I think it's a necessary skill. My dgs1 has been learning how to write and handwriting too. I would hate to see it disappear

I just can't imagine a world without handwriting words on a piece of paper. Just little things like sticking a post it note on a malfunctioning equipment in the office, a reminder on the fridge, signing for a delivery... I would also assume it helps kids learn fine motor skills and other skills.

Basic arithmetic is still taught some 50 years after calculators became widespread, so I would really hope that the teaching of handwriting will continue too.

It is probably my age that makes me think this way, but I simply don't think that we will ever be able to rely on technology being available/ able to replace these skills 100% of the time.

Are we talking about writing or handwriting? Writing is hugely important in expressing your thoughts and ideas, reflecting, editing, revising and sharing. In my opinion, handwriting is mostly a waste of time and discriminates against children with a range of learning difficulties. I hand write shopping lists and letters of condolences. Otherwise I type or dictate before editing.

Hand written words can be kept secret, diaries and so on, thoughts a person wants to keep to themselves .
They can also be completely destroyed if necessarry, or can last forever.

I have just been watching a post on Facebook by Alice Sharp Training in which she and her colleague Marie discuss this topic. I have worked with Alice, and she is an inspirational lady.
The jist of the post is that writing maybe shouldn’t maybe be a big part of the curriculum, as it may not be used greatly by children in the future. She quotes Sweden, who removed handwriting from the curriculum around five or six years ago, and replaced it with other things, but apparently have decided to reintroduce it. If you have Facebook, have a look.
I think it would be a shame if it were to disappear, as, to me, messages etc in loved ones’ handwriting are very important.
