Anyone Delays their Kids for Kindergarten?

Hi! I have 2 boys, 3 years apart. My oldest was born in May and my second in August. I've heard and read a couple of studies saying it's better to delay kindergarten a year for summer-born boys. Has anyone done this, and do you think it was a good decision or not?

Thank you so much!

When DS was little everyone I knew sent their children to nursery at the age of 2 but I couldn’t see the point. He went on play dates and I did loads of educational stuff with him. He finally went at 3 and a half because the nursery was attached to the Primary School. Both my DC were born in the summer term and I was born at the end of that term and none of us had any problems at school, at all.

Depends on the child.
I’ve taught boys who were 4 in August who were really ready for it and boys born in September who could do with at least another year out of school.

Now I’d also ask what they are doing at home.

Surely there is no set age for pre-school/nursery/kindergarten, at least here in the UK?
Most little ones are there already though so that both parents can pursue their career.

I sent my Spring born daughter to Nursery school aged 2 and half.
I delayed sending her to school full time until the term after her 5 th birthday.
A good Nursery can be very beneficial but not so much full time school, for under 5s.

If I remember rightly, the nursery which was attached to the infants school where mine went, took the children on a basis of starting the term that followed their 3rd birthday, although if that was a late summer birthday, they started after Christmas and not in the September. Prior to that mine did a couple of mornings a week in a kindergarten from aged about 2 and 3/4. My younger one met his best early years friend there bonding over Thomas the Tank. His mother and I were delighted to know that they were going into the same school nursery and school thereafter. I think it depends on the child as to when they start. Some children have separation issues at the outset, mine did initially, which they got over. Having said that I had two friends with August born boys who felt they went into the system too early. Mothers are the best judge as to when their child is ready, go with your instincts.

I speak as a nursery teacher and the choice is up to you. The time you spend with your children closes the gap between you and makes everlasting connection. However the social side is beneficial in the year before starting school. It helps them adjust to their new adventure and time table. But if you feel you do reading and creative at home set yourself a timetable and enjoy the time you have together.

If you are talking of kindergarten I assume that you aren't in the UK?

My grand children are Canadian and they went to kindergarten, and they don't start actual school until gone 6, so if you are delaying your child would be 7?

If UK you can delay starting reception until the following year. You would need to discuss with the school.

Parents returning to work after the birth of a child quite happily put their babies into 'nurseries' at a very early age. Why the angst about at what age to enter them into a school nursery?
