had a huge weight gain in my late teens which I lost very quickly on the doctors quick weight loss diet which was popular at the time.

silverlining48 Tue 22-Oct-24 16:51:48

I am all hips and thighs, so a pear ; short too which means a lot of clothes are too long and often not wide enough on the haunches.

I lost 1.5 stones with SW and kept it all off for 11 years which It is an achievement, but this year it’s now creeping back and I am now only half a stone away from my original pre SW weight. Really do not want to go back there.

We always cook from scratch, eat sensibly, don’t snack or buy ready made food or get take aways. I walk for miles , hardly eat pastry or cake…. šŸŽ‚ even though I really want to, so not sure what I can do to shift this unwelcome blubber.

NanKate Tue 22-Oct-24 17:50:11

I was like you Silverlining eating what I thought was a low calorie diet, however when the Doctor said to me recently I would benefit from losing a stone, I started counting the calories and realised I had put on weight as I was eating more calories than I thought, with lots of fruit !

It’s a slog at first counting calories but with the help of the book I have shown on here, I am slowly reducing my weight.

CocoPops Tue 22-Oct-24 19:28:44

Please may I rejoin? I need the wonderful support from Apples and Pears to shift a few pounds before Christmas

NanKate Tue 22-Oct-24 20:33:48

Of course CocoPops once a member always a member. I’m counting calories again and it’s working. What regime worked for you before?

CocoPops Tue 22-Oct-24 20:58:51

Thanks NanKate. The last time I shifted some weight it was with intermittent fasting/ 16:8. One meal at 11 and another at 7 plus a light snack inbetween if hungry.

Whiff Tue 22-Oct-24 21:54:33

NanKate that 1,000 went by quickly. CocoPops glad to see you back. MayBee , silverlining and keepingquiet glad to see you all.

My steps will be up as off to my craft group in the city. But had so much fun last week and one of my gel printing friends is coming tomorrow. After going last week after meeting another gel printing friend I told her all about it . Can't wait to see what we make this week. Have made gingerbread to take with me. Plus some chutney for the chef . Last week I was talking to him and asked if he would like some. But did warn it's my way ..But it's tasty.
Hopefully more people will join the good fight . 🤸

I have had just two meals today, a late breakfast of home made oats seeds and nuts with fresh fruit and kefir yoghurt.
Dinner was around 5pm, roast chicken and veg. I sometimes do this to cut back on food but when I was at SW I was often told I might not be eating enough, and therefore not losing weight.

I have been to many slimming clubs over the years it’s been a struggle and am so cross that after maintaining my weight loss for over 10 years it has suddenly crept up and havnt been able to shift it.

silverlining48 Tue 22-Oct-24 22:49:55

Thanks nankate and whiff.
Coco, my two meals today seems like the 16:8 diet you mention.

Shirleyw Wed 23-Oct-24 03:28:13

Hi cocopops, how are you?

I have that book nankate, it’s my bible, such an easy guide to follow, also got their low calorie soup and low cal meals book.
Calorie counting is the way to go for me too….upped the exercise and walking as well helps.
I eat 3 meals a day, for breakfast either 45gms muesli with a banana or fat free Greek yog with fruit.
Reading that whiff has various soups for lunch planted the seed for me. I’m into my soups now for lunch (thanks whiff). Yesterday I made Tom kerridges Thai style butternut squash soup, today it’s delias fresh tomato soup….i freeze them too.

Shirleyw Wed 23-Oct-24 03:29:02

….hi silverlining

Shirleyw Wed 23-Oct-24 03:30:52

….oops and hi * keeping quiet*.

keepingquiet Wed 23-Oct-24 08:24:48

Hi everyone.

I'm having my daily porridge with raspberries, blueberries and banana.

It is my usual breakfast except the fruit varies- is it too much?

I did no exercise yesterday except some housework. Today I won't be doing much either, as I'm going to stay with a friend for her birthday so forget counting the calories!

I have done calorie counting with some effect, and also the fasting thing which I couldn't cope with as it gave me insomnia. I now sleep very well just about every night and don't want to lose that.

One of my issues is chronic tiredness. I really don't have much energy and struggle to do a lot of things. I also nap a lot in the daytime. Remedies anyone? I refuse to accept this is a normal part of ageing,

In any case I have to get ready to go and see my friend- no dieting for a day or so!

MayBee70 Wed 23-Oct-24 15:19:44

I drink decaffeinated tea and coffee but have started having a strong proper coffee when I get up ( which is quite late as I’m pretty nocturnal) which seems to jump start my brain and gives me a bit of energy. I think I suffer from motivational tiredness. I made a tea bread and banana bread last night so I’ve got my breakfast/lunch sorted for a while. Just need to have a clear out of my freezer to make room for it. I’m making a point of planning meals that I really look forward to because I find myself using up whatever food I have to save money ( I’m still using up my pandemic stockpile!) eg I’m really fancying a spaghetti carbonara and a steak and kidney pie so I’m going to meal plan around that. I’m freezing bread so that I’m not tempted to have a toast binge late at night. And I’m really enjoying my cup of hot water when I wake up. It all started when I had indigestion but I’m actually liking having hot water sometimes instead of tea or coffee. I haven’t weighed myself for a while having lost quite a bit of weight when I was away from home and I don’t want to feel demoralised if I find the pounds have crept up. I just need to start doing Whiffs exercises on a regular basis.

silverlining48 Wed 23-Oct-24 15:27:19

I think a cup of hot water in the morning is a good idea. I sometimes put a slice lemon šŸ‹ in it to make it a bit tastier and always freeze bread about 4 slices a time, it stops us eating too much in one go.
I weigh every morning, it helps me focus. I have lost another pound today so maybe my two meal day yesterday helped.
I have never been able to deal with calorie counting though, I just can’t do all that weighing.
Enjoy the banana cake MayBee, but not all at once smile

Great that so many of us are back, especially with Christmas on the horizon.

It was our 54th Wedding Anniversary today and so I allowed myself a delicious meal in Cote, then the waitress brought us both a glass of champagne, it would have been rude to not to drink it 🤪. I drank half a glass and should add I had had a raspberry mojito before that. I will be on minimal calories for our tea, promise.

Shirleyw Wed 23-Oct-24 20:36:31

Oh how lovely nankate,, happy anniversary, 54 years is something to celebrate. We had our 40th this year.

NanKate Wed 23-Oct-24 21:46:21

Yes I start my day with a cup of water from the kettle. I don't eat for the first hour and try to do mindless jobs like washing up and a bit of tidying until my brain is awake- then I have a cup of tea.
I don't drink coffee for a while after I'm up as I read it interferes with cortisol levels.
